Players who have yet to hop on the Animal Crossing: New Horizons train should absolutely do so. This addicting brand new release in the ever-popular Nintendo franchise puts the player on a classic deserted island with only one plan ahead: to build, survive and thrive as they grow their community.

Of course, being alone on an island would be a fairly boring concept, which is why the player will be joined with a whole cast of animal-like villagers. These mysterious beings with sped-up, high-pitched voices are a core feature of the game, not only for social purposes but also for trading and tasks. Here's what every player should know about them.

10 All The Species

Every villager belongs to a certain species of animal. Within the game, there are about 35 different animal types which will spawn villagers on the island at some point. There's quite a nice variety of animals, and no two villagers look exactly alike.

Some of the species included are wolves, penguins, ostriches, koalas, hamsters, hippos, bulls, ducks and even anteaters. While villagers of the same species have the same shape, their pattern and color scheme, as well as face, will always be different from one another for the sake of uniqueness.

9 Almost 400 Villagers

The cool thing about Animal Crossing: New Horizons is that two players will most likely not have the same kind of island experience. This is ensured with the high amount of villagers that the game randomly picks from when choosing the next people to move to the island.

The official Animal Crossing Twitter account has stated that at its release, the game had 383 unique villagers with their own looks and personality types, as well as differing species. With this, everyone will have their very own island with their very own look. Moreover, more villagers are no doubt on the way as time goes by.

8 Building Relationships

So, what purpose do the villagers actually have? They're not actually there to just make the island look inhabited. Villagers are a key feature when it comes to gameplay in Animal Crossing, as they can be interacted with for gifts or small quests, which can yield rewards in the form of DIY recipes or items.

In order to get the most out of villagers, players should make it a point to interact with each of them every day. This will increase their relationship to the player. It's particularly smart to talk to villagers when they're at their DIY table because they're more likely to share DIY recipes when doing so.

7 Personality Types

Each villager not only looks different but also has a very different kind of personality. This is often evident in their reactions, as well as their speech and attitude towards the player when engaged in conversation. They'll also define their interests based on their personality type.

The game chooses between these following personality types: Normal, Peppy, Jock, Lazy, Big Sister, Cranky and Smug. If a villager's personality doesn't fit a player's island, they can choose to get rid of them, which is covered further down on the list.

6 Special Villagers

When talking about villagers, it's important to distinguish between different types. Most villagers will be regular inhabitants of the island, with their own unique houses. They'll spend their days performing basic tasks outside or indoors, and they can be chatted with.

Special villagers are the kind of beings who offer different types of services. Some of them will be permanently stationed on the island, like Tom Nook, Blathers, and eventually Mable and Sable. Some, however, only come around occasionally to sell special wares, like Saharah, Flick and C. J. Others, like Gulliver and Wisp, have recurring tasks the player must complete.

5 Rare Animals

While there are about 35 different animal species in the game, some of these species are rarer than others, and a player can even make it a point to try and collect as many rare species villagers on their island, even if this is quite difficult.

Species like cats will tend to have a lot of different villagers, with 23 unique cat characters available. Meanwhile, a species like cows will only feature a measly amount of four villagers, making it among the rarest villager type in the entire game.

4 Getting Rid Of Villagers

If a villager doesn't fit the island for whatever reason, whether they're just creepy-looking or they have a personality that doesn't please the player, they can actually be kicked out. In order to do this efficiently, the player needs to use the campsite building for to invite visitors and then persuade them to stay. If they want to stay, this new villager can then take a current villager's spot on the island.

If the player has no campsite yet, they can simply choose to ignore the villager by never talking to them. This might prompt them to feel neglected and simply leave the island.

3 Maximum Number Of Villagers

Although it would be cool to have as many villagers as possible on an island, there's unfortunately a maximum amount of inhabitants that are allowed on a single player's island. Capped at 10 villagers per island, it's important to know for certain that these are the villagers the player really likes.

As mentioned above, if a villager doesn't please the player for whatever reason, they can get rid of them pretty easily through the campsite building.

2 Getting More Villagers

At the beginning of an island stay, many players will probably wonder how they can get even more villagers on their paradise island. This process is at first pretty steady as Tom Nook helps the player with figuring out the basic infrastructure for their island.

After the construction of Nook's Cranny has been completed, Tom Nook will task the player with preparing three houses for three incoming villagers. Once these houses and their items have been prepared, the villagers will move in one by one, one per day.

1 Starting Villagers

Every island starts with the same rules. There's the player, joined by Tom Nook, as well as Tommy and Timmy. They'll also be joined by two starting villagers, which will always have the exact same personality types: Jock and Big Sister.

Although this is consistent with every starting island, these starting villagers can eventually be kicked out once the campsite is built or if the player simply neglects them hard enough to make them want to leave.
