Games based on real-world mythology are nothing new. With the stories of heroes triumphing over gods, the appearance of spine-chilling ancient beasts, and a variety of other-worldly locations, mythology in games is a trend that is sure to never cease, with fans being treated to a variety of great titles over the years.

We've added some new entries of games inspired by the denizens of Mount Olympus, both in antiquity and modern day. 15 Stray Gods

An urban fantasy twist on Greek Mythology, Stray Gods is a narrative adventure game similar to the games in Telltale Games’ oeuvre, like The Walking Dead or Tales of the Borderland. However, this game takes the narrative in a more musical direction, with choices leading to full-blown songs as emotions come to a head.

The game stars Grace, a newly awakened Muse who inherited the position from the Muse, Calliope, who was murdered. Grace must clear her name and navigate the divine intrigue woven between Greek Gods like Apollo, Aphrodite, Hermes, and Persephone.

14 Legendary Hoplite

Legendary Hoplite puts you in the greaves of Dio, a Trojan soldier who has to defend the gates of Ithaca from legendary monsters like the Cyclops, enemy tribes, and undead monstrosities from the Underworld seeking to destroy his home.

In addition to his own martial skill, Dio commands the Trojan army to help his defense of his homeland from enemies. He also has the help of Gaia in the form of increasingly powerful magical equipment to thwart a threat seemingly sent from the Hades’ realm.

13 SMITE

SMITE features many gods and other powerful beings from the pantheons and mythologies across the world, so you know the Greek Gods have come down from Mount Olympus to join the fray.

Greek gods and monsters command a good chunk of the roster, including well-known names like Ares, Hades, and Zeus. There are also lesser known gods like Thanatos, Nemesis, and Hecate, as well as monsters like Scylla, Charybdis, and Medusa.

There are multiple game modes in SMITE, but the most popular is the 5v5, 3-lanes and jungle format Conquest, similar to predecessor games League of Legends and Dota.

12 Theseus

Theseus is an immersive VR experience that places you straight into the story of the Minotaur. The Minotaur, a mythical creature with the head and tail of a bull and the body of a man, was born from King Minos of Crete's wife, Pasiphae, after she fell in love with a bull, a curse from Poseidon as revenge on the King Minos of Crete. The Minotaur was then placed into an elaborate labyrinth constructed at King Minos' request by Daedalus and his son Icarus.

This Greek mythology game almost perfectly recreates the legend, with you playing as Theseus, the Athenian Hero who traverses the maze and slays the Minotaur. It mixes exploration of the maze with survival, combat, and some cinematic story elements before your eventual run-in with the large foe.

11 NyxQuest: Kindred Spirits

NyxQuest sees you playing as Nyx, the embodiment of night within Ancient Greece. Nyx befriends Icarus when he flies into her realm within the sky, but when he disappears without warning, she then heads to the surface to search for him in the crumbling ancient Greek landscape.

The mesmerizing setting and game design seem to jump straight out of the artwork of Grecian amphora and temple friezes from the time in this Greek mythology game. Nyx is aided on her journey by the Olympians as she traverses crumbling ruins and defeats ancient monsters like the Hydra with special powers such as manipulating objects, controlling the wind, and casting powerful rays.

10 Troy: A Total War Saga

• Type: Turn-Based Strategy, Real-Time Tactics

The Trojan War is the most famous conflict in all the Greek legends, and giving it the Total War treatment visualizes the tale in an unprecedented way. The series' trademark real-time battles include ranks of glittering shields as well as heroic duels that capture the spirit of Homer's epic.

While the poem focuses on the final days of the siege, this game lets you conduct the entire ten-year war from the perspective of either the Mycenaean or the Trojans. In addition to raising armies and managing your empire, you'll sail to mysterious islands of the Mediterranean to recruit mythic units to your cause.

9 Kid Icarus

Kid Icarus first jumped onto screens in 1986, quickly becoming one of the more popular games for NES. It's a cult classic, is more lighthearted than other Greek mythology games, and often centers around the protagonist Pit. He must find sacred treasures, traverse platforms, and defeat bosses in order to save the Grecian-inspired world of Angel Land and the goddess Palutena, who is thought to be based on the Greek goddess Athena.

Kid Icarus has come a long way from his humble NES beginnings. The 3DS game Kid Icarus: Uprising was released in 2012 and Pit, Dark Pit, and Palutena became recurring characters in the Smash Bros series.

8 Persona 3

Persona 3 is the game that set the tone of what was to become the success of every Persona game to follow it and is still thought of today as one of the best JRPGs of the 2000s. You play as a character that attends a modern Japanese high school during the day whilst exploring Tartarus in the evening, a uniquely modern take on Greek god games. Tartarus was a location in Greek mythology, described as the deep abyss used for the torment and suffering of the wicked, and the prison for the Titans.

Persona 3 has a vast collection of characters you need to maintain relationships with, all of which have Personas based within Greek and Roman mythology. Journeying to Tartarus also puts you face to face with a plethora of monsters, including the final boss Nyx, the Greek embodiment of night.

While you can't beat a classic, the game got a remake in the form of Persona 3 Reload, which is built from the ground up with the framework of its contemporary, Persona 5, in mind. Though the plot remains largely the same, Reload is a modern reimagining of Persona 3.

7 Okhlos

In Okhlos' delightful twist on Greek mythology games, you play as a mob of ancient Greek civilians, warriors, slaves, and animals who have become sick and tired of the abuse and antics of the gods, and so take up arms to destroy every building, temple, Grecian monster, and Olympian in their path.

Okhlos embodies the scenery and settings of Ancient Greece with lush temples and large fearsome gods, but that's nothing but an obstacle to your mob of toga and sandal-wearing ruffians. Okhlos is a one-of-a-kind battle game, and can even see you wielding the power of iconic Grecian figures such as the hero Heracles, Pandora, and even Socrates.

6 Apotheon

• Type: Platformer, Metroidvania

A 2D action-adventure game that sees you playing within the minimalist artwork from the pottery of Ancient Greece. Apotheon sees you playing hero Nikandreos as he traverses a vibrant artistic world to ascend Mount Olympus and take on the Pantheon of gods to save humankind.

In Apotheon, the gods of Olympus have abandoned the humans, leaving you to traverse Artemis' forests, Apollo's palace, and climb Mount Olympus to take their powers for yourself. The heroic narrative of this Greek god game is a direct look into the heroic tales of ancient lore, with the game even tying in excerpts from famous stories like the Iliad.

5 Age Of Mythology

• Type: Real-Time Strategy

Age of Mythology doesn't deal exclusively with Greek mythology, but the Greek Gods and their champions are front-and-center throughout the game. This RTS classic lets you take on the role of a god of Greece, Egypt, or Scandinavia. Each culture has their own units, buildings, and play style, and the your choice of which god within the pantheon to play further customizes their faction.

If you like Age of Empires but wish it had more cyclops running around, Age of Mythology could be the game for you. The Extended Edition includes both expansions, which not only add the Chinese pantheon but also the Atlanteans — servants of the Greek Titans — to further steep the game in Hellenic lore. This is the closest game there is to a bonafide 'Greek god game,' so if you're hoping to toss lightning bolts as Zeus, it's a perfect pick.

4 Assassins Creed: Odyssey

Assassins Creed Odyssey places you onto the lush streets and volcanic islands of Ancient Greece, moving from an unknown outcast to a living Spartan legend amongst humans and gods as you play through a struggling, war-torn world during the mythological Peloponnesian war.

Assassins Creed Odyssey isn't a game about Greek mythology directly but one that uses the ancient setting. It sees you forge your own path and destiny through Ancient Greece, influencing the history of the stories and land around you as you fight a list of formidable Grecian foes from Aegean naval fleets on the sea to legendary beasts of myth such as the Minotaur, Nemean Lion, and even Medusa, the legendary Gorgon.

3 Immortals Fenyx Rising

• Platform: Stadia, Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S
• Type: Third-Person PoV, Action-Adventure

Immortals Fenyx Rising is a new take on Ancient Greek lore, as you play as Fenyx, a newly recruited winged Demigod on a quest to not destroy the Greek gods, but save them! There is also the DLC 'The Lost Gods' which sees you play as the mortal hero Ash, who ventures to the Pyrite islands in order to locate the missing gods.

This is a grand open-world Greek myth adventure game brought to life, giving you the ability to wield the powers of heroes and gods alike from Achilles Sword to Daedalus' wings to battle monsters such as the Cyclops, Cerberus, and Gorgons, as well as encountering rare mythological creatures such as Griffins.

2 God Of War

• Type: Third-Person PoV, Action-Adventure

The God of War series has recently seen lore-based within Norse mythology. However, the series began its journey in Ancient Greece following the story of protagonist Kratos. It's one of the oldest Greek mythology games available aside from Kid Icarus.

Kratos was a war general forced to kill his wife and daughter unknowingly under Ares' command. After exacting revenge on Ares and ascending to godhood himself, he then goes on to seek revenge against the Olympians, Titans, and his own father for their betrayal. God of War is based in an alternate 495 BC Greece, and as well as gods and beasts also feature critical moments from Grecian tales such as Heracles' 12 Labors, Jason and the Argonauts, and the sinking of Atlantis.

God of War got a direct continuation/soft reboot on the PS4/PS5 which takes the action in a distinctively more Norse-ward direction, but the sequel series still hasn't forgotten Kratos' Greek roots, with his infamous actions in Greece still haunting him in his new home. This is especially true in the free DLC epilogue for God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla, where he faces his past in a more direct manner than just recalling stories and seeing visions.

1 Hades

Hades is a rogue-like dungeon crawler where you defy your father, Hades, the god of the dead. You'll battle your way through a vivid re-imagining of the Grecian Underworld as the immortal prince Zagreus, This game is renowned as one of the best games of its kind to have come out in recent years.

Hades is a new take on the Grecian theme, seeing you hack and slash your way through the underworld to break free of Hades' grip. Zagreus is helped on his journey by the Olympians, who grant him an assortment of powerful boons that help you take on the Underworld's monsters, courtesy of gods such as Zeus, Athena, and Hade's wife and Zagreus' own mother, Persephone. The story and gameplay make Hades not only the best Greek mythology game around, but one of the best games in recent years, period.
