Magma Wyrm Makar is another Great Enemy in Elden Ring. Fighting him is entirely optional and does not affect the story whatsoever. Magma Wyrm Makar guards one of the entrances to Altus Plateau. The main path is through the Grand Lift of Dectus, and you will need two medallions for it. However, if you do not possess them, you can go through Ruin-Strewn Precipice and face the Magma Wyrm boss.

The fight requires proper spacing because of the constant magma the boss spews out. Aside from that, there are more things to avoid, which will be explained in this guide.

Updated December 1, 2023, by Sean Murray: You'll fight at least one Magma Wyrm in your trek through the Lands Between, but you could very well fight more. That's why we've updated this guide to have improved formatting and more links to other helpful Elden Ring topics.

Magma Wyrm Makar is located in Ruin-Strewn Precipice in northern Liurnia of the Lakes. The boss fight is optional, and you can reach Atlas Plateau by interacting with the Grand Lift of Dectus. You can summon Spirit Ashes or online players to help you in the fight. Apart from these, you can summon the NPC Great Horned Tragoth and also Blackguard Big Boggart if you have done his quest and not killed him.

Defeating the boss will reward you with a Curved Greatsword and a dragon heart that you can use at the Cathedral of Dragon Communion in Caelid.

The other Magma Wyrms can be found further on in the game. One is located in Gael Tunnel in the Caelid region, while the other is found near Fort Laiedd in Mount Gelmir. You can get to the latter from the Seethewater Terminus Site of Grace, while you can start from Rotview Balcony Site of Grace to get to the Gael Tunnel entrance.

In both places, you will encounter Alexander, the Living Jar as part of his questline, although Mount Gelmir will be after you defeat Radahn (he can be found deeper in the lava pool).

For Great Wyrm Theodorix, a full-fledged guide has already been crafted.

The boss is resistant to Slash Damage and Frostbite, so avoid using that.

Magma Wyrm Attacks

The boss using magma breath attack at the player.

Most of the boss's attacks are easy to dodge and do not deal much damage. However, there is variety in the attacks making the boss fight enjoyable yet frustrating. Take note, that for the Magma Wyrms in Caelid and Mount Gelmir, one of the main issues is the boss arena itself. The latter is found in a lava pool, while the one in Caelid is found in an extremely tight-fitting chamber.

Only the Magma Wyrm found in Caelid will not stand upright during its second phase.

Magma Wyrm Strategies

Magma Wyrm Makar spewing magma.

There are two main strategies for this fight: first is the melee strategy, mainly focusing on staying near his tail, or the ranged strategy where you make use of the pillar to whittle his health bar down.

Melee Strategy

Tarnished attacking the boss with a melee strategy.

For the melee strategy, you need to stay close to the boss' tail. The boss has a few slam attacks if you are directly under him, so hugging the tail can be quite useful. You can also summon online players or NPCs to help you in the fight. Great Horned Tragoth uses a hammer that does not deal much damage but breaks the boss' poise relatively quickly.

The boss is quite weak against attacks aimed at his head. This will break his poise leading to a critical hit.

Staying away from the magma it spews is the main thing you need to look out for. Standing in magma will make you fat roll and will take damage over time. However, this is particularly important for the Magma Wyrm in Caelid. But for the Magma Wyrm on Mount Gelmir, it is highly recommended to use Torrent for this fight, as well as Spirit Ashes such as Lhutel the Headless. It is imperative that you lure Mount Gelmir's Magma Wyrm away from its lava pool in order to avoid damage.

Equip Rowa Fruit/Golden Rowa for the Mount Gelmir fight, as Torrent takes lava damage.

Ranged Strategy

Tarnished using Sorcery on the boss.

The ranged strategy is easier in comparison. All you need are some long-ranged sorceries, and you are ready. The ability to summon Spirit Ashes makes the fight easier for you. The NPC Great Horned Tragoth can also be useful as he can take aggro while you charge your Sorceries from behind.

You can make use of the middle pillar to keep the boss moving around and not attack much.

If you are facing the boss later in the game, you can use spells like Comet Azur to decimate his health bar. It does consume a lot of mana, but if you have Cerulean Hidden Tear, you can drink the Wondrous Flask and use the spell for more than ten seconds if you do not get interrupted.

As for the Magma Wyrms found in Caelid and Mount Gelmir, using Rock Sling and aiming it at their heads would be best. Equipping Opaline Bubbletear in your Wondrous Flask combinations will be immensely helpful in increasing your defences. You should also consider using Greater Glintstone Shard or Shard Spiral for extra damage.
