In Red Dead Redemption 2, Arthur keeps his guns dry by holding them above his head whenever he crosses through water.

Any gun enthusiast knows that you don’t really want to get a gun wet, and you certainly don’t want to completely submerge a firearm in water. While condensation can cause all the metal components of a gun to rust, submerging it in water will do that in addition to possibly ruining your ammunition.

Rockstar, makers of Red Dead Redemption 2, was obviously going for realism when they made the Wild Western sim. They knew that Arthur would want to keep his guns safe and out of harm’s way--after all, they’re basically your most important tools for survival. So whenever Arthur can, he’ll hold his guns out of the water whenever he’s forced to wade through a river.

Although not nearly as much a problem for modern weapons, old guns like the revolvers and rifles used in RDR2 are especially prone to water damage. There’s no plastic components and few rust-resistant alloys back then, so water is always going to cause some sort of issue. There’s also very little water resistance as there are plenty of gaps between the various components where water can seep through.

It’s even worse for ammo. Manufacturing a century ago wasn’t nearly as precise as it is today, so submerging a cartridge in water meant that you’re likely to get some contact with the powder through tiny breaks in the shell. This can ruin an entire batch of bullets if you’re not careful.

Red Dead Redemption 2 represents this in-game by increasing the degradation of wet guns, causing them to have less range and deal less damage. However, you can still pick up ammunition from submerged corpses and they seem to fire fine. Maybe they’ll fix that in Red Dead Redemption 3.
