The Guardians of the Rift minigame in Old School RuneScape provides players with a fun, engaging way of training their Runecrafting skill, one that has historically been notoriously slow and monotonous to train. You can also earn many neat rewards here, including exclusive gear, talismans, and a special Abyssal Protector pet.

In order to play this minigame, however, you first have to unlock it, which means completing the Temple of the Eye quest. This is a short quest with very few requirements, meaning that most players will be able to start it without any issues. It will also grant the player a good amount of Runecrafting XP, which will go a good way towards the 27 Runecrafting level requirement for Guardians of the Rift.

Requirements And Getting Started

The Temple of the Eye quest has two formal requirements: you must have level 10 Runecrafting, and you must have completed the Enter the Abyss quest, which in turn requires completion of Rune Mysteries. However, you will want 27 Runecrafting by the end of the quest if you want to take part in Guardians of the Rift.

Since there is no combat involved in this quest, it is completable by no-combat accounts and does not grant any combat XP at any point.

Item requirements for this quest are also minimal since many of them are quest-exclusives obtained along the way. But you'll still need to make sure you have a Bucket of Water, a Chisel, and a Pickaxe if you want to power through as quickly as possible.

Once you're ready to start the quest, head to Al Kharid and talk to Wizard Persten - you can find her near the pool of water at the north of Al Kharid. She will show you an Eye Amulet whose secrets she wants your help to uncover. A tracing spell can be cast to determine the amulet's origins, but it will only work in The Abyss, so Wizard Persten entrusts the amulet to you so that you can find out where it came from.

Your next step is to speak with a member of the Zamorak Magical Institute that will help you cast the required tracing spell.

Obtaining The Abyssal Incantation

Head to Varrock, and find the Altar of Zamorak nestled in the town's south-eastern section. Here you will find a Mage of Zamorak who can help you with your amulet. In order for him to do so, however, you'll need to give him a Bucket of Water and a strong cup of tea. You should have the former already, but the tea can be obtained from the Tea Seller at the Eastern entrance to Varrock.

Once you have these items, the Mage will transport you to the centre of The Abyss. Here you will find a Dark Mage - talking to him will prompt you to give him a wash with your bucket of water (yes, really). Once he's clean, the Dark Mage will start casting a spell to discern the amulet's origins. However, he cannot complete the spell without your help - six runic energies surround the room you're in, and you need to work out what order they go in so that the spell can be successfully cast.

Unfortunately, the correct order of these runic energies is random for each player, so you're going to have to work it out for yourself. When you click the correct runic energy it will turn white, and clicking the incorrect energy will turn all energies back to their original colour, meaning you have to start all over again. This will require a fair amount of trial and error, but you'll get it right eventually.

When you do, the Dark Mage will give you an Abyssal Incantation - but you'll need the help of wizards to understand it.

Wizards' Tower

Return to Wizard Persten in Al Kharid. She will redirect you to Archmage Sedridor in the Wizards' Tower, who will be able to help you reach wherever the amulet can lead you to. In the basement of Wizards' Tower, speak to Sedridor, who will, after a bit of persuasion, agree to help you with the Abyssal Incantation. But, while he's preparing by making sure everything is safe, you'll have to recruit some helpers from among the other wizards of the tower. And in true RPG fashion, this requires solving a puzzle that has nothing to do with anything.

Speak to Wizard Traiborn on the tower's second floor, and he'll ask for your help solving the puzzle. You'll need to track down each of his three apprentices within the tower, who will each give you different parts of the puzzle. Once you have all these clues, you can give the final answer to Traiborn - it is 11.

Once Traiborn's apprentices have agreed to help you, return to Sedridor in the basement to finally cast the incantation that will take you where the amulet leads.

Entering The Rift

A cutscene will play where you are transported to an underwater temple: the setting for the Guardians of the Rift minigame. An abyssal portal opens up and swallows Wizard Persten - your goal now is to help the Great Guardian close the rift to prevent abyssal entities from entering the temple through it.

The rest of the quest serves as a tutorial for the Guardians of the Rift minigame. Once you have completed this, you will discover that Wizard Persten has been lost to the rift and is assumed dead. So, the Great Guardian needs the help of humans to close any rifts that pop up in the temple. Traiborn's apprentices agree to stay and provide this help, leading to the formation of the minigame.

Leave through the portal and inform Sedridor of what has happened - this marks the end of the quest. As well as access to Guardians of the Rift, completing this quest will earn you 1 Quest Point, a Medium Pouch for Runecrafting, and 5,000 Runecrafting XP.
