Sonic had to undergo a pretty extensive makeover before his feature-length film hit theaters, but what about his beloved sidekick?

Sonic the Hedgehog hit theaters this weekend and pretty much everyone going to see it appears to be pleasantly surprised with what they're seeing. At least that seems to be the general consensus. Also, it should probably be highlighted at this point if it hasn't become obvious already, some pretty serious spoilers lie ahead so if you haven't seen the movie yet, look away now.

There was a fear among Sonic fans (let's be honest, among everyone who saw it) after seeing the very first trailer that this movie was going to be terrible. The main reason that the trailer received such fierce backlash was due to the poorly designed star. Sonic looked as if he had been designed by someone going off of a written description but who had never actually seen the real blue hedgehog at all.

That forced Paramount and Sega to return to the drawing board. The movie's release date was pushed back three months and Sonic was redesigned. The new blue blur was far easier on the eye and looked more like the hedgehog we know and love. Now that we have seen the movie, or more specifically its mid-credits scene, we're wondering whether something else had to be changed too.

The mid-credits scene shows Tails arriving on Earth through a ring, revealing that he is on the look out for Sonic. Movie Tails looks very much like his video game counterpart, and we're assuming there will be no complaints about his design. However, we're assuming that movie Tails originally looked more like movie Sonic's original design. Something movie-goers would have had a major issue with.

Chances are Sonic fans will never get the chance to see what the original design for the movie version of Tails looked like. There's also a chance that he never even existed. Perhaps the post-credits scene hadn't even been put together when the first trailer was released. As for Sonic's original design, if there's a Sonic Generations 2 and he doesn't show up as a villain, Sega has really missed an opportunity.
