It would be an understatement to say that the Resident Evil series has been influential in the gaming industry, as it was one of the flagship series in the horror-survival genre. Though it's still considered a horror-survival staple, installments following Resident Evil 4 started to go in another direction and focused more on action - until Resident Evil 7, which took the series back to its roots. It's hard to find anything that can compare to the Resident Evil series, given its place in the horror hierarchy... But there are some things that come close.

10 Dead Rising

Dead Rising follows photojournalist Frank West when he becomes trapped in a shopping mall in Colorado during a zombie outbreak. He wants to uncover the truth and be the first to break the story, but he has to deal with surviving the outbreak, rescuing survivors, and dealing with psychopaths that lurk through the mall.

The most obvious similarity between Dead Rising and Resident Evil is the zombies, but actually, Frank West with his love for sarcasm is reminiscent of Leon Kennedy, the protagonist of several Resident Evil titles.

9 The Silent Hill Series

The Silent Hill series follows several different protagonists as they navigate and try to survive in the eponymous, monster-infested town.

Harry Mason is searching for his young daughter after a car accident but finds something much bigger. James Sunderland has received a letter from his deceased wife summoning him back to their special place. Heather Mason is just trying to learn what happened to her father. Travis Grady makes the mistake of saving a girl from a burning house. Alex Shepherd returns from war to find his brother has gone missing and his family has fallen apart. Murphy Pendleton is stranded when his prison bus crashes.

The Silent Hill series and the Resident Evil series have been compared to one another for decades, and with each game's intricately detailed puzzles, it's easy to understand why. Silent Hill takes a less aggressive approach to horror, however: engaging in constant combat will leave you with nothing to defend yourself.

8 Alone In The Dark (2008)

via: gamebyte.com

The first game in the Alone In The Dark series is widely considered to be the starting point of the survival-horror genre as it's known today.

In the 2008 release, main character Edward Carnby returns. He's a paranormal investigator who's suffering from amnesia as he recovers from an exorcism. An unknown force has been wreaking havoc in New York, and Edward has no choice but to dive into the darkness to discover the truth.

Alone In The Dark (2008) is similar to Resident Evil because of its third person camera option and puzzle-based gameplay.

7 Dead Island

Dead Island follows a group of four survivors who have found themselves stranded on a zombie-infested island. In single-player, there will only be one character during actual gameplay, though they will all appear in cut-scenes.

The game starts off in an idyllic island paradise and moves more inland to a run-down town. From the beginning, there are countless zombies to fight, missions to complete, and areas to explore. As the survivors dig deeper into the world around them, they begin to realize that some things don't quite add up.

Dead Island is similar to the later games in the Resident Evil series in terms of gameplay. However, the plot has several things in common with the series overall.

6 Alan Wake

Alan Wake follows the eponymous main character as he head back to the town of Bright Falls, Washington, where his wife had disappeared during a vacation. Though he's a best-selling thriller novelist, he has no recollection of writing his most recent novel... but that doesn't stop the story from manifesting itself and coming true all around him.

The key point of Alan Wake that makes it similar to Resident Evil is the atmosphere. There's a sense of isolation, always, and anticipation for what will happen next. The creators do not believe that it's a survival horror game, and technically speaking, they're right - it's a lovechild of an action game and a psychological thriller, so it falls somewhere close to Resident Evil 4.

5 Dying Light

Dying Light is set in the quarantined city of Harran. It follows Kyle Crane, an undercover operative for the GRE, as he works to silence Kadir Suleiman, better known as Rais, a political figure who has disavowed the GRE after they failed to save his brother, Hassan. Upon his arrival, he is rescued by the residents of The Tower, where he quickly sets to work on gaining their trust in order to complete his mission.

However, as things progress, he begins to question the GRE's motives, and he's faced with having to choose if he wants to complete his mission or try to save the city.

Dying Light is similar to Resident Evil in terms of atmosphere and the involvement of government officials, giving the story a thrilling element of conspiracy. The core gameplay revolves around the use of parkour to get around the city and fight for your life.

4 Days Gone

Days Gone tells the story of former biker gang member Deacon St. John as he tries to find his wife, Sarah, in a post-apocalyptic version of Oregon. The two were separated  when she was critically stabbed and had to be evacuated on a helicopter from the National Emergency Restoration Organization that didn't have the capacity to carry them both.

The world is overwhelmed by Freakers, aggressive infected creatures, and dangerous humans, but all Deacon cares about is finding his way back to Sarah.

The plot of Days Gone is, in a sense, similar to Resident Evil 5. After learning that his wife is alive, Deacon becomes determined to find her, the same way that Chris Redfield did with Jill Valentine.

3 The Last Of Us

The Last Of Us is set in a post-apocalyptic world that's been torn asunder by a mutated strain of the Cordyceps fungus, turning infected humans into one of several different types of cannibalistic creatures and leaving the remaining population to fight for themselves.

The main character, Joel, is a smuggler that has tasked with escorting a young girl named Ellie, who was bitten three weeks ago but still hasn't succumbed to the infection, across the United States.

The Last of Us is similar to Resident Evil in that it utilizes stealth and discourages the player from fighting every enemy that they come across, in order to preserve their supplies and better their chances for survival.

2 Haunting Ground

Haunting Ground follows Fiona Belli when she awakens following a car accident only to find herself in a strange castle. She befriends a White Shepherd named Hewie and sets out to find a way to escape the castle. Unfortunately for her, there are a handful of enemies that are determined to make sure she can't do that.

Unlike most protagonists, Fiona is completely ill-equipped to handle herself in a physical fight, and even if she were, she doesn't have any weapons. She must rely on giving commands to Hewie, hiding herself, and using things in the environment to retaliate. She can also craft small items that will help slow her attackers down, but for the most part, she's completely vulnerable. The game focuses on, and even plays up, that vulnerability, making it a psychologically disturbing adventure with a protagonist that you simply want to protect.

Haunting Ground has a similar spirit to Resident Evil 0, where Rebecca Chambers was forced to step up.

1 The Evil Within

The Evil Within tells the story of Sebastian Castellanos, a detective for the Krimson City PD, when an investigation into a mass murder goes wrong. He and his partner, Joseph Oda, as well as a Junior Detective named Juli Kidman, are thrown into a twisted, nightmare version of the world that's filled with terrifying enemies. As the story unfolds and he fights for survival, Sebastian finds himself with more questions than answers.

Shinji Mikami, the creator of Resident Evil, directed The Evil Within and it shows. The atmosphere is immersive and dynamic while the gameplay calls for stealth, discretion, and actual skill-building, making the player think on their feet and work on their reaction time.
