Looking back on the year that's been is part and parcel of celebrating a new one. While the past two years may not have a whole lot to celebrate – there's a pandemic going on in case you missed it – Rust developer Facepunch Studios might argue that selling 12 million copies of their game is a good reason to celebrate.

"2021 was an exceptional year for Rust in almost all regards, after 8 years of continuous development Rust has gone from strength to strength," said the blog post. "In 2021 Rust blew up on Twitch, we saw record-high player counts, released Voice Props DLC Pack, World revamp, missions, freight trains, underwater labs, gestures, submarines, MLRS and so much more."

December last year also saw the game complete eight years since launching in early access way back in 2013. Rust's full release came five years later, in February 2018. The game has only been growing since, and is regularly part of Steam's top game charts.

The blog post also offered up an interactive look at some of the major updates that have come to the game over the past year. These include features like the camper module, wounding update and voice props DLC, fishing village shop, and major updates like Going Deep, Darkness Falls Halloween update, and a graphical overhaul of the entire map.

Rust appears to have had a much better 2021 than most of us, based on some of the stats revealed in its 2021 round-up. 12,481,079 copies of the game have been sold since the publication of the round-up, with 1,111,846 DLC packs in total. On the social media side of things, the Rust Discord surpassed 400,000 users, garnered a record 1.37 million concurrent viewers on Twitch.

2022 however, is going to get a bit chilly, as Rust has some snow themed updates coming up. New snow covered monuments will be coming to the game along with new weapons, deployables, events, vehicles, and animals. The game will also be hosting Twitch drops in support of Spanish creators of Egolands. Watching their streams will earn you a whole bunch of themed goodies.
