It took a few years, but 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim has officially surpassed the 400,000 sales threshold. Released in November 2019 in Japan, the game was eventually launched worldwide the following September.

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim was developed by Vanillaware – a Japanese studio that's also worked on Dragon's Crown, Muramasa, and Odin Sphere. It garnered impressive reviews at launch and is currently sitting with an 85 on Metacritic. The title would go on to earn a Jury Selection title at the 24th Japan Media Arts Festival – although its sales would take some time to catch up with the critical acclaim.

Vanillaware's sci-fi game hit 300,000 sales in January, and it's great to see the lesser-known title still has some life in it.

If you're unfamiliar with 13 Sentinels, it's a 2D side-scrolling adventure that takes place in a sprawling sci-fi world. Here's how publisher Atlus describes it:

"Vanillaware, the storytellers behind Odin Sphere and Dragon’s Crown, craft a sci-fi mystery epic spanning thirteen intertwining stories. Uncover the truth and delve into a 2D side-scrolling adventure featuring gorgeous art and environments. Then, battle the kaiju in fast-paced, top-down combat. Customize the Sentinels with an arsenal of mechsuit weaponry, and fight to defend humanity!"

13 Sentinels features Vanillaware's unique hand-painted art style, customizable mechs, and a deep story told through visions of both the past and future.

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is available on PS4.
