Anime has been growing at a rapid pace in the western hemisphere of the world and 2018 is gearing up to be a promising year for anime TV shows. With Crunchyroll and Funimation joined through VRV streaming, along with Netflix set to create dozens of new anime content — 2018 is a great year to be an anime fan. Even Amazon is dipping their toes into more anime content.

With this increase in popularity, fans will see the return of some classic series’ this coming year, including ones that have been dormant for up to a decade. More fans also equals new content. American-based companies are joining forces with Japanese production companies to produce new and original content as fast as possible. With millions of dollars to be made, the classic big boys of the west want their share of the pie too.

Anime in Japan is not like American cartoons that are primarily created for a younger audience. Around a 100 episodes of anime air daily on Japanese television, with most having prime time slots. For decades, popular manga has been being transformed into television shows, movies, and video games around the globe.

In honor of anime becoming more popular in western cultures, we’ve put together a list of the hottest anime being released in 2018. Some of the series are sequels while others have written their own timeline, or are completely new and original. From Titans to various SAO content, here is the best anime TV shows you didn’t know about for 2018.

15 Prepare For Attack On Titan Season 3

There’s been tons of speculation regarding a season 3 for Attack on Titan. Would fans have to wait several years again, or did the shortened episode count in season 2 mean that a new one was coming in 2018? WIT Studio and the producers have stepped up to the plate this time, bringing Tetsuro Araki and Masashi Koizuka back as chief director and director for season 3 Attack on Titan.

A teaser has been released which shows three individuals standing by an ocean with the words “Behold, the sea” etched over them.

Prior to the release of season 3, a film will be released in Japan titled Attack on Titan: The Roar of Awakening. The theatrical release is supposed to be a movie version of season 2, which will release on January 13, 2018. The official release date for Attack on Titan season 3 is July of 2018.

14 Tokyo Ghoul Is Back With Tokyo Ghoul:Re

The extremely popular horror anime and manga Tokyo Ghoul is releasing a sequel for 2018 called Tokyo Ghoul:Re. This series starts with a new weapon created by the Commission of Counter Ghoul, who has sworn to do whatever is necessary to protect humanity from predator Ghouls.

Their new weapon, however, is an experimental one. The Commission of Counter Ghoul “implants human investigators with a Ghoul’s Kagune, giving them Ghoul powers and abilities.” The only setback is that both the procedure, and the recently formed Qs Squad have yet to be tested.

Tokyo Ghoul:Re series is bringing back familiar characters, along with a host of new ones. Creator Sui Ishida is still in charge and has already released the manga for this upcoming hit anime in 2018.

13 The Final Season Of Fairy Tail Is Upon Us

Creator Hiro Mashima of the hit manga and anime series Fairy Tail recently revealed on Twitter that the final season will be released in 2018. While no set date has been confirmed yet, Funimation Films has already started the promotion with a screening of Fairy Tail: Dragon Cry at 300 American and 12 Canadian theaters this past August.

Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine has also stated that the manga is coming to an end. However, Mashima recently tweeted “Even though the original manga is ending, I don't think Fairy Tail is done just yet. I have a lot of plans, so please look forward to them.”

To date there are over 250 episodes of Fairy Tail anime content with at least 35 million volumes of the manga in circulation.

12 Dominating Sword Art Online Has Two Series’ Launching In 2018

The third season of Sword Art Online has been launched and is expected to release sometime in 2018. Yoshitsugu Matsuoka as Kirito and Haruka Tomatsu as Asuna are expected to return and star in the new Sword Art Online: Alicization series. If you want to read the manga before its release, the Sword Art Online: Alicization story arc can be found in volumes 9 through 18 of the original novel series.

In addition to Sword Art Online: Alicization, there is also another series planned for 2018. A television anime adaptation was recently announced for the Sword Art Online Alternative Gun Gale Online novels. Written by Kino's Journey author Keiichi Sigsawa, the story focuses on Karen Kohiruimaki and a player named Pitohui. Pitohui pressures the pink-clad Llen into joining the Battle Royale-style tournament known as Squad Jam.

11 A Questionable Return For One Punch Man Season 2

One Punch Man dominated the anime community in 2015 with its first season, and fans have been eagerly anticipating its second season. While it’s not unusual for a couple of years to pass in between seasons, fans might not get the same One Punch Man they originally fell in love with. Season one was originally animated by Madhouse Studios, but it was recently announced that season two will be animated by J.C.Staff Studios instead.

One Punch Man is a story about Saitama who wants to become a hero because it seems like it’s fun. He not only gets his wish, but becomes the strongest hero to ever have existed.

An official release date for One Punch Man season two has yet to be released, but is confirmed for 2018.

10 RPG Video Game Persona 5 Gets An Anime Adaptation

The rpg game Persona 5 was an absolute hit in 2017 and its planning an even bigger follow up with an anime series for 2018. Atlus and A-1 Pictures are working together to create Persona 5: The Animation – The Day Breakers. Thankfully, most of the voice cast from the game will be returning for the new anime series.

While an official storyline has yet to be confirmed, most believe it will follow a story based on the hit video game. The arc in Persona 5 follows a group of rebel teenagers who see themselves living in a doomed system that promotes a life of slavery. Seeking freedom, they embark on adventures which allows them to enter corrupt adults hearts in order to transform them and change the world they live in.

9 Netflix Introduces A.I.C.O Incarnation

Netflix has dabbled with anime for the past couple years and is planning on going “all in” for 2018. Coming in the spring of 2018 is a new anime called A.I.C.O Incarnation. The science-fiction series will be directed by Kazuya Murata (Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet and Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos) in conjunction with Bones studio (My Hero Academia, Eureka Seven).

A.I.C.O Incarnation takes place in Japan during the year 2035. An accident (known as the Burst) results an uncontrollable artificial life form called Matter. Two years after the accident, 15-year-old Aiko Tachibana discovers she has a secret in her body. To discover its meaning, Aiko, a team of divers, and her guide Yuya must travel to the center of the Burst known as Primary Point.

8 Fate/Extra PlayStation Portable Game Becomes An Anime

The popular PS portable game adaptation is set to release in January of 2018 and is titled Fate/EXTRA Last Encore. Shaft studios will be in charge of the animation, along with Kinoko Nasu (Fate/Stay Night and Kara no Kyoukai) will be in charge of the series’ composition. Character designs for the anime will be based on Aruko Wada’s original artwork.

Fate/EXTRA Last Encore is set to follow the story arc in Fate/Stay Night and its prequel Fate/Zero. Netflix released in November of 2017 an alternate universe timeline of the Fate franchise titled Fate/Apocrypha which doesn’t follow the previously created storyline. Slightly lacking in character development, Fate/Apocrypha has killer fight scenes that any fan of Dragon Ball fan will certainly appreciate.

Fate/EXTRA Last Encore should encompass both a great story arc along with visually stimulating fight scenes. It’s set to release from Type-Moon in January of 2018.

7 Prepare For Seven Deadly Sins: Revival Of The Commandments

Seven Deadly Sins manga has sold over 10 million copies since its release in 2015 and was previously adapted to a first season followed by a mini season. Seven Deadly Sins: Revival of The Commandments will continue the story based off the manga series and is set to release January 6, 2018.

It was also announced that the rock band FLOWxGRANRODEO, who has performed previously in the ending of Seven Deadly Sins will return to do the opening.

The story follows a magical group of Knights who were framed for the murder of the Great Holy Knight Zaratras. The group has been re-uniting through season one of Seven Deadly Sins and is all set to return in Seven Deadly Sins: Revival of The Commandments following season one’s cliffhanger.

6 Discover New Anime With Grancrest Senki

Grancrest Senki is a new anime coming in 2018 by creator Mizuno Ryo. Ryo has previously created Record of Lodoss War which has sold over 10 million copies. A-1 Pictures, who has done work on Sword Art Online will be the animation studio.

The story of Grancrest Senki is about a world full of chaos. Lords of the continent are the only ones who can stop the madness with a holy seal. The Lords however turn on one another in order to gain more power and neglect the people they are supposed to be protecting. Magician Silka and a character named Theo form a master-servant contract and set out to change the world.

Ryo Mizuno and Satoshi Yano are in charge of the composition of Grancrest Senki, along with Hiroshi Yako as the character design. Yugo Kanno is in charge of music and Light Works is handling the screenplay.

5 Netflix Perfect Bones Is Now B: The Beginning

Netflix has more original anime content coming in the spring of 2018 with the series B: The Beginning. Formerly titled as Perfect Bones, the series is created by Kazuto Nakazawa (Kill Bill's animated segment, Moondrive, and Parasite Dolls) and Production I.G.

B: The Beginning, as described by Netflix, takes place in a world powered by advanced technology, crime and action unfold in the archipelagic nation of Cremona. The protagonist Koku and a legendary of the royal police force named Keith, join a variety of characters amongst a city plagued by a serial killer named Killer B.

Netflix plans to release 12 episodes in the spring of 2018 with Nakazawa and Yoshiki Yamakawa directing B: The Beginning series. The screenplay will be written by Katsuya Ishida and Yoshihiro Ike is composing the music.

4 Steampunk Survival Action Resumes In Kabaneri Of The Iron Fortress Season 2

The highly acclaimed anime series Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress is officially getting a second season that is due to release in 2018. The anime brings back director Tetsuro Araki and Wit Studio, the team responsible for Attack on Titan. Ichiro Okouchi who created Code Geass is also returning as the script writer.

The Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress story takes place on an island where humans hide themselves against the threat of zombie-like beings with steel hearts known as Kabane. The only mode of transportation between stations is armored locomotives called Hayajiro.

Other notable names working on the project include Haruhiko Mikimoto (Macross 7, and Gunbuster) who is in charge of character creation, along with Hiroyuki Sawano (Attack on Titan and Aldnoah.Zero) is composing the music.

3 Trilogy Of Code Geass Movies Plus Season 3 Announced

Code Geass has three movies set to release from the fall of 2017 through 2018. Lelouch of the Revolution: The Awakening Path, will be released on October 21, 2017. Code Geass: Lelouch of the Revolution: The Rebellion Path will premiere on February 10, 2018, and the third film, Lelouch of the Revolution: The Imperial Path, will be released in March of 2018 according to their Twitter page.

Also announced Code Geass R3 has been green-lit, but no official release date has yet been announced. It’s been almost a decade since Code Geass R2 which is why the production team decided to release the trilogy of movies before the premier of Code Geass R3.

Code Geass: Lelouch Of The Resurrection is being directed by Goro Taniguchi, who has previously been a director on Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion and Code Geass R2.

2 Angolmois Anime Adaptation Set For 2018

The Kadokawa Corporation recently announced that Nanahiko Takagi’s Angolmois manga is set to have an anime adaptation. No official date has been given yet for the premier, but it’s been noted that the series is currently on track for a 2018 release.

Kadokawa Corporation describes Angolmois - Genkou Kassenki as a story about a great king who comes from the other side of the sea and a fierce battle starts to protect the island of Tsushima. It is a historical anime that includes the incident Genkou and the beginning of Samurai.

Takayuki Kuriyama is in charge of directing Angolmois - Genkou Kassenki, in conjunction writer Shogo Yasukawa (Jojo's episodes) and Naz studio. Character designs are being done by Masayori Komine (Aquarion Evol animator) and Shougo Yasukawa is handling the composition.

1 Overlord Anime Is Getting A Second Season

During the screenings for the Overlord: The Dark Warrior movie it was officially announced that the Overlord anime will have a second season coming in 2018.

The Overlord story takes place in the year 2138 and virtual reality gaming is super popular. One day a popular game called Yggdrasil is quietly shut down, but the protagonist Momonga decides to not log out. Momonga transforms into the image of a skeleton as "the most powerful wizard." The game world continues to change, with non-player characters feeling emotion. Having no place in society, this ordinary young man named Momonga makes it his goal to take over this new world he’s living in.

Overlord is more than just a manga, film, and anime production — as it’s a popular video game too. The manga series to date has sold over 2.5 million copies.
