There are a ton of words one could use to describe the Borderlands series. The list is massive. The games are completely messed up in the best way possible, hilarious, and absurdly entertaining overall. But above all, the series is truly unique. An action-RPG set on another planet with first-person-shooter gameplay is a tough thing to pull off, but Gearbox and 2K have knocked it out of the park three times with these games; each slightly more of a gong-show than the last.

As we said, the Borderlands series tells the story of the planet Pandora, and the Vault Hunters who venture there in search of a mythical vault (no kidding, right?) which is believed to hold untold riches and loot. Along their journey, these adventurers encounter nasty and terrifying wildlife, along with legions of bandits and other opponents who want to stand in their way, attacking with all manner of weapons. The feel of the game combines a Grand Theft Auto-style open world, with ludicrous amounts of firepower, unleashed from a first person perspective, in a world reminiscent of Mad Max if it were re-imagined by Gary Busey on an acid trip.

What really adds to this game's already impressive list of attributes is humor. The villains are quirky, dark and ludicrous all at once, the NPCs are an eclectic group, each with their own interesting back stories and strange personalities. Add together this first person-action RPG, post apocalyptic, hilarious mess, and you get not only a brilliant gaming experience, but also some great memes. From Pandora logic to some amazing pop culture references, here are some painfully funny Borderlands memes.

15 Face McShooty

via me.me

If you can't figure this one out, it may be time to either go back to school or just stick to the Call of Duty franchise (forgive me, I like to give the CoD fanboys a hard time). There are plenty of simple and quick missions in this franchise, but none with the kind of ludicrous simplicity of this one. When you encounter Face McShooty in the Thousand Cuts area of Borderlands 2, he demands something very simple. As his name and the name of the mission would imply, he wants one thing and won't shut up until he gets it. He wants to get shot in the face. Why does he want this? We never really find out, but that's the beauty of Pandora, sometimes you don't ask questions, you just do what you gotta do.

14 This Is Painfully True

via memecenter.com

We never thought that there would be such a thing as "too many guns" in any video game. There isn't, of course, but if there was such a thing, the Borderlands games would be the most fitting examples. The first game in the series boasted a Guinness World Record 17.75 million different guns. Of course, they weren't all designed one by one, but there are tons of guns, and attachments and a randomizing function within the game that generates loot.

With that said, however, when you pick up a new weapon every couple of minutes, and forget to check your inventory, it can take a while to determine if you're using the best gun for the current situation. At times, it can feel like shooting people, looting, and completing tasks are secondary objectives to the necessary job of checking one's inventory.

13 You Have To Switch It Up

via memecenter.com

Here's an "adult" meme if there ever was one for Borderlands. This is the Badass Psycho, one of the tougher among the psycho type of enemy. They don't attack from a distance, but try to rush the player and engage in some melee warfare with their massive axe. Like most enemies in the game, they look absolutely ridiculous, with one massive arm and one withered, stunted one.

While their disfigured appearance may simply come from having carried that axe in one arm, rather than two-handing it, it looks like they may have just engaged in an immense amount of self-love for a long time and forgot to switch arms. We have to wonder, is something like this possible, just from spanking it?

12 Pretty Accurate

via pinterest.com

Like we said before, there are tons of guns in these games. Most gaming franchises suffer from "video game logic," with regard to how much loot and weaponry a character can haul. Being realistic, franchises like Call of Duty get it right, giving characters a single primary weapon, a secondary, and then a knife, along with grenades or other explosives. Even Fallout, which allows a couple hundred lbs worth of guns and gear, is more realistic than this. The Borderlands games allow characters four equipped weapons and a backpack that can carry dozens more, depending on upgrades. This is about as far from reality as a video game can come, but we aren't complaining about being able to carry as many guns as we want all at once. It can be very convenient if you stock your backpack with elemental guns and specialty weapons.

11  Hilarious Gun Name

via forum.gearboxsoftware.com

This hilarious meme features actor John Goodman as Walter Shoback from the legendary movie The Big Lebowski. The character Walter, who is a Vietnam War veteran with a slight temper problem, has pulled a gun out and is threatening people in a bowling alley after a slight foul on the part of one of their opponents.

While he's brandishing an M1911A1, there is no question that an Unkempt Harold, one of the best pistols in the series (and fairly easy to get one's hands on), would be a better bet in order to put people in "a world of pain." Very popular among players, the Unkempt Harold gets its name from the film and character Dirty Harry. The gun fires three shots, which spread out to become seven after some travel.

10 The Skyrim Reference

via me.me

This is a brilliant shout-out from one amazing open world mess to one of the most iconic games ever made. For those who don't remember (has anyone forgotten Skyrim), The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim featured numerous NPCs, most of whom are guards in cities, who would greet the player character with the phrase "I used to be an adventurer like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee." The line became a meme in and of itself, earning parodies and of course, this awesome gag.

It didn't take long while traversing the map in Borderlands 2, before we heard something oddly familiar. The inclusion of the line "I used to be a Vault Hunter like you, until I took a bullet to the knee," is one of the best Easter Eggs in the game.

9 The Other Scavengers Are Useless

via forums.gearboxsoftware.com

Eridium is an incredibly rare and important element in Borderlands 2; and came into play on Pandora after the closing events of the first game. It has a number of uses, and is required for several quests and to access certain areas and people. But most of all, Eridium is necessary for many upgrades throughout the game.

Other than money and guns, there aren't many things more important in the game than Eridium. This makes us question why this rare and valuable is being left lying around as much as it is. Don't misunderstand, it's not just sitting around everywhere, but we imagine nobody would be silly enough to leave their precious metal collection sitting in a cardboard box in the street.

8 Get It Together, Jack

via imgur.com

There are enough reasons to love the Borderlands games. The gameplay is entertaining and fairly simplistic, the quests are interesting and vary to some extent. The enemies say funny things, and of course, the main villain is a sinister, eccentric man. Handsome Jack, who was introduced for Borderlands 2 and is one of the most well-received bad guys in recent video game history.

Handsome Jack is one of those bad guys who has total control over the world in which he lives, but he still manages to get beaten by a ragtag group of nobodies. In the case of this meme, yes, he is the head of Hyperion Corporation. In the games, the "New-U Station" is the machine through which the player character can be revived. These stations are created and operated by Hyperion. So Jack, who hates the Vault Hunters, is also in charge of the gaming element through which they stay alive.

7 South Park Reference

via raptr.com

There are few television shows as awesome and quotable as South Park. What started out as a slapstick cartoon with little to offer outside of toilet humor and vulgarity has blossomed into some of the finest social commentaries the entertainment business has had over the last twenty seasons. The twenty-first season will start later this year, to the great anticipation of many fans.

There is a loading screen message in Borderlands 2 that echoes an iconic moment from South Park. Way back in the sixth season of the show, the main characters of the show went to Aspen, Colorado and the kids took skiing lessons. The instructor told them to make their skis straight like french fries to go fast, and like a slice of pizza to slow down. "If you french fries when you need to pizza, you're gonna have a bad time." The internet gave this line the meme treatment, and Borderlands 2 used "Elementally-charged enemies resist damage of their own elemental type. If you try to kill a fire skag with a fire weapon, you're gonna have a bad time", as a loading screen message.

6 JustClaptrapThings

via pinterest.com

"Justgirlythings" is a series of images, usually of young women, with captions dealing with life, romance, and anything girls experience. While the originals are usually corny or romantic and often get shared on social media by the most boring women you'll ever know, the parodies are amazing, including captions like "replacing your sister's insulin with [drugs]" and "throwing your girlfriend into a river as a sacrifice to theRainn God.

This one features one of the most popular characters in this series, Claptrap. This ridiculous robot has some of the funniest quotes in the game and talks to himself when people aren't around. Possibly his best quote is "wanna hear the new dubstep song I wrote? wubwubwubwubwubwub."

5 Still Waiting...

via imgflip.com

This meme is a very simple one to recycle for many different topics. Basically any situation in which one feels like they have been waiting forever is perfect for this shot, implying we'll all be dead and rotted away by the time something shows up.

We feel this way about Grand Theft Auto 6, Fallout 5 and the next Elder Scrolls game. It feels like we will never see these games. Of course, this meme is not useful for Call of Duty or Assassin's Creed; both games that are far more reliably pumped out (except for AC skipping 2016).

There are plenty of rumors right now about Borderlands 3, and depending on who you're listening to, it may be out in 2018, but who really knows, rumors are just rumors until a studio makes a concrete announcement.

4 That Escalated Quickly...

via imgur.com

We wish Mr. Torgue had a larger part in Borderlands 2. He may be one of the most quotable characters in any video game, let alone this series. This massive, muscle-bound, shouting maniac is the founder of the gun manufacturer that shares his name, and is a more prominent character in a couple of the game's DLC's.

"That Sentence had too many syllables, APOLOGIZE!" is just one of this character's many memorable quotes. Other classics include: "Right now, you're ranked fifty in the badass leaderboards, which puts you behind my grandma but ahead of a guy she gummed to death. IT TOOK SEVERAL HOURS."

3 Minecraft Shout Out!

via memegen.com

Few games have had the impact on the world of gaming that Minecraft has. Despite the unorthodox style of gameplay, unusual experience, not to mention the lack of graphical quality, this game has become one of the highest selling of all time, second overall, only to Tetris (but it's way behind that game). With the amount of pop culture references in Borderlands 2, it is no surprise that they included these bad guys from the Minecraft world.

Much like the real creepers in Minecraft, these guys aren't the toughest enemies in the game, as they have no ranged attack, and move fairly slowly. If they get too close to the player, they will explode, but most people who aren't completely useless will be able to fill them with bullets fairly quickly. They can be found in the Caustic Caverns part of the map.

2 How Are You Still In Business, Marcus?

via knowyourmeme.com

A great example of "video game logic," is when quest givers reward the player-character with far more than a job is worth. Rewarding someone hundreds (or even thousands) of dollars to drive a prostitute across town (Grand Theft Auto) is a ludicrous concept, but many games have their own equivalent. Marcus Kincaid of the Borderlands series is the world's largest weapons retailer, selling ammo and firearms, and, of course, destroying his competition by any means necessary.

But much like just about any other occasional quest giving character, sometimes we question the wisdom of Marcus' reward system. Most of his early quests are pretty simple, and completion doesn't benefit him that much, but he pays very well. We aren't complaining, but just have some concerns about the guy's bottom line.

1 More Like Greatest Gun Ever

via memecenter.com

There is an optional mission in Borderlands 2 entitled "The Bane." The mission itself is fairly simple, and requires little more than wasting some skags and bandits. At the end of the mission, you get what may well be the most entertaining but also irritating guns ever to be featured in a video game. This Hyperion submachine gun boasts amazing damage for the class of gun, but it comes with some drawbacks. First off, it vastly decreases movement speed, but it leaves aiming and rotation speed the same. Second, the gun talks. But it doesn't talk normally by any means. When you equip the weapon, it shrieks "SWAPPIN' WEAPONS!" When it needs to be reloaded it shouts "RELOAD" or "REEEEELOADIN'!" While it fires however, it screams an excruciatingly annoying sound, that could probably drive a person mad.
