One moment, you're watching the teaser for a game coming out in two years while thinking "this looks like it's going to be the greatest game ever made." The next moment, you're looking at the disc wondering why you just bought a $60 drink coaster.

It's easy to get lost in the hype. We all get lost sometimes—lost in movies, music, or any kind of entertainment. But with games, it's a whole new kind of offensive when a title doesn't deliver. Why? Because $60, that's why!

If a game cost $15 and didn't have an aggressive five year marketing plan, maybe we wouldn't be as devastated when we find out it's a hunk of junk. The fact that the game industry encourages pre-orders nowadays only makes the wait worse and when the game isn't good, it makes the pain impossible to bear. Our hopes get up. We champion the game. We want it to succeed. Sometimes, we want to believe that the critics are wrong and that they don't understand gamers, so we go out and buy the game anyway, only to find that it's exactly as terrible as people are saying it is. For shame.

One day, the hype will equal the result. One day, our games will be as good as we hope for. Until then, here's 15 Overhyped Games That Should Have Never Been Made:

15 Star Wars: Battlefront

The original Star Wars: Battlefront games for PlayStation 2 and Xbox were some of the greatest games ever made for that console generation. So, when EA announced they were rebooting the franchise, the hype train started chuggin'.

But when the new Battlefront finally landed, most having already purchased the deluxe edition and season pass, nearly everyone was disappointed. Where's the single player campaign? Where are the space battles? Why do my Jedi heroes move so clunkily? Why are these weapons so unexciting? To rub salt in the wound, the new Battlefront 2 was announced shortly after its release, complete with all the features we wanted in the first one. This just made the first Battlefront feel like a demo in comparison to the promise of the new title, which is coming out this October. I spent over $100 on my demo. I won't fall into the hype-trap so easily again.

14 For Honor

The For Honor beta was great. It was like a whole new kind of game. It felt refreshing, exciting, and above all, extremely fun. My pre-order was in, was yours?

Fast forward to its release and suddenly the game feels extremely dull. It was repetitive, it was featureless, the campaign was terrible. The whole faction war concept failed epicly, the microtransactions were completely unfair—it felt like Ubisoft was just going for a cash grab and didn't care about the quality of their game at all. It only took a few short months for almost its entire player base to give up on it and I don't know a single person who still plays For Honor. I can't imagine what it'd be like to try to queue up a game today. Let's just hope they don't go for a sequel... I don't think anyone is going to hype that up.

13 The Division

Oh look, another Ubisoft disappointment. This time, in the form of their attempted MMO: The Division.

When The Division was announced, fans were over the moon. It looked like the first real next-gen video game. I define that as: it had amazing graphics, a totally new style of game-play, and its reliance on people to play online with their friends made it seem like the next logical step in console game development.

However, when The Division was finally released, the graphics were lackluster, the game-play was repetitive, and the player base had nearly abandoned it only a year or so after it had been on the market. The game was riddled with hackers and had a very featureless end-game. MMOs are supposed to keep players coming back for more for years, but The Division managed to just drive them away—even after it was hyped to the point of hysteria.

12 Knack

There's a lot of hype surrounding the PlayStation 4. The console has boasted some of the most amazing exclusives like Uncharted 4, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Bloodborne, to name a few. But one in particular was not so good, and unfortunately for Sony, it was the console's first exclusive—the first game shown to the public to prove the power of the PS4.

Knack proved the technical prowess of the PlayStation 4, but when it was released, it was destroyed by critics. The game was thought to have an interesting concept, but when it came to gameplay, it was said to have been terrible. The hype surrounding it and the Playstation 4 took a temporary nosedive, but luckily they've since bounced back. If Knack had never been made, would there even be a question of who wins the PS4 vs. Xbox One battle?

Now we've got Knack 2 to look forward to... don't understand why.

11 Battleborn

Oh, Battleborn. Let me first say that it's not your fault.

If you've never heard of Battleborn, there's a good reason why: it's because it was completely obliterated by a little game called Overwatch. They have a lot of things in common, and some might say they're "basically the same game," even, but Overwatch just did it better—and they were released within weeks of each other. People were definitely excited for Battleborn though, it was the newest release from the team behind Borderlands and it was supposed to build on the types of characters and environments you'd find in a Borderlands game. It was supposed to be a game that would define the MOBA genre.

Then Overwatch came along and crushed Battleborn's player base to almost nothing, forcing Battleborn to adopt a free-to-play model. It's kind of a sad story, but all's fair in love and games.

10 Duke Nukem Forever

Duke Nukem Forever was in development for fifteen years before its eventual release in 2011. Let me say that again: FIFTEEN YEARS. It is one of the most hyped games of all time.

Duke Nukem 3D is one of the most beloved Nintendo 64 titles, so when Duke Nukem Forever was announced in 1997, the sequel we'd wanted more desperately than anything, the fan base rejoiced. Fifteen years later, after experiencing development hell, the game finally came out... only to be disemboweled by critics and players alike. Its graphics were out-dated and inconsistent, its humor was offensive and unfunny, its gameplay was so poor that it felt like it never had fifteen years of thought put into it. It was a huge disappointment.

But come on, it's kind of a terrible idea to make sequels to games from the 90s without changing the formula at all. Times have changed, so should the game. This one, everyone can agree, should have never been made.

9 Civilization VI

While Civilization VI looks beautiful, has plenty of added features, and is the sequel to the insanely popular Civilization V... it just seems to be missing something to make it feel like a Civ game.

It's too cartoon-ish. It had way too many bugs on its release. The A.I. is terrible. At times it feels like a mobile game that's ripping off everything that made Civ V great. Now all the Civilization games are going to move in this direction and it's definitely a mistake. We're playing a world war simulator at the end of the day, it should be gritty and feel historical, not like some weird cel-shaded monstrosity where all of its A.I. characters won't stop having their own cut-scenes. You can't even skip the cut-scenes!

Here's to hoping that Civilization VII returns to its roots. I'd like to sink another 30 hours into a single game once more.

8 Batman: Arkham Knight

Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City are the greatest Batman games of all time, hands down. So the amount of hype surrounding Batman: Arkham Knight (though, they should switch up the title system at this point, jeez) was huge. This was going to be the ultimate Batman game: the Batman game to end all Batman games. Batman.

However, when Arkham Knight hit the shelves, a lot of fans were really disappointed. The beat-em-up combat system suddenly felt stale and overdone, the characters felt flat and uninteresting, and the stupid, forced Batmobile combat was... well, stupid and forced. Everything that made the other Batman titles so good was now completely over-baked and honestly, they probably just should have quit while they were ahead and never made Arkham Knight. Besides, the better, older Batman games still hold up just as well as when they were released and they're like five dollars now!

7 Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5 was the skateboarding video game nobody asked for. After the success of the Skate franchise, gamers thought the Tony Hawk series was dead in the water. Suddenly, out of nowhere, they announce a new entry in the series: a modern, sleeker, current gen version of the classic games we grew up with. People thought the Tony Hawk franchise was going to make its big comeback, after all those quiet years.

Nope. The game was terrible. On launch, it had so many bugs that many critics and gamers reported it as basically unplayable. It was stale, rehashed game play from a franchise of yesteryear. It died as quickly as it was hyped up. Here one day and gone the next. R.I.P Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. I don't think we're going to miss you, the old ones still hold up pretty well.

6 Mirror's Edge Catalyst

The original Mirror's Edge wasn't expected to be much. It was a brand new property, with brand new ideas, and no one could say for sure if it'd be successful or not. I mean, how cool can a sci-fi parkour game be?

Well, it was very cool. And very good. Mirror's Edge was loved by critics and was praised for having fresh gameplay and being extremely unique. One of its more popular critiques was that it was too short, so when Mirror's Edge Catalyst was finally announced, fans of the original were as hyped as they could be.

When the game finally came out, critics and fans responded with a collective "eh". The game turned out to be non-exciting, predictable, and had unlikable characters. The game's mechanics were still fun, but with a boring story behind them, Mirror's Edge Catalyst had nothing to offer. Like parkour itself, the original Mirror's Edge should have recognized it was just a trend and never needed a sequel.

5 Mass Effect Andromeda

The Mass Effect trilogy is one of the most lauded video game franchises of all time. Its attention to detail, its gripping stories, and its exciting combat mechanics all made it a must-play action RPG.

It's no surprise that Mass Effect Andromeda was the game we were all waiting for. Instead of trying to make the same game again, the developers of Mass Effect decided to do something different. They created new characters, new adventures, and purposely left out the ability to import saved data from previous games (a staple of the Mass Effect series) in order to give the series a fresh feel.

But unfortunately for fans of the series, Mass Effect Andromeda managed to somehow take a step back instead of a step forward. Nothing felt fresh, just unpolished. There was too much talking, the quests felt repetitive, and the character animations were so bad that the internet basically turned the game into a meme.

Maybe we'll see another Mass Effect game someday. When we do, Andromeda will be forgotten entirely... for good reason.

4 Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare

Every Call of Duty game is hyped to the point of ridiculousness. And while Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare's trailer managed to become second most disliked YouTube video of all time, the hype was still real. You know how I know? Because it still sold nearly two million copies in its first week.

Regardless of its YouTube mishap and its sales numbers, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare never should have been made. It was the Call of Duty no one asked for; the game was just a re-hash of old ideas and nothing new or exciting. People wanted something else, and when Battlefield 1 finally came out, it became apparent: fans wanted a return to form. They wanted more "boots on the ground" battles and a lot less jet-pack related hi-jinks.

Lucky for us, the Call of Duty developers listened and announced Call of Duty: WWII as their long awaited return to form. The one that should be made... not this one.

3 Fallout 4

It felt like we waited a century for Fallout 4. Bethesda fans had been busy for so long with Skyrim that we almost forgot about our favorite post-nuclear apocalypse franchise. Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas were both so good and so successful, we thought it'd be impossible for the entry in the series to be terrible. Oh boy were we wrong.

There is simply too much to do in Fallout 4. It is so wholly unfocused that it's basically unplayable. I do not care about my settlement. I do not care about all these random little side missions. Again, I do not care about my stupid settlement!

The Fallout series quickly turned from an action RPG with clever dialogue, intriguing characters, and a pulse-pounding story, into a first person shooter with next-to-nothing to offer in terms of innovation. At this point, out of fear that the same thing will happen to Oblivion, they should just not make the sequel to Skyrim.

2 No Man's Sky

No Man's Sky is often regarded as the most over-hyped and most disappointing game of all time. It was supposed to the next great game: one that would revolutionize the potential of video games as a whole, but it hardly made good on any of its promises.

The game promised in all its trailers a seamless integration of virtually endless planets, herds of interesting animals and species, and varying terrain and atmospheres. Instead we received very few animal species that didn't behave interestingly, the terrain from planet to planet all seemed similar, and the ability to travel seamlessly between planets was... not seamless at all.

Maybe we didn't understand the game at all. Maybe we invented a game in our heads from the trailers that never actually would exist. While we can blame the hype all we want, and there was plenty of hype, we can't ignore the fact  that the trailers didn't accurately depict the final game we played.

1 Grand Theft Auto V

Grand Theft Auto V should have never been made. Someone had to say it.

Sure, today's generation that's completely unfamiliar with the genius of the previous entries in the Grand Theft Auto series might disagree, but I firmly believe GTA V is the worst of the series. The big reason why is the online multiplayer. It's garbage. It's just people running around killing each other on flying motorcycles. It's people racing super-cars on colorful floating raceways in the sky. It's utter nonsense filled with toxic players, cheaters, and nothing fun for people over thirteen.

The worst part is, due to the "success" of the online multiplayer (combined with all the dirty microtransactions), Rockstar completely ignored any single player DLC for GTA V. All the GTA fans who want more story are being robbed of content, and the potential GTA V has is being squashed further and further every day.
