Over the last few years, indie games have become a lot more common and their quality has improved greatly. The once derided small studios are now showing the world exactly how talented they are and giving larger organizations a run for their money.

The rise of digital gaming means that indie games are now being given more exposure and a chance to shine. In this new digital marketplace, we've seen some superb games start to gain a following and now sequels are coming. With smaller titles, it can be harder to keep up with the news, as it can get lost in the crowd. However, don't worry because we've dug up some info about indie game sequels to look out for in 2020.

10 WindJammers 2

Windjammers is a disc throwing game that was originally released way back in 1994 by DotEmu. It was often seen in arcades and is a fast-paced face-off between two players. Now a sequel is coming to PC and Nintendo Switch sometime this year.

The new title is said to combine everything you loved about the original with new features, moves, mechanics and more. There is no current release date but DotEmu's website has a trailer and some screenshots to whet your appetite.

9 Spelunky 2

Spelunky is a critically-acclaimed 2D roguelike platformer that was released back in 2008 by Derek Yu and Mossmouth. It was remade in 2012/2013 for the seventh generation of consoles and also ported to Windows.

Now Blitworks, known for Don't Starve, Starbound and Wargroove, have partnered up with Mossmouth to produce Spelunky 2. While there is no current release date, Blitworks' website has the title listed as a current project and says it's coming soon. You can also watch a trailer and view some screenshots.

8 Little Nightmares 2

Fans of 2017's puzzle-platformer Little Nightmares will be excited to discover that Tarsier Studios, developers of the original, is producing a follow-up. The horror adventure crossover is a unique experience and the sequel looks set to be the same.

The studio has promised a new protagonist named Mono, as well as the return of Six. The game takes place in the same distorted reality as the original and includes fighting, sneaking and puzzling through a new part of the universe. Fans can also check out the trailer.

7 Cook, Serve, Delicious! 3?!

Just heading into early access, Vertigo Gaming Inc's Cook, Serve, Delicious! 3?! is another sequel to the hit cooking simulator and management game of the same name. This time there is a story-driven campaign to get your teeth into, alongside the much loved existing formula.

You can play the campaign alone or with a friend, taking to the road in a food truck, rather than settling in restaurants. This looks set to add a new dimension to the title and bring some new ideas to the well-designed base game.

6 Ori And The Will Of The Wisps

The sequel to Ori and The Blind Forest, Moon Studios Metroidvania sequel is already available but we didn't want to leave it off this list for anyone who may have missed it.

Players guide Ori further through the forest in a journey filled with platforming, puzzles a new adventure this enchanting story is a must for anyone who loved the original. You'll explore the world beyond Nibel to find out more about the lost ones and discover Ori's destiny.

5 Psychonauts 2

Back in 2005 Double Fine gave us Psychonauts, a crazy platformer about a group of international psychic secret agents. In 2015 a crowdfunding campaign for a sequel was launched and now we are finally about to see it, we hope.

The development team has already run into difficulties with the title, previously pushing the release date from 2018 to 2019 and now into 2020. The sequel is said to feature a new hub world as well as new characters, mysteries, and storylines.

4 Kerbal Space Program 2

The journey of this sequel for Kerbal Space Program is interesting. The original was developed by Squad, who were replaced by Star Theory games for this sequel. Since then publishers Private Division announced development was moving in-house to a newly-founded indie studio, focusing just on this project.

Despite the rocky journey, we've been promised that the title will still keep aspects of the original we all loved but will allow interstellar travel and new places to explore. It's said to be bigger and better, redesigned to ensure maximum enjoyment (and probably failures).

3 Axiom Verge 2

Axiom Verge is a Metroidvania released back in 2015 by Thomas Happ Games LLC. It was considered by fans to be a benchmark title for the genre. The side-scroller sees you control Trace, a scientist who wakes up in a high-tech world.

The sequel boasts a new protagonist called Indra and is said to take some story elements from the first game. However, the developers stress that there are new characters, powers, enemies and a whole new world to explore. The title is expected to be released late this year.

2 Hollow Knight: Silksong

Another Metroidvania, Hollow Knight was developed by Team Cherry back in 2017. The 2D action-adventure features a vast and immersive world players can freely explore. Its hand-drawn art gives it a unique feel.

The title's website shows that we can expect more of the same from Hollow Knight Silksong, something fans will no doubt be delighted about. Beautiful, haunting worlds, stunning artwork, brand new enemies and another Christopher Larkin soundtrack. We can't wait.

1 Super Meat Boy Forever

Super Meat Boy gained a following as a unique platformer as difficult as it is crazy. Playing as an animated cube of meat players had to navigate over 300 levels to save their girlfriend from a fetus in a jar. The game also featured a level editor.

Now all those who want more insanity can delight in the news that Super Meat Boy Forever may have been delayed but we can expect to see it soon. Meat Boy and Bandage girl must now rescue their baby, nugget, by punching, running and kicking their way through dynamically constructed levels increasing in difficulty.
