Alien is continuing its delve into the world of gaming with a brand-new Diablo-like title called Aliens: Dark Descent.

It's currently aiming for a 2023 release date, following on from Fireteam Elite and Isolation, taking Alien to an all-new genre that it hasn't yet explored in games.

Shown off at Summer Game Fest, Aliens: Dark Descent's newest trailer is mostly a cinematic deep dive into the story, showing a group of marines taking on a mass of Xenomorphs in a snowy facility. But we do get a snippet of the gameplay toward the end as seen in the trailer embedded below.

Aside from the top-down, Diablo-like gameplay, there's little else known. We aren't sure if it's co-op or squad-based yet, like Fireteam Elite, or a more single-player oriented approach.

It's evidently styled on Aliens rather than Alien, taking note from James Cameron's more action-focused sequel that upped the ante and had Ripley fighting far more aliens than the first film. Hence the name. Much like Terminator, it was a sequel that lessened the horror elements, but the nightmarish Xenomorphs still held a grip on audiences. It'll be interesting to see if that horror carries over into this new perspective and genre.

Whether you're an Alien or Aliens fan, you can dive into this world once more very soon as Aliens: Dark Descent is set to launch in 2023 for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, with no word on Nintendo Switch.
