Sony has been hard at work on the new Tempest 3D AudioTech system featured on PlayStation 5. Designed to "provide highly accurate audio positioning," the new technology is being heavily marketed as one of the key aspects of the next-gen console. However, according to a new blog post from Sony, you'll need a compatible headset in order to take advantage of it, as it is not yet functioning with built-in TV speakers.

"On the PS5, you'll be able to experience 3D Audio with the headphones that many of you already own, either through USB connection to the console, or by plugging your headphones into the DualSense wireless controller's 3.5mm headset jack," said Isabelle Tomatis, Senior Director at Sony. At launch, Tempest 3D AudioTech won't be supported by your standard TV speakers. Tomatis said that, "it's still a feature we are extremely excited about, and our engineers are hard at work on bringing it to the PS5 in the future."

While it's unfortunate that we won't be able to take advantage of the new technology without the use of headphones, it's nice that we aren't limited to only using Sony's first-party headphones. Its upcoming Pulse 3D wireless headset was completely designed around Tempest 3D AudioTech, but letting you don your own compatible headphones is a great way to expose more people to the bold new technology. Until it works with built-in TV speakers, it's definitely a nice touch that we don't have to buy another accessory after dropping hundreds of dollars on a PS5.

Some of the games that take advantage of the new technology include:

  • Marvel's Spider Man: Miles Morales
  • Gran Turismo 7
  • Returnal
  • Destruction AllStars
  • Demon's Souls
  • Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
  • Horizon Forbidden West
  • Resident Evil Village

Sony is really pushing the new audio tech, and we're excited to see how it performs next month when the PlayStation 5 finally hits the market. The PlayStation 5 releases on November 12 in select markets, with a worldwide release to follow on November 19.
