Everyone has a hero, and everyone has a story. Your favourite football star. That lead singer from that boy band whose face used to adorn every surface you owned. You owned every film they ever appeared in. That rare demo they recorded when they were twelve in their parents basement? You own it. You saved up all of your pay for six months at your retail job to own that overly priced jersey. And one day, perhaps many years after, you receive the opportunity to actually meet that idol. Sometimes its an official signing, other times its by chance. They're getting coffee as the same Starbucks as you, they're taking a jog down the street you work on! You get to see them as a tangible human being, and with this comes the double-edged sword of reality; the person you meet is a real jerk. You could possibly be receiving the blunt end of a career gone sour or a general existential angst to re-invent oneself from former child star status. If you've ever had an encounter with any of these 10 child stars from the 90s, you may be able to corroborate. If you haven't, well, you've been warned. But never fear! Within the jerk list you'll find 9 sweethearts who will ease your celebrity expectations. Maybe you can run into them at Starbucks instead?

Jerk: Macaulay Culkin

[caption id="attachment_135892" align="alignnone" width="1024"] via cnn.com[/caption] This Christmas staple movie child star caused a few fans to clap their hands against their cheeks when interactions with him felt a little more than filthy. While Culkin was known as a young man to be egotistic and standoffish, he is even more notorious now to express extreme jerkness. Many fans have shared instances when the star refused signing autographs during filming, talking on his phone and directly avoiding onlookers attempts at conversation. One fan in particular described an incident where Culkin denied signing an autograph after a performance for his band in 2014, despite no one noticing him standing alone around the bar. This supposedly upset another fan, who, while heavily inspired by alcohol intoxication, bellowed her complaints. Culkin also supposedly, 'egged her on.'

Sweetheart: Anna Paquin

[caption id="attachment_135074" align="alignnone" width="829"] via true-blood.net[/caption]

The actress predominantly known for her role on True Blood began her career acting in The Piano at the age of 11, earning her an academy award for performance in 1993. Anna is another 90s star who is not afraid to speak out about her sexuality, schooling Larry King during an interview about the nature of sexuality and the fluidity of her own bisexuality. More recently, she backed up her costar Ellen Page's accusations about Brett Ratner for being blatantly homophobic, adding herself to the accumulating amount of women who are standing up against harassment and unequal treatment at their place of work. Women must support women and this is a notion that Paquin has no problem emphasizing to the general public.

Jerk: Lindsay Lohan

[caption id="attachment_135625" align="alignnone" width="1000"] via dailymotion.com[/caption]

Ever since her childhood successful role as twins separated at birth, Lohan has been a constant source of celebrity gossip. Growing up in the spotlight and blasting through her partying 20s, substances and alcohol were not kind to Lohan, with multiple bouts in rehab centres and negative encounters with the paparazzi. She earned her Mean Girl title during many tirades on Twitter and Instagram, telling Ariana Grande she was wearing 'too much makeup', even displaying public arguments back and forth with her dad. To top it off, Lohan proudly defended Harvey Weinstein during his initial accusations (and since a plethora more have come forward with disturbing details about further abuse)and came to Donald Trump's aid when she believed other Americans were 'bullying' him. Yuck.

Sweetheart: Alicia Silverstone

[caption id="attachment_135075" align="alignnone" width="1024"] via girlschannel.net[/caption]

The Clueless star is far from clueless; in fact, she is inspiring many with her new and fresh perspective on life. Silverstone runs a website titled The Kind Life: articles written about approaches to diet, health, efforts toward living a more green life, animal treatment and tales of motherhood are shared between women searching for a new beginning. Silverstone seems dedicated toward making this earth a more decent and kind place to live and thrive in, which instantly deems her one of the sweetest 90s stars there is. Silverstone was also one of the first celebrities in the 90s to become vegan, which further spurred her into activist action in the name of the diminishing environment and treatment of the animals she has always claimed to love.

7 Jerk: Mary-Kate Olsen

[caption id="attachment_135033" align="alignnone" width="1024"] via closemag.fr[/caption] This Full House star, along with her sister, received world renowned fame for their adorable and sarcastic remarks. The cast and crew were known to be very right-knit. However, when Mary-Kate became engaged to longtime boyfriend Oliver Sarkozy, they left a key member off their invite list; Bob Saget, who acted as the girls' on-screen Father. Though the actor expressed zero hostility toward his former cast mate, the move seemed odd and inconsiderate. The twins have also further been contacted consistently to make a cameo appearance on a follow up series to the  same television series that made them famous, but reacted in a strange and yet another inconsiderate fashion. Rude.

Sweetheart: Joesph Gordon Levitt

[caption id="attachment_135069" align="alignnone" width="995"] via desktopbackround.org[/caption] The Third Rock From the Sun star has a variety of stories from fans who confirm his state of being a sweetheart. From random coffee shop conversations to high-fiving fans on airplanes, Levitt appears to be as cool a guy as the one strutting around the streets in 500 Days of Summer. He has been noted by some fans as somewhat 'mean' for not signing autographs, but his reasoning ultimately validates him; he views his celebrity status as not being as meaningful as people who go to the moon, or doctors who save lives. His collaborations with fans around the world for his HitRecord project cements him as an artists who simply wants to know other artists, even those who are not as famous as him.

Jerk: Ashley Olsen

[caption id="attachment_135034" align="alignnone" width="1024"] via twitter.com[/caption]

Next on the list is the above's twin sister, who is also joins her duplicate on the jerk list. In more of a shared jerk moment, the duo reportedly never returned the phone calls of Fuller House creator Jeff Franklin when he inquired on multiple occasions for them to make a cameo appearance when the show returned on Netflix last year. We can understand not wanting to go the far back in your acting career, or perhaps appear as a desperate reach to cling onto the role that burned your name into the stars eternal, but even a blunt 'no' is better than silence. Their absence in the series was noticed by viewers and fans of the original show. Not cool.

6 Sweetheart: Mara Wilson

She's not Matilda anymore, but she's just as sweet. Actress Mara Wilson was known for her charming demeanour in the movies Mrs. Doubtfire and the cult classic Matilda. However, Mara quickly noticed the shift in attention that occurred once she passed through puberty; the disturbing sexualization of young female actresses. Mara penned a passionately empowering essay for Elle after feeling triggered over the inappropriate comments Stranger Things star Millie Bobbie Brown had received by the hand of anonymous strangers on Twitter. Her honesty in reference to her own experience growing up as a child star who was quickly objectified opens the door for a conversation about what is deemed appropriate and not appropriate in our society. Comfort, connection? That is sweet.

5 Jerk: Brian Bonsall

This actor received prominent fame during the seven year stint of a little known television series Family Ties. He also starred in the 1994 Disney film Blank Check, grossing over $30 million in theatre ticket sales. Ever since Brian Bonsall moved away from LA, so did his acting career, so he morphed himself into a musician, joining bands called Late Bloomers and later Thrusters. The leap appeared to be an attempt to separate himself from the innocent image that presented itself upon the screen of the blonde and blue-eyed bundle of joy. However, his jerkiness revealed itself after getting caught drunk driving and a 2007 arrest for hurting his girlfriend. There's nothing that personifies jerkiness more than domestic violence.

4 Sweetheart: Drew Barrymore

Little Drew Barrymore captured our hearts in the 90s hit E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial with her sweet comedic relief. There has always been something about that face that screams 'love me', and Drew, we have. According to a fan in 2011, who had received notice that her dog had just been hit by a car, they were crying in a bathroom in a cafe when Barrymore reportedly heard her weeping and consoled her. After buying her a chai latte, the actress gave her a hug and told her she would be okay. Well, it definitely entirely fix a terrible situation for that poor fan, it definitely made those difficult moments a little bit easier to bear.

3  Jerk: Raven-Symoné

Beloved Cosby Show and Disney star, Raven Symone captured the attention of viewers with her cuteness as a child and wit as a teenager. Young girls idolized her, especially young Black girls searching for a place in the predominately white saturated media and television shows. But that idolization quickly rushed downhill when Raven renounced her ancestry in an interview with Oprah Winfrey, claiming not to be African American but “just American.” That same year, as host for the talk show The View in 2015, Raven ranted about how she would refused to hire anyone with a 'black name' like “Watermelondrea.” Her rejection of her own race has led to an extreme backlash in the African-American community, disappointingly stating that her platform was only fuelling the already deeply ingrained racism in the United States.

2 Sweetheart: Ben Savage

Sweet and innocent Cory Matthews seems to be a reflection of Ben Savage, as many fans and interviewers have claimed. In the revitalization of the hit series Boy Meets World, Savage made the effort to reach out to all of the same cast and crew to film Girl Meets World, primarily focusing on the trials and tribulations of a female teenager. The original series Boy Meets World lasted for seven seasons, while Girl Meets World was cancelled only after three last year. Though its presence was brief, it showed the dedication of writers willing to follow a single path of what leads to a television show brave enough to discuss the trials and tribulations associated with being a teenager.

1 Jerk: Sarah Michelle Gellar

The actress from the highly successful teen obsession Buffy the Vampire Slayer reportedly began hating the program that made her famous during the filming of the third of seven seasons. Not only was Gellar difficult to work with, but apparently systematically 'got rid' of her former husband Freddie Prince Jr.'s friends after their 2002 wedding. Gellar also did not show up for the TV show's final wrap party. This was supposedly due to Gellar's seething hatred of the series that made her a universal name after season three and she performed her duties as the badass Buffy with deep reluctance and resentment toward the writers, cast, and crew.

Sweetheart: Dante Basco

[caption id="attachment_136141" align="alignnone" width="1000"] via alchetron.com[/caption] The leader from of the Lost Boys from the 1991 Robin Williams film Hook loves talking to fans and sharing stories with them. Basco has attended Sac Anime twice a year in Sacramento, California, a convention focusing on anime stars. Every time he attends, his panels have been raved about as being open, funny, and genuine. Photos of him with fans show a man who is having the time of his life, and who appreciates the people around him who got him there. While it's impossible for us to expect every celebrity to give us every moment of their time, it's nice when someone with fame attached to their name gives fans the time of day at conventions.

Jerk: Kel Mitchell

[caption id="attachment_135077" align="alignnone" width="1024"] via mentalfloss.com[/caption] Kel, the counterpart to Kenan Thompson in the 90s hit show, played the orange soda loving best friend. The show reached the epitome of its popularity during the 90s along withe pair's playful accompanying film Good Burger. One fan wanted to express this adoration one night in a bar, but was told to go away (in a much more vulgar fashion) when he quoted the series most favourite lines. We understand that celeb's need their space too, but there's the right way to do things and we can't say Kel did that this time. I suppose he didn't get his Good Burger that night.

Sweetheart: Haley Joel Osment

[caption id="attachment_135064" align="alignnone" width="1024"] via twitter.com[/caption] I see a sweetheart! The M. Night Shyamalan flick star took advantage of his fame and well known to help those less fortunate out. In 2016, Haley Joel Osment took part in the Big Slick charity softball event in Kansas City, a series of events that raise money for local Children's Mercy Hospital. Osment is seen colouring with some of the patients, laughing and hitting a few balls with playful vigour. Though his career hasn't reached the heights they had when he was a child star, he's still giving back and we gotta say that we really appreciate it. He really knows how to Pay it Forward. Get it? Like the movie? We'll stop.

 Jerk: Jaleel White

[caption id="attachment_135056" align="alignnone" width="1024"] via pinterest.com[/caption] Did he do that? The Family Matters child star made his name playing an awkward squeaky voice teenager, but in an attempt to climb further into the spotlight during adulthood, Jaleel White joined the hit TV series know most for nostalgic recollections of the days of television yore, Dancing With the Stars in 2012. During a rehearsal, White accidentally stepped on the foot of dancer Kym Johnson, who exclaimed a subtle “ouch.” This was apparently too much of a reaction for White to cope with, as he flew into a rage, accusing her of being a 'baby' and reducing her to tears. Definitely not how Urkel would have reacted.

Sweetheart: Leonardo DiCaprio

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="1024"] via youtube.com[/caption] It's kind of difficult to call anyone who stands up for animal rights and personally donates funds to aid in building awareness of global warming anything but a sweetheart. This sweetheart in particular began his acting career at a young age, appearing in sitcoms like Growing Pains. His film work affirmed his status as a skilled actor and were exemplified in What's Eating Gilbert Grape and Titanic. Not only is he distinctly known as being kind to fans, DiCaprio has made a permanent mark on the world of with philanthropy, contributing $1 million dollars to relief efforts in Haiti after the earthquake and $61,000 to support the visibility of LGBTQI rights in the media, to name a few. You go Leo.

Jerk: Edward Furlong

[caption id="attachment_135059" align="alignnone" width="676"] via youtube.com[/caption] The young boy that acted alongside a robotic Arnold Schwarzenegger with the shaggy Nick Carter hair did not cope with fame well. The success of The Terminator 2: Judgement Day and American History X shoved him into the deep underbelly of substance abuse, along with a DUI and domestic assault charges filed by his former wife Rachael Bella in 2009. Since those two hit movies and important roles, we haven't seen Edward Furlong in much that's been successful, as he seems to be a fixture on DVDs that went straight to the shelves rather than the theater. At this point, we think it's pretty safe to say that he won't be back. It's the last entry, so it's the last bad movie pun we've got. You're welcome!
