Everyone has their own sense of style, and that has bled over into video games. Some people prefer the keyboard and mouse setup that a PC offers, while others would much rather the comfortable matte finish of the Xbox One controller. Then there are the aliens that favor the N64 controllers. Whatever your preference is, there's something out there for you.

What if you find the console and controller you like, but aren't satisfied with how it looks or feels? Well, if you're like most of us, you probably won't worry about it until some better controller comes out. If you're like some other people, you'll take matters into your own hands and design something better suited for you.

Several gamers of the world have done this and slowly created devices that look like they belong in a house of horrors. Others prefer to modify their current controllers cosmetically to make them much more pleasing. When designing your own setup, the sky is the limit, as you'll find out soon enough.

If you're into custom controllers or designing your own environment, you'll be interested to see what these 10 terrible custom controllers and 10 amazing ones have to offer.

20 A Weapon Of Mass Destruction (Yes!)

via gamerant.com

God of War will be a staple of the PlayStation consoles until it goes out of style. However, if this controller is anything to go by, it never will. We've seen plenty of God of War consoles and controllers, but most of them sport a few logos and are a sleek red. This PS4 controller takes it to a whole new level.

The standout part is the logo right on the touchpad. Then, the buttons are robbed of their symbols in favor of a more damaged look. Some cloth is added on the left handle for a little bit of pop, and the entire thing is colored like Kratos himself. Any fan of the franchise will go nuts at the sight of this controller.

19 Blow On It For Operation (Ugh!)

via gamesgrabr.com

We all have old game junk lying around our houses. Instead of having it collect dust or selling it to a shady shop owner, what if we decided to repurpose it for other ventures? Take this design, for example. Someone took an old N64 cartridge and thought that it would make for an excellent controller.

It's extremely inception-like; the N64 cartridge controller is designed with N64 buttons to play N64 games. Try not to think about it too much. Clearly, it's not ergonomic in any way, and the idea of tearing up an old N64 game hurts our hearts. If we were given a choice, we wouldn't choose this controller.

18 Gaming In A Different Era (Yes!)

via gamesgrabr.com

You might wonder what video games would've looked like if brought into a different time period, but with brilliant modders on the scene, we don't have to anymore. Take a look at this slick Xbox 360 controller that's designed to look like something that came from a Steampunk novel.

Off the bat, it's amazing to see a controller take the appearance of bronze. As if that weren't cool enough, a lock is placed where the logo usually is, complete with a key in the bottom right corner of the controller. The work done to the buttons was also genius, making everything tie together nicely without breaking the theme of the artwork.

17 Playing On A Postage Stamp (Ugh!)

via learn.adafruit.com

With all of the advancements that have been made in technology, it's extremely easy to build your own controller (easier than it used to be, that is). Furthermore, with all of the consoles out on the market, more people are looking to third-party alternatives to hook up their devices with multiple systems as opposed to only relying on a single source.

That's where controllers like this tiny one come in. It's very simple and harkens back to a time when the NES was big, but it will more than get the job done. It will probably only function well with 2D sidescrollers and mobile games, which makes it less impressive in our minds. If it were compatible with other games, we'd be able to justify having such a small gamepad, but as it stands, it's probably best to use something else.

16 Another Steampunk Design (Yes!)

via: gamesgrabr.com

You might be upset that we selected another steampunk design for this list, but it's different and excellent enough that it deserves a mention here. Just one look at this controller and your eye is immediately drawn to it. The neon blue against the subtle cloth and metal is a showstopper.

Modding the Xbox One controller already takes some time, but to cut the outer shell and line it with cloth is almost insane. Nonetheless, it's amazingly pulled off here, and even has metal stitching to connect it all together. Like all well-altered Xbox controllers, it has a different insignia over the Xbox logo and we love every inch of it.

15 Coping With That Red Ring Of Death (Ugh!)

via geek.com

The Xbox 360 was a pretty big console, but with the rise of modern hardware, you've probably got a dead one lying around. It's not worth anything on the market, so what do you do with it? Well, one of the ideas is to repurpose it as a new controller itself.

Thankfully, they didn't gut the console to try and make it a controller you hold in your hand. Instead, it functions as a joystick and button setup that is more fitting to an arcade game. While it definitely took some ingenuity, it seems like a setup that would be extremely flimsy in actuality. We have a hard time imagining where this would work.

14 For The Crazier Parties (Yes!)

via diyalready.com

Do you like alcohol? Do you like parties? If so, you might just end up with a massive controller like this one. This dual-player arcade setup was constructed using old beer kegs (say what you will about people who party, you can't argue recycling that's this effective).

We can easily imagine parties in the garage where you hook up Street Fighter II and have people sit down at the base of this table. It's fairly simple, but it gets the job done and is a testament to how creative people can be when they have the right amount of time and resources at their disposal. Many times, not a lot of money is needed to create controllers, and this is just proof of that.

13 Getting More Out Of Your JoyCon (Ugh!)

via engadget.com

When Nintendo unveiled their new Switch console, a lot of people were mesmerized by having two-player co-op available from the start. However, in order to effectively support that, there had to be some tradeoffs. One of them was that, in place of a proper D-pad, the left joycon instead has a set of four buttons like the right side.

While this is fine for what it is, some people were bothered enough to create their own alternatives with 3D printing. That being said, that's a lot of effort to go to for simply a replacement of the directional face buttons. Where it stands now, the Joycons are just fine, and having an actually D-pad doesn't change the function of the controllers very much.

12 How To Use Your Dragon (Yes!)

via: funstockretro.com

Sometimes people take inspiration from games and other eras when designing their custom controllers. Others just take a concept and roll with it. Case in point: this dragon Xbox One controller. Right away, you can tell that there's a lot going on with this design, but we'll be darned if it isn't pretty to look at.

It's clear that some serious modifications were made cosmetically to create this bad boy. Not only is the controller itself riddled with various scales, claws, and wings, but the head rises from the center of the device as well. While it might be hard to wield, we still have to praise this device for how excellent it looks.

11 HD Rumble 2.0? (Ugh!)

via theverge.com

Apparently, the gaming industry is moving in a direction where there is more noticeable feedback on the rumble setup. Between the HD rumble in the Switch and now this new controller, we're all but convinced. Mostly.

What is exactly is this device, you ask? Well, it's a skin stretch game controller. Apart from having a more clothy look to it, the thumbsticks are equipped with some unique technology. As opposed to just vibrating during certain events, it will actually lightly stretch the skin on your thumbs to provide deeper feedback. While that's cool and all, it's clear the controller was built around this one concept. Everything else seems to be an afterthought, and that's why we can't recommend it.

10 Gamers Assemble (Yes!)

via gamesgrabr.com

"Wow" is the first word that comes to mind when we see this PS4 controller. There have been a few attempts to make an Iron Man-inspired game controller, but when placed next to this one, there is a clear winner in the bunch.

The metallic finish of the red and gold paint perfectly captures everything the Iron Man suit is about, but it's taken a step further. You may have noticed that the thumbsticks light up with the light blue that is so essential to the character's armor. The only thing that would make this even better is if it made the repulsor sound when it was turned on. This might not be completely custom, but it's not something you'll just see anywhere, so we don't care!

9 Night Of The Living Xbox (Ugh!)

via slashgear.com

The Xbox 360 controller was an expertly designed piece of equipment. The people of Microsoft knew exactly what they were doing when they put it together and created something that would last for generations. However, it's not well-suited for every type of game, especially Virtual On.

One person was so bothered that they altered their Xbox 360 controller to be better suited for it. Having massive joysticks that come out of it with different button placement, the game can now be better played. Unfortunately, whoever designed this is now lacking a proper Xbox controller, and will have to wake up to this horrid nightmare every morning. We're all for mods, but this is one piece of work that we wouldn't do.

8 One-Handed Keyboard (Yes!)

via youtube.com (meanman1992)

If you're a PC gamer, you may have run into the problem that there's an entire keyboard in your way. While that won't bother most people, it has motivated some to find alternative methods of having a controller. One YouTuber by the name of meanman1992 has taken action and designed his own Gamepad.

Taking the right side of a keyboard as well as some pads for his feet, he has put together a completely custom game setup. What's even better is that he has a video on how to make one for yourself. If you're interested, we recommend you check it out to have a different interpretation on a classic control scheme.

7 Prototype JoyCon (Ugh!)

via blog.pricecharting.com

Many times, when a game company comes out with a new gimmick or type of control scheme, it's not entirely new. Many companies experiment with similar ideas for someone is brave enough to mass produce and ship it out to the public. Take this controller design from SEGA for instance. This might not be custom, really, but it's awful enough that it belongs here.

The focus of it was primarily to cater to the left-handed gamers of the world. By being able to detach the controller and switch its orientation, it would've allowed for more versatility. We'd like to assume that they could've been used independently, but it was designed at a time when corded controllers were the only way to go. Because of this, we have to knock off some point, and in the end, we're glad that it was only a prototype and never fully released.

6 Another GameBoy Micro (Yes!)

via blog.adafruit.com

If you're a techie, you've probably heard of the Raspberry Pi. It's a little computer that can be used for a variety of things. Most people boot up emulator software onto it and turn it into a processor of games of multiple different consoles and generations.

You could use it to just plug into your TV, but with such busy schedules, we need something a bit more portable. Enter this 3D-printed case for the Pi. When properly put together, it plays all of the games on the system (from PS1 to Genesis) on that little screen. Just imagine playing through Sonic, Spyro, and Pokémon all on the same handheld.

5 A Controller Without Honor (Ugh!)

via gamesgrabr.com

Dishonored is a very stylistic game. Taking the role of a thief as your parkour your way to your next victim, there's a lot to love there. However, you won't truly experience the game's presentation unless you're sitting down with this controller in your hands.

If we could give this controller a name, it would be "edgelord." This PS4 controller was restructured to look like a heavy metal song was ripped out of the radio. With heavy modifications to the buttons and cosmetics, you can barely tell what's going on. We'd also bet a lot of money that this design is more painful to hold than it is to look at. It looks like a murder weapon.

4 In A Galaxy Far Away (Yes!)

via pinterest.com

Star Wars is an ever-present aspect of pop culture. Due to the revival of the franchise after Disney took over, it seems that the franchise will never die out, and we can always rely on various merchandise to whet our appetites for lightsabers and Wookies. It's not hard to imagine that some people would take inspiration from this franchise when designing their own game controllers.

While there have been official Star Wars Xbox One controllers, none of them look quite as good as this X-Wing-inspired design. All of the colors are on point, but it goes a step further by placing in different buttons, having straps around the handles, and making it look like it's been through the thick of battle.

3 A Little Bit Of Help (Ugh!)

via picturesify.com

Have you ever wondered to yourself "Man I wish I could more accurately play Angry Birds"? Us neither. Still, whether we asked for it or not, some smart people came up with the idea for a more accurate control scheme for the outdated mobile game Angry Birds.

Instead of providing better feedback on the touchscreen, they designed their own controller for the task. Having a stand where a little bird sits, you can then pull it back and fling it to accurately represent what you're doing in the game. All in all, there's not much use for a controller like this. After all, Angry Birds is an outdated game at this point, and having an entire peripheral for a smartphone app isn't the smartest investment. We have to, unfortunately, give this device thumbs down.

2 Exercise That Second Amendment (Yes!)

via en.modmag.net

Shooter games have been popular ever since Bungie created Halo and Activision has been pumping out their annual Call of Duty game. While controllers and keyboard/mouse work well, they never quite replicate the feeling of actually being a soldier. Wonder no more, though, because we have the most 'Merican game controller ever created.

This impressive piece of tech is designed to be a controller that also confirms your masculinity (or confirm some sort of political view). With the buttons on the sides and triggers of the controller, you can actually feel like a shooter when playing an FPS game.

1 Hyrule In A New World (Ugh!)

via gamesgrabr.com

While you'll hear people rip on Nintendo for one reason or another, there are still plenty of fans of their games that play other consoles. Take this PS4 owner, for example. Clearly, he was a huge fan of The Legend of Zelda, and decided to express that on one of his controllers.

Instead of going for a specific incarnation, the controller sports a design that is recognizable throughout the entire series. The forest green contrasting with the brown leather around the handles is a nice touch, but it's not all rainbows and sunshine. The Hylian Shield design is a little primitive and the green doesn't look all that great when compared to the drab face buttons.
