We've seen plenty of games venture out beyond their original genre to offer new kinds of play experiences. Whether it's Halo adopting a top-down shooter style in Spartan Assault, or Fallout abandoning an isometric view in favor of a 1st person shooter design, there's proof that our favorite franchises have plenty of room to experiment.

Today we're counting down 10 action games that could easily be converted into strategy titles. Read on to find out which ones made our list!

10 DEAD SPACE

This 3D person survival horror series is renowned for its ultra-frightening and claustrophobic play style, but there's a great strategy game in there, as well.

Our take on a Dead Space strategy game would undoubtedly be an RTS, so as not to lose the sense of dread and panic as hordes of necromorphs rush your position. We envision the ability to form military units with different specializations that can be controlled in a real-time environment, in order to set up flanking positions and crossfires. We'd probably lean less on tech trees, and more on battle strategy.

9 BORDERLANDS

We all know Borderlands for its zany, comical 1st person shooter mechanics and an (over) abundance of guns, guns and more guns. With so much content including varied enemy types and locales at the ready, why not take things into the strategy sphere?

A Borderlands RTS would be phenomenal! A cash reward system could allow players to unlock higher-tier weapons from Marcus Munitions between each level, while a straightforward research system could focus on character ability upgrades. Borderlands maps are already well thought out. Imagine flipping them top-down, and it's easy to see a strategy game rich with primary and secondary objectives to complete.

8 DEAD RISING

We'd probably approach a Dead Rising strategy game the same as we would Dead Space - in RTS form. You wouldn't want to lose the momentum of the game; neither would you want to limit the play experience.

Dead Rising could adopt strategy mechanics in the form of real-time barricade building to stem the flow of undead attacks, while preparing for your next move. A point and click system could make it easy to interact with the surrounding environment to destroy large swathes of zombies at once, just like the original.

7 DOOM

We're not entirely sure if we'd go Classic DOOM or New DOOM for a strategy installment, but we'd definitely choose a turn-based approach here, similar to Final Fantasy Tactics. On its face, that might seem to counter the fast-paced gameplay of the DOOM games, but hear us out.

A DOOM strategy game could feature battles against waves of enemies guarding a specific objective, such as a demon portal, or it could involve defensive missions where you must keep your team of marines alive while civilians are extracted. We'd probably amp up the focus on strategic placement of units to provide a more challenging style of play.

6 THE ELDER SCROLLS

While it's fun to explore Tamriel's decrepit ruins, cities and mountain peaks, we'd gladly give a strategy iteration a go. After all, it's not hard to envision a turn-based Elder Scrolls strategy title featuring warriors, archers and mages battling hordes of bandits, draugr and dragons, is it?

A turn-based mechanism would give an Elder Scrolls strategy game some room to plan out unit formations, weapons and armor, and skill points. However, we're not opposed to the idea of taking an RTS route either, a la Lord Of The Rings: Battle For Middle Earth. Whatever the case, an Elder Scrolls strategy game is anything from far-fetched. In fact, it's downright obvious!

5 MASS EFFECT

We envision a Mass Effect strategy game taking place in outer space, with a play style similar to that of the Homeworld games. The ability to assign and control groups of ships during intergalactic battles in 3D space is a welcome one, especially where Mass Effect is concerned!

The game could take cues from the First Contact War, and manage to weave an intricate story about that conflict's greatest battles. DLC content could come in the form of space battles that might have taken place during the Mass Effect trilogy, including the campaign against the Reapers. Get Lance Henriksen on board to reprise his role as Admiral Hackett, and this is one strategy game that practically screams for release!

4 SNIPER ELITE

It's hard to imagine Sniper Elite as anything but a 3D person vehicle for down-the-scope gore-kills and stealth-based gameplay. None of that needs to go if the game adopted a strategy format, however.

In contrast to most RTS games that focus on a war of attrition, we could easily see Sniper Elite taking a slower approach, with several snipers supporting military units trying to advance through enemy territory. The same alert mechanics could play a role here, forcing you to re-locate your sniper units accordingly, while keeping your regular units hidden. The stealth aspect of the game could definitely serve up a white-knuckled experience where patience wins the day.

3 WOLFENSTEIN

As with DOOM, a strategy version of Wolfenstein could go a long way to giving players a fresh new perspective on the franchise. We'd most certainly adopt the same visual and storytelling style of The New Order and The New Colossus, and focus on a separate storyline based on existing canon.

We think an RTS format would suit Wolfenstein better than a turn-based one, with B.J. Blazkowicz leading the charge as just one of several supporting characters from the franchise. We'd probably focus on a three person unit load-out with smaller environments that gradually lead up to larger and more climatic battles.

2 STAR WARS: BATTLEFRONT

Star Wars already has several strategy-based titles under its belt, but we'd turn our focus specifically towards the Battlefront games, but with a twist. Instead of making it a single-player campaign experience, we'd maintain the same online approach, while allowing multiple players to compete in teams against one another.

The actual execution of this format could be rather tricky, but it'd certainly be worth the effort to be able to compete in deathmatch modes with friends, or form clans for tournament play. By working in teams under an RTS landscape, we can only imagine the strategy, ingenuity and incredible victories that would follow!

1 TITANFALL

Now here's a game that would make for a great turn-based strategy title! Titanfall's focus on dual-play mechanics could come in handy for a strategy title. We envision the ability to spend a turn hopping out of your Titan to spice up your tactics and catch your opponents off guard by giving them more than one target to think about.

Broaden this concept out a bit, and imagine forming a unit of various Titan types with their own weapon load-outs. Next, try to imagine multiple game modes, from attrition, to capture the flag and a full story campaign. It worked for Front Mission, and it can definitely work for Titanfall!
