There’s a Magic: The Gathering tournament happening in Alabama where the top prize gets a Ford Mustang GT.
The biggest Magic tournaments in the land can net a player quite the windfall. Winning the Pro Tour claims a top prize of $50,000, but even coming in the top 5 will get you between $10,000 and $20,000. Smaller, store-only tournaments usually have top prizes measured in the mere hundreds, or more often than not, store credit towards more Magic: The Gathering cards.
But there’s a place in Alabama giving away a car.
At Gamers N Geeks in Mobile, Alabama, a tournament will be held on Saturday, June 15th. The top prize for winning that tournament is a 2005 Ford Mustang GT.
Now, 2005 was a long time ago, and the Facebook page detailing the tournament didn’t provide the car’s approximate value or how many miles it has on the odometer. However, Kelley Blue Book puts the value of a 2005 Mustang GT anywhere from $5,000 to $20,000, depending on the condition of the car.
This particular Mustang has been given some love over the years in the form of aftermarket wheels, a new exhaust, and a cold air intake, so it’s value is probably closer to $20k than $5k.
The tournament format will be Modern, which means a 60-card deck, 15-card sideboard, and every set from now until Mirrodin is legal (with a few notable banned cards, such as Skullclamp, Sensei’s Divining Top, and Cloudpost).
For the prize of a new (well, used) car, expect players to bring their A game.
Even getting second place is still a pretty big win. Taking home second will give the runner-up a box each of Modern Masters 2013, Modern Masters 2015, Modern Masters 2017, Eternal Masters, Iconic Masters, Masters 25, and Ultimate Masters, while third place takes home four boxes of Modern Horizons.
Entry is $50 at the door, or you can pre-register to only pay $45. There will be side tournaments going on all weekend too, so this will be a pretty big event. If you’re a Magic player in the area, you should definitely check this out.
