Alien: Isolation locks the player, who controls Amanda Ripley, within a gigantic space station where a Xenomorph is killing people. In a weird way, this is an Alien fan's fantasy. Now they get to experience the dread and constant thrill of a loose Xenomorph from the safety of their couches while playing one of the hardest horror games out there.

This game went a long way in getting the atmosphere just right. From the old-looking monitors and the past concept of futuristic tech to sudden gory deaths in the hands of an intimidating, stealthy alien. The game went beyond and made the player feel powerless in front of this apex predator. It provides guns that do not work well against the creature and forces players to hide and hold their breath in order to avoid an instant kill.

10 Flashbang

Alien Isolation - Flashbang being used on the Xenomorph

The Flashbang is one of the custom-made, improvised weapons that is used by Amanda Ripley in Alien: Isolation. It seems that this weapon works by having the bond agent be heated up by the blasting cap. This most likely causes a chemical reaction that ends up in a blinding explosion.

Although this is a weapon that has some utility, that's all that it is. The Flashbang is a complimentary item that still demands the player to use actual weapons to finish the job. Besides, it is completely ineffective against the Xenomorph.

9 EMP Mine

Alien Isolation - EMP Bomb used on a xenomorph

The EMP mine is an improvised electromagnetic pulse grenade/mine that has very limited use in Alien: Isolation. It can be made from charge packs, sensors, an SCJ Injector, scraps, and bonding agents. As an improvised weapon, it has its uses, however, this weapon is anything but fantastic.

The greatest use of the EMP mine is to stun Working Joes. This might give the player some time to bash the synthetics with a melee weapon right after. This weapon does not do any harm to the Xenomorph.

8 Maintenance Jack

Alien Isolation - Maintenance Jack being found

There is not special about this tool. The Maintenance Jack was manufactured by the European Conglomerate Seegson. It is mostly used to remove security braces from closed doors of Sevastopol. It can also be used in order to divert power inside any electrical junction of the station, it seems.

The Maintenance Jack can be used by Amanda as a melee weapon. While there might be moments when this is the only choice the player has, any other weapon would be more effective than the Maintenance Jack.

7 Stun Baton

Alien Isolation - Stun Baton being found

When not looking for a lot of damage but an effective, tactical weapon, the Stun Baton might just get the job done. This baton is an electroshock weapon that was manufactured by Generic Electric. It converts power from its lithium battery power pack and turns into an electric discharge that runs through the whole baton except its handle.

The Stun Baton causes an extremely painful electric shock that can take down humans and temporarily stun Working Joes. However, this weapon is completely ineffective against the Xenomorph.

6 Revolver

Alien Isolation - Revolver being found

The Spearhead Armoury .357 Revolver is a lot like your usual .38 gun with a few futuristic twists. It is a semi-automatic revolver that can carry six rounds. It is the weapon of choice for the Office of the Colonial Marshals in the 2130s. It is the first gun that the player can find and it is a fairly decent weapon against humans and synthetics.

This weapon is completely useless when aimed directly at the Alien. A direct hit will make the Xenomorph bleed acid but will not slow it down at all. The only reason one should pull this gun when the Alien appears is to shoot propane tanks. A close enough explosion will make the Xenomorph retreat, which might be key to survive certain difficulties.

5 Bolt Gun

Alien Isolation - Boltgun being found

This improvised 1-round chambered weapon is amazing against working joes and humans. The Bolt Gun is a sluggish pneumatically-powered weapon that requires a few seconds to charge before firing. However, those bolts that come out of this gun can take down any humanoid enemy in the game with a single headshot.

Although it might be an amazing weapon against most enemies in the game, the one that counts is not hurt by it. This gun can temporarily stun the Xenomorph, but the time it takes to load will most likely cause the player's death before a bolt is shot. This situation of having a good weapon and not being able to constantly use it is one of the things in this game that makes you feel like you are in a horror movie.

4 Shotgun

Alien Isolation - Shotgun being found

The Henjin-Garcia Model 37-12 Gauge Pump Action, generally called the 27-12, is a pump-action shotgun that can carry 4-rounds of 12 gauge ammunition in it. It has a 4-round dual underbarrel internal tube magazine feed system. Generally used by the Colonial Marshals, this weapon is very effective against humans and Working Joes.

Although it can deactivate a synthetic with a single shot when aimed at the head, the 27-12 does not hurt the Xenomorph and does not make it retreat either. However, it can temporarily stun the creature.

3 Molotov

Alien Isolation - Molotov explosion scares the alien

Popularly known as a Molotov cocktail, in Alien: Isolation, it is an improvised, custom-made, weapon. This incendiary weapon consists of a bottle filled with a flammable liquid and a way to make the fire spread when it is broken, which in the game seems to be a device that creates a spark upon impact.

This is one of the two only weapons that can make the Alien retreat. If the player manages to hit the alien directly with a Molotov, the Xenomorph will go into the vents and stay there for a while.

2 Pipe Bomb

Alien Isolation - Amanda walks around with a pipe bomb

The Pipe Bomb is an explosive that detonates on impact. It can be lethal to both humans and synthetic Working Joes. An interesting way to use the Pipe Bomb is by placing it as an explosive trap. This causes the bomb to explode when someone approaches it.

This weapon can be made by combining Blasting Caps, Ethanol, Sensors, SCJ Injectors, and Scrap, and it is deadly. The Pipe Bomb is also capable of scaring away the Xenomorph for a while if it takes a direct hit or is close enough to the explosion.

1 Flamethrower

Alien Isolation - Flamethrower being found

This weapon is very similar to the one seen in the USCSS Nostromo. The Flamethrower uses propane as fuel and can be quite effective against humans as well. After all, it does shoot fire. The best thing about the Flamethrower is not how it can burn flesh, through.

The Flamethrower is an easy to aim weapon that can cause a significant effect on the Xenomorph. A close and sustained enough blast can make it retreat into the vents. After learning what the Flamethrower does, the Xenomorph might stop running towards the player for a moment if the player switches to this weapon when the alien is approaching.
