God of War Ragnarok has been quite the success for Sony and developer Santa Monica Studio. It has sold bucketloads, becoming the fastest selling first-party game in PlayStation history as it shifted 5.1 million units in its opening week, as well as picking up six awards at this year's The Game Awards, one of which was for Best Narrative.

God of War's narrative chops might have swayed Amazon Studios to pick up the TV show, while according to one of its bosses the adaptation will be faithful to the original. Speaking to Collider (via Pushsquare), Amazon Studios' Head of Television Vernon Sanders responded to questions over the adaptation and stated that the TV series will remain true to the game.

The studio's television chief told the interviewer that Amazon does "incredibly well" with adaptations and cited Invincible and The Boys, and how the streaming service has picked up a number of adaptations. But he mentioned the "passionate fan base" for God of War and how the studio looked for an emotional core to the story. He continued to talk about Rafe Judkins, who is showrunner on the God of War adaptation, and the show writers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby.

"At the centre of it all is this story of fathers and sons, and families, set against this giant epic landscape. So what Rafe and Mark and Hawk have come up with for the first season, and for the series, I think, is both incredibly true to the source material, and also compelling on its own. If you never played the game, you will fall in love with the show and feel very much invited in. So we think it's going to be huge," Sanders said.

The upcoming adaptation follows the 2018 entry with Kratos finding himself among the Norse gods in Midgard and journeying with his son Atreus after the death of his wife Faye and following her last wishes to spread her ashes on the highest peak in all the realms. The game's director Cory Barlog will be executive producer while the showrunner Rafe Judkins has helmed The Wheel of Time.
