The next Dungeons & Dragons campaign has been leaked early by Amazon. It will be taking adventurers back to Oerth, as several classic adventures will be combined into one as part of Ghosts of Saltmarsh.
Ghosts of Saltmarsh is combining several adventures from the first edition of Dungeons & Dragons collectively known as the "U" series, as well as several adventures from Dungeon magazine, including Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh, Danger at Dunwater, Salvage Operation, Isle of the Abbey, The Final Enemy, Tammeraut’s Fate, and The Styes.
One of the new features of Ghosts of Saltmarsh will be a set of expanded rules involving nautical adventures, which includes the operation of ships during battle and different deck plans for ships that the players will acquire during the campaign.
The different adventures in Ghosts of Saltmarsh all take place around a town called Saltmarsh and they will be broken up by level, which means that you can use the different parts of the adventure separately or combine them together into one campaign.
There haven't been that many nautical Dungeons & Dragons adventures, mostly because players generally don't care about how ships work and would prefer to use small-scale encounters, rather than having to hire and maintain a crew that they would need to protect the battle. The danger of falling into the water is also an annoyance, especially due to how armored warriors would sink like a stone and how spellcasters can't move their arms to use magic if they are trying to stay afloat. It's likely that the Ghosts of Saltmarsh adventure will involve smaller vessels that will be more manageable for the average party size, or would only require one or two crew members to run.
The idea of having a nautical-themed Dungeons & Dragons campaign is an intriguing one, due to the new kinds of hazards that one can find in the depths of the water and how the players will be restricted in their movement when trapped on a small boat. Rogues aren't going to be getting much use out of Cunning Action if they'are stuck on a fishing boat.
Ghosts of Saltmarsh will be released on May 21, 2019.
