After all, it wouldn't be Animal Crossing without everyone's favorite tanuki, Tom Nook. Tom Nook is the hardworking businessman who gets the player settled into their new home on the island while also urging them to repay a loan. But because of his business mindset and involvement in the player experience, he's become quite a lovable and meme-able guy.

Updated on June 6th, 2020 by Anastasia Maillot: It's been a few months since Animal Crossing: New Horizons was released. Overall, the game has been a huge success among new and old players, perfectly complementing an already prestigious franchise of highly popular and addictive games.

No game of the series would be a proper Animal Crossing without Tom Nook, the main man behind the island getaway plan. Controversial among fans, he's one of the most important characters when it comes to running an island. Here are five more hilarious memes that appreciate his both kind and cutthroat businessman personality.

15 I Want Pictures Of Spider-Man

Everyone has by now seen the famous photos of Tom Nook sitting by his desk and addressing the audience like an evil-looking businessman. While these photos alone put him into a pretty bad light among fans, there's another cool and funny connection in there.

He actually resembles a character from the old Spider-Man cartoons, J. Jonah Jameson, who is a demanding and cutthroat editor-in-chief of the cartoon's Daily Bugle newspaper. He and Tom Nook definitely have their no-nonsense priorities in common.

14 Misunderstood Nook

It's really easy to run into posts stating Tom Nook is an evil capitalist who just wants to make money off of innocent villagers and players. In a way, it's true that Nook doesn't do as much as he should on the island, at least not in raw labor.

However, what he lacks in muscle he brings in with efficiency and wealth. His money makes life on the island possible to begin with and allows it to thrive. All things considered, he's very obviously doing his absolute best given the circumstances. His loans could have worse terms, too!

13 Villager Picking

As of late many players have been focusing on getting their favorite villagers on their islands by treating unwanted villagers poorly. However, this process is pretty time-consuming and lengthy, and can sometimes backfire in unexpected ways if an empty plot that's just been abandoned gets sold.

There's nothing more frustrating than spending days ignoring an unwanted villager, only for Tom Nook to sell the land off as soon as possible, not giving the player a proper chance to find a fitting inhabitant.

12 Nook Vs Redd

A month or so back players were introduced to a returning character known as Redd, a kitsune fox with a business very similar to Tom Nook's but with rather questionable practices. He sells art, but some of it is obviously counterfeit art, and players must be cautious around him.

Tom Nook understandably doesn't like Redd coming in stealing a cut from his source of profit, the player's wallet. It's no wonder, then, that these two would be bitter rivals in the business world.

11 Questionable Naming

There is no practical end to the things players can do or exploit in order to create just the island they want, including putting in lewd or questionable names. While Nintendo doesn't allow for anything inappropriate, where there's a will there's definitely always a way.

Thankfully, so far Tom Nook has no idea about all the silly things going on across his islands, from giant Danny DeVito designs on the map to inappropriate names that would never pass if it was down to the Nintendo developers.

10 He's Waiting...

New Horizons begins with a deserted island on which you as the player hold a lot of power. Together with Tom Nook, you must build a new community from scratch in whatever fashion suits your taste. One of your first responsibilities is, of course, deciding on what to name your island.

Naturally, Tom Nook will put you on the spot and allow you to choose a fitting name. While it is very generous of him to leave the decision up to you, it's also a lot of pressure when he's staring you down. He won't even let you go until you've fully committed to the perfect island name.

9 Toe Beans

Tom Nook has been around since the very first Animal Crossing in the early 2000s, and by now, hardcore fans should know everything there is to know about his character. However, a shocking new revelation about Tom Nook has come to light in New Horizons: he has toe beans.

For anyone not familiar with the term, "toe beans" is internet lingo that refers to the paw pads beneath an animal's foot. Many people find this feature very cute on small critters like dogs and cats, so the fanbase was bound to lose it when they realized that Tom Nook, too, had pink little toe beans.

8 Selling Masks

Tom Nook is first and foremost a businessman. Therefore, he will scout out every opportunity to sell hot commodities for a hefty profit. One such commodity are medical masks, especially during a time of the coronavirus pandemic.

Because many citizens worry about getting sick, they've been stocking up and creating a shortage of face masks. Therefore, Tom Nook should be pulling some masks from his shelves and reserving them for medical staff who really need the added layer of protection. But instead, he's selling them all to the public for profit.

7 Loan Interest

The worst part about loans is the interest that adds up over time. If the interest rates are too high, it can be difficult to make enough money to pay a loan off in a timely manner. The great news in Animal Crossing is that Tom Nook opts to not charge any interest throughout the game.

If Tom Nook were truly evil, he could've always added interest to the money you owed. But even after five whole main series games, the tanuki has continued to stay true to his zero-interest policy. As an added bonus, the zero-interest policy comes with a "big bushy tail" as seen in the adorable fan art meme by @IGdoods.

6 Social Security

To some, Tom Nook can never come across as a mob boss or sketchy scammer who disguises himself as an innocent little critter. This impression stems from the debt aspect of the Animal Crossing games, as Tom Nook is always the one demanding and accepting your repayment.

Similarly, Tom Nook's little helpers, Timmy and Tommy, have also picked up their mentor's questionable ways of doing business. In this hilarious meme, the twins casually ask you for your social security number to poke fun at the potential shady side of Tom Nook's business.

5 Self Isolating

Tom Nook might not be the mayor of the island, but he is still very much a prominent figure in the community. With the microphone before him, he is in an optimal position to share any kind of message with the world.

Because the release of New Horizons happened to fall right in the midst of the global coronavirus pandemic, @Jack_Septic_Eye posted a meme of Tom Nook urging everyone to stay inside and limit the spread of the virus. At the very least, New Horizons can provide us with some good vibes as we self isolate.

4 Nook Look-Alike

In Animal Crossing, the entire community is made of talking animals aside from the playable human character. Tom Nook's character is a tanuki, which is a Japanese raccoon dog, and so are his little helpers, Timmy and Tommy.

In an attempt to blend in with the rest of the adorable animal folks, the human player is fully disguised with animal ears, an eye mask, and the exact same outfit as Tom Nook. The disguise is so perfect that Tom Nook himself can't quite put his finger on who the fourth tanuki is.

3 Ruining The Fun

Every gamer understands the feeling of excitement that comes with the release of a new game. But especially in the context of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, there's an extra sense of "a fresh start," where your entire world must be built from the bare minimum of a deserted island.

Eager to begin your island adventure, you're quickly interrupted by Tom Nook who reminds you of a debt that must be paid off. With the mood now ruined, you seek revenge on the tanuki as an added goal to achieve the perfect island of your dreams.

2 Get In, Loser

Mean Girls is a classic comedy when it comes to quotable films with meme-worthy content. One iconic scene was when Regina George pulled up, called Cady a "loser," and told her to get in the car so the girls could go shopping.

Mimicking that scene, Tom Nook pulls up in Regina George's car to inform the player that they're all going on vacation, as that is the expectation when accepting Nook's "vacation package" in New Horizons. Somehow, Regina George's unfiltered attitude works well to make the Tom Nook we know a little sassier.

1 Nook Sanders

With 2020 being another presidential election year, political campaigns have been circulating. In particular, one advertisement by presidential candidate, Bernie Sanders, became a popular template for memes. Usually, the meme would consist of Sanders asking "once again" for whatever fits the context of the given situation.

However, due to Tom Nook's role in collecting portions of the player's money, Sanders' original request for financial support suits Tom Nook perfectly. After all, it often feels as though Tom Nook's income depends greatly on the money you owe him. Without you, Tom Nook would have to find another human to invest in.
