Updated on June 17th, 2020 by Anastasia Maillot: Now that New Horizons is well past its launch and the grand majority of the current, existing villagers in the game have been confirmed, players have focused their efforts in trying to find the perfect inhabitants for their islands. With over 300 unique villagers to choose from, it's not easy task either.

For players who are still looking for ideas on interesting or unique, or just otherwise significant characters to the franchise, going for meaningful or otherwise interesting characters is one way to go about it. Here are five more cool villagers who deserve the love based on how fascinating their background or design is.

15 Bob

A famous cat villager, Bob is one of those characters that even those who have never played Animal Crossing will know by appearance. Bob might just look like any average lazy cat villager, but the truth is he plays a much more important in the game's history than one would imagine.

It's believed that Bob is actually the first villager ever made, based simply on the fact that his serial number is #1. Moreover, Bob's birthday is the first of the year, January 1st. It's possible that he was used to test the first versions of Animal Crossing. That alone makes him pivotal to the franchise, and a very interesting villager.

14 Coco

Coco might look creepy, but there's a lot of historical significance in her appearance and her Japanese name, Yayoi. This is a historical era in Japan, during which statues known as Haniwa statues were created by people. These statues served as the main point of reference for Animal Crossing's gyroids.

That's why Coco herself actually looks a lot like a gyroid, at least when it comes to her face. She has the normal personality, and although she's shaped like a rabbit, it's made very clear that she isn't actually modeled after an animal, much in the same way Ribbot and Sprocket are shaped like animals but don't actually look like them.

13 Julian

On the topic of cute and adorable villagers, there's one that deserves way more attention than he's getting right now. Julian is a smug horse villager, but he's more than a horse - he's actually a mythical creature. Namely a unicorn, as proven by the white horn on his forehead.

Julian's house is themed after stars and the night sky, which seem to be passions of his. Some theories state that this is related to his name, which would have been inspired by Julius Caesar, the Roman emperor, who claimed to be a descendant of Venus. The theory is further backed up by the fact that Julian's birthday is March 15th, the day Caesar was killed.

12 Raymond

What could be a more interesting villager, than the one who has turned the Internet and Animal Crossing fanbase completely upside down with his charms? Raymond is a smug cat villager who hasn't been in the game for very long. In fact, he's brand new to New Horizons, which might explain why so many fans fell in love with him.

Raymond has a business-themed house and wardrobe, but what really makes him charming is his heterochromia, which is a rare genetic condition that explains why his eyes are of two different colors. With how unique and rare he is, it's no wonder so many players want him on their island.

11 Pietro

Some villagers become wanted and famous simply because of their unlikable exterior, and smug villager Pietro definitely fits this category. It's difficult to recognize he's actually a sheep, given how colorful and different his appearance is. Pietro not only has clown makeup on, but he also wears a multicolored jester costume.

He's inspired by the original French Pierrot clown, a character that was historically created for comedy purposes. Interestingly, Pierrot is also the name of a Japanese animation studio which became famous in the early 2000s for series like Bleach, Naruto, and later on for Tokyo Ghoul.

10 Chevre

Chevre isn't specifically interesting based solely on personality, but her inclusion is more about legacy. She happens to be the only goat villager that has appeared in every Animal Crossing title which is quite a feat. Her name Chevre is the French word for goat, so it makes perfect sense. On top of being adorably cute, Chevre has a normal personality and is kind towards not only the player but most other villagers. She doesn't do well with cranky villagers but at the end of the day, who wants those types of people around anyway?

9 Wilbur

You'll likely never develop a relationship with Wilbur outside of a few exchanges of "thank you" and "you're welcome", but that doesn't mean that he won't earn a special place in your heart. For those who are unfamiliar, Wilbur is the pilot of the plane belonging to Dodo Airlines. They'll be the primary way people get to the island as well as depart. It's unclear yet if he and Orville, the Dodo Airlines receptionist, are related or both happen to be of the same species. Either way, Wilbur will be your eyes in the skies as you look to build a great life on the island.

8 Stitches

Stitches is one of the coolest and most original villagers the franchise has to offer. This colorful cub resembles a childhood stuffed animal that's been patched together by a loving parent or family member. Stitches has an aesthetic design that's almost as neat as its name and sports colorful stars across its torso.

Lazy villagers like Stitches are great because they tend to live a laid back lifestyle and are often the easiest to get along with. Just be careful where you set them up to live, as other personality types can clash heavily with lazy types.

7 Mira

Mira is a neat villager who is interesting to both those who know what her look is referencing and those who don't. Those who do will see that her outfit is similar to that of Sailor Venus from the super popular anime and manga known as Sailor Moon. For those who don't notice that Mira looks like an awesome superhero or professional wrestler, which is neat to a large group of people. Mira has an Uchi personality type, which is a newer one introduced that has the villager acting kind towards the player, but can come off as rude due to the straightforward and blunt communication skills.

6 Merengue

If there's one thing true about people its that most of them love deserts. When you mix that with a rhino, which happens to often be one of the go-to favorites of the animal kingdom for people, it seems like a perfect pairing. Merengue is a female rhino who resembles a strawberry shortcake who has dreams of becoming a pastry chef. She's adorable and sports a very unique design that features her horn being decorated as a colorful and ripe strawberry. It seems like her presence will make your life a piece of cake.

5 Orville

When you decide to visit other locations or simply get a better understanding of the new visitors and residents of your island, it seems that Orville will be a point of interest. He's the main receptionist and assistant at Dodo Airlines and will facilitate anything to do with the plane that the pilot Wilbur operates.

As previously mentioned it's unclear what the relationship is between Orville and Wilbur, but given their naming convention, a safe bet is that they're brothers. Here's hoping Orville doesn't become overwhelmed once the island starts filling up.

4 Lobo

When assessing which villagers you should welcome onto your island, cranky personality types are the ones that are the most difficult to usher in with open arms. Out of all of them, Lobo, a series regular who's appeared in every title, seems like the one worth giving a chance. On top of being a blue wolf, he has a close bond with K.K. Slider, the famous canine musician responsible for the series' phenomenal soundtrack. His house interior will let you listen to K.K. Safari whenever you like as he has it playing on his tape deck.

3 Marshal

When you're growing up as a kid you're taught to not judge a book by its cover, meaning you shouldn't come to a conclusion on something or someone simply based on what your eyes tell you. Marshal, the squirrel villager, is the perfect example of this rule of thumb.

On the surface, he looks like a grump and angry person, but through conversations, you come to realize he's very polite and kind but still has a smugness about him. Smug villagers are the most versatile and help build strong communities. He should be a welcome addition to your island.

2 Zipper T. Bunny

Zipper T. Bunny is in an interesting place with the growth of this bustling new island Tom Nook is orchestrating. This villager will be added via an update on the launch day of the new game and will be the centerpiece to the event occurring at that same time. It seems that those hopping in early will benefit from building a bond with this yellow bunny on what seems to be labeled as Bunny Day. This is the same holiday as Easter but it goes by a different name in hopes of not making anyone feel left out depending on their religious beliefs.

1 Isabelle

Now, Isabelle isn't technically a villager, but it's great to see her back in a prominent role. Though you'll still be dealing with Tom Nook on an almost day-to-day basis as a resident of the island, at least Isabelle will be there to help you accomplish certain tasks. She has quickly ascended to the spot of franchise mascot for Animal Crossing and has quickly become synonymous with the beloved series. People may consider her appearance to be a no-brainer, but in the world of video games and cameos, nothing should be taken for granted.
