One of the most compelling aspects of the Animal Crossing series is the plethora of interesting villagers you can meet and invite to your town. Historically, there have been six villager personality types, including Lazy, Peppy, Jock, Normal, Cranky, and Snooty. However, in New Horizons, two new personalities — Sisterly and Smug — have also become staples of the series after being introduced in New Leaf.

Smug villagers are always male animals who are overall kind and gentlemanly. However, because they know how cool they are, they tend to be a little more self-inflated when compared to other characters. Despite their massive egos, these villagers are always a blast to have around town. It might be difficult to choose which ones to invite to your island, but these fan favorites have the potential to be essential members of your community.

Updated on October 29th, 2022 by Kyle Chamaillard. It's only been a couple of years since Animal Crossing: New Horizons launched on the Switch, but it remains one of the most popular and relaxing games on the console. While it's unlikely to receive any new content moving forward, we've decided to update this list to include more of our favorite Smug villagers — just don't tell them, as it might go right to their heads.

15 Ken

Ken walks by some samurai armor in his house

Ken was introduced in Animal Crossing: New Leaf for the 3DS and is one of the original Smug villagers. He is a black and purple chicken that loves to dress up like a ninja and lives in a Japanese-themed house. He's got a solid sword collection, though we never actually see him playing with them.

There aren't many chicken villagers, and Ken is the only one in the series with a Smug personality. His tough exterior and pride make him the perfect choice in case you ever need someone to protect your island from an enemy invasion.

14 Tex

Tex talks to a villager inside his house

Like Ken, Tex has been in the series since Animal Crossing: New Leaf. He has a gray beak and pink markings around his eyes, which give him the look of an African penguin. While a majority of penguin villagers are Lazy, Tex stands out from the huddle by being the only one with a Smug personality.

Tex knows how to be cool and is originally seen wearing an impressive blue letter jacket. He uses the phrase "Picante" — which means spicy — and is always ready for a jam session with a house full of electric guitars, drums, and a turntable. The icy walls and flooring also inside his house reflect how chill of a neighbor Tex can be.

13 Eugene

Eugene sits at a table in The Roost as Brewster cleans a cup

Like many other Smug villagers, Eugene first appeared in Animal Crossing: New Leaf. His sunglasses, sideburns, and biker jacket might remind you of Danny Zuko and the T-Birds from Grease, but Eugene is a nice guy and a great koala to have around town.

Eugene might be Smug, but he can also be incredibly encouraging with his catchphrase "yeah buddy". Just be hesitant if he ever asks you to feel his sideburns. According to his profile in Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, you'll never be the same again after touching them.

12 Shep

Shepp looks at a villager as they cross a bridge

While dogs are one of the most common species in New Horizons, Shep is the only one with a Smug personality. He loves to use his long hair to take secret naps when no one is looking, so if you see him bobbing his head at a K.K concert, he might just be sleeping.

Shep lives a fairly humble lifestyle, which is reflected by his house that has the appearance of a cozy log cabin. There's a giant red rug in the middle, a matching bed, and a tiny kitchen area. He might not be great at having eye-to-eye conversations, but Shep will help make your island feel even more relaxing with his presence.

11 Kyle

Kyle sings while listening to a record player outside

This Smug wolf was introduced in New Leaf and hasn't gone anywhere since. In New Horizons, Kyle is the only male wolf to not have a Cranky personality, and has golden fur, spotted legs, and purple eyelids. He likes to say "alpha", likely referencing the leader of a pack of wolves.

Kyle's home shows how much he loves music and performing. It features a yellow drum set, a grand piano, an electric guitar, and a camera. He's ready to rock at any time, but Kyle is also known to be so forgetful he can't even remember where he lives most of the time.

10 Jacques

Jacques walks away furiously while Sheri looks at him

Jacques is one of two Smug bird villagers and made his debut in New Leaf. His knit hat is evocative of the legendary oceanographer Jacques Cousteau, but he would rather spend his time playing music than going for a swim. You can often hear him muttering "zut alors", which translates to "darn it" in English.

He might come off as pretentious at first, but once you get to know Jacques, he can quickly become one of your favorite villagers. He aspires to be a DJ one day and uses the turntable in his house to practice. Jacques' enthusiasm is contagious, and his willingness to party at the drop of a hat makes every event a bit more lively.

9 Zell

Zell sits by his piano while a villager stands in the corner

Though Zell is classified as a deer, his name and appearance are based on that of a gazelle. This is why he has spiraling horns, dark brown fur, and white markings. While his personality can be a lot to deal with you first meet him, Zell ends up being one of the kindest neighbors you can ask for.

Zell uses the phrase "pronk" and likes to keep things classy. His house is reminiscent of an upscale club, featuring a pool table, a grand piano, a record player, and cityscape wallpaper. His outfit might look like it fell out of a magazine from the mid-2000s, but Zell is worth taking the time to get to know.

8 Cephalobot

Cephalobot holds a soda can while standing in his tent

Cephalobot is one of the newest characters in the series and was introduced in New Horizons major 2.0 update in 2021. He's one of the few villagers to resemble a robot, and despite looking like an octopus, he acts more like an alien than anything else. Just check out his house, which looks suspiciously similar to the cockpit of a UFO.

Cephalobot's retro sweater helps him fit into society, and his Smug demeanor eventually dissipates after spending time with him. It's likely best to not question what's going on behind his glowing eyes, and enjoy his company before his house eventually blasts off into space.

7 Lucha

Lucha smiles outside of the wrestling ring

Lucha is a bird wearing a luchador mask, which immediately makes him one of the best Smug villagers in New Horizons. It's hard to tell if his smugness is part of an act or authentic, but this unique animal has a heart as big as his personality.

When he's not out and about, you can usually catch Lucha training at his home gym. It's got everything from a punching bag to weights, and his wallpaper of spectators is the perfect motivation for a Rocky-like workout montage. Lucha is a great companion — just make sure to refuse any offers to help him train in the ring.

6 Kidd

Kidd reads a book under a cherry blossom tree

Kidd is one of the few Smug villagers who was first introduced with a Lazy personality in the Japan-exclusive Animal Forest e+. Though he was absent for Wild World and City Folk, he eventually returned to New Leaf with a new personality that fits him much better than before.

His name is based on the word for a baby goat, "kid". He uses the phrase "wut" upon meeting you and is mostly known for his droopy eyes, purple fur, and golden horns. Kidd's home is warm and classy, featuring a steaming hot tub, a fireplace, and a purple lava lamp. He loves to dress to impress, so make sure he is invited to every event to liven up the party just a bit more.

5 Lionel

Lionel stands in a house full of furniture as a villager stands by a bathtub

Lionel is one of two Smug lions in the game, but it's hard to blame him for feeling so confident with that amazing mustache and majestic jacket. He made his debut in New Leaf and uses the catchphrase "precisely" to appear even more royal than he already looks.

Despite his elegant appearance, Lionel's house looks surprisingly modern. It's got a hot tub in the corner, a bed for a king, and wallpaper that makes it look like he's standing over a city. He might be one of the oldest villagers with a Smug personality, but Lionel is full of wisdom and provides an authoritative presence unlike anyone else.

4 Marshal

A villager looks very exited as Marshal eats a sandwich

Marshal emerged in New Leaf for the first time and quickly became one of the most popular villagers ever. This light yellow squirrel is identified by his rosy cheeks, deep frown, and side-swept hair, and has a huge attitude for his size. He is the only Smug squirrel, and wears a puffy vest to try to keep his coolness from escaping.

Marshal likes to use the word "sulky" and decorates his house to look like a classy café. Though the exact items might change from time to time, you're likely to find a coffee grinder, an espresso machine, a piano, and a couch to relax on. Marshal feels like the cool little brother that would try to stick up for you against someone twice his height.

3 Huck

Huck looks up at a villager while sitting under a tree

Huck is one of the original animals that appeared in the Japanese-exclusive Animal Forest for the N64, and Animal Crossing for the GameCube. He was originally a Lazy villager, but re-emerged in New Leaf as part of the Welcome Amiibo update with a Smug personality.

Huck is a gray frog with yellow cheeks and blue eyes, and he says the phrase "hopper". The interior of his New Horizons home is decorated like a hut, and features a hay bale and wooden table. His adventurous spirit and risk-taking behavior will certainly keep your island from ever getting boring.

2 Raymond

Raymond stands in front of a group of villagers on the beach

Raymond, the only Smug cat villager in New Horizons, is one of the most popular villagers in the game. He has one green eye and one brown, and sports a swishy blond hairstyle. His initial phrase, "crisp", keeps in line with his cool and collected personality.

When Raymond first meets you, he wears black-rimmed glasses and a waistcoat that gives him a business look. This theme is also reflected in his house. Raymond's home is full of office-themed items including a printer, a laptop, a water cooler, and a rolling chair. You can sense his smugness from a mile away, but Raymond is one of the most endearing and unique animals in New Horizons.

1 Julian

Julian stands by a crescent moon in his house

Though Julian is categorized as a horse, he is actually a celestial-themed unicorn. Julian is one of three Smug horses who first appeared in New Leaf and has been calling you "glitter" ever since. He's easily one of the most distinct villagers you can recruit to your town, and his elegance will only make your community feel even more magical.

Julian's house looks like a room from a palace in the sky. Simply being in this unicorn's presence feels like a dream come true, though you shouldn't let that go to his head. This free-spirited animal is the perfect choice if you're looking for a Smug villager with enough charisma to go around, but is so complacent with themselves you can easily roll your eyes at them whenever you need a good laugh.
