With May’s arrival comes new bugs, but also bugs that are leaving at the end of the month. Here’s all the creepy crawlies you’ll want to grab before May 31 in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
This week sees the arrival of a new month in the real world, and that means Animal Crossing: New Horizons is set to get a new set of insects for players to catch. But it also places some bugs on the clock; several species of insects might be around come June, so you’ve got just one month to capture all these bugs that are leaving at the end of the month.
We’ve already covered April’s departures, which leaves you with just one more day to catch ‘em. We’re going to get a head-start on May’s bugs so that there are no surprises later on. Here’s all the bugs you need to catch before they’re gone at the end of May.
Northern Hemisphere
As anyone who lives in the Northern Hemisphere can tell you, May is the month where most bugs either emerge from their seasonal slumber or arrive as part of their yearly migration. As such, not a single bug is leaving at the end of May, so New Horizons players can take it easy on the bug-catching for at least one month.
Southern Hemisphere
In the Southern Hemisphere, it’s a different story. May is the last month of Fall down south, so some bugs are going to be leaving as Winter arrives.
The rarest bug that you'll want to nab before the end of the month is the Orchid Mantis. Worth 2,400 bells, the Orchid Mantis can be found on white flowers during the daylight hours of 8 AM to 5 PM. The regular Mantis will also leave at the end of May and can be found during the same hours, but doesn't care what color of flower it perches on.
In the air, the Monarch Butterfly can be caught between 4 AM and 5 PM and sold for 140 bells. After May, Monarchs will migrate northward to lay their eggs after mating.
There are quite a few ground-dwelling bugs to catch before May is up. The Long Locust, Rice Grasshopper, and Migratory Locust are all bugging out at the end of the month, so catch them between the hours of 8 AM and 7 PM. The noisy Cricket is also leaving but keeps a nocturnal schedule of 5 PM to 8 AM.
Villagers will be happy to note that the humble Flea is also leaving at the end of May. We’re not sure why as fleas aren’t really seasonal creatures in the real world, but whatever. They’re gone in June, so hang out near some of your less hygienic villagers to see if you can nab one.
