In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Tom Nook has created his very own currency, known as Nook Miles. These can be accumulated by living life on the island and can be spent at guest services. Check out our guide for how to gain and spend those miles and what you can get for them.

Rewards And Recipes

You'll be introduced to Nook Miles as a way to pay for the flight to your island, your tent and the phone you never asked for but got anyway. After this, housing will be paid for with bells but the extra miles will net you some very useful items. All Nook Miles are spent at the Nook Stop Terminal in Resident Services and any extras can be traded for bells if desired, using a ticket redeemable in Nook's Cranny.

For those who love customization, there are several items available. The first is a custom design pro editor, which helps create better patterns for clothing. There are also new hairstyles and colors as well as a phone case cover. Alongside these, you can also purchase a range of Nook Inc branded furniture and clothing items.

For organization, there are two guides that increase inventory space, as well as a tool ring which gives you an easier to use tool menu. You can also aid your gathering further with the pretty good tools recipe for longer-lasting tools.

The largest reward is the Island Designer app, which lets you purchase passes to terraform your island, constructing cliffs and waterways as well as adding paths.

Finally, you can buy Nook Miles tickets. These allow you to visit random islands and are vital if you don't use online play. The random islands allow you to gather scarce resources such as non-native fruit and flowers.

Earning Everyday Miles

Nook Miles can be easily tracked on your phone, which will also show some daily goals. One of the easiest ways to get miles is to simply check the terminal each day. This act rewards 50 miles for the first day, 80 for the second, 100 for the third then goes up in 50-mile increments, maxing out at 7 days and 300 miles.

Early on you'll also gain access to the Nook Miles+ program that rewards you for doing everyday tasks. These tasks include catching bugs or fish, shaking trees, selling items, crafting and earning bells. The tasks are displayed on your phone and the first 5 each day reward double miles.

Just make sure to check regularly as all miles must be claimed manually by clicking the task in order to complete it and bring up a new one.

Challenges For Miles

There are also challenges to be unlocked that will award extra miles. These appear to span several categories including collecting, purchasing, decorating, planting, socializing and random.

Collecting rewards are for collecting things, obviously. Adding entries to the Critterpedia awards points, as does fishing up trash, finding fossils, shaking trees, shooting balloons and digging up bells. You can even get miles for successful consecutive fish catches and catching 5 wasps in a row.

In terms of spending, there are points for buying and selling turnips, selling produce such as fish and fruit, and using nook shopping. You'll also be rewarded for pulling and selling weeds. If your spending spree includes house decor then points are also available for upgrading your home, getting an S-rank home rating and remodeling your home's exterior. If you use the custom design app in the process you'll also get a cheeky mile boost. Decorators can also enjoy miles for buying furniture, storing items in their house, building fences and placing items outside.

If you want to truly grow your island you can earn points for planting different fruit, saplings, and flowers.  You can also gain miles for trashing your tools along the way. Once your island is to your liking, changing your town's flag and tune will award more points.

Socialization based rewards include speaking to your neighbors, visiting other islands, accepting guests and celebrating birthdays. You can also send letters and gifts as well as speaking to visitors. Buying from or participating in events or quests given by visitors will also reward miles.

Finally, random events can award miles as well. There are rewards for losing a balloon present in the water, using the bulletin board and being attacked by a scorpion or spider. You can also nab points for customizing your passport with the new titles miles will award you.

As you can say pretty much everything you do awards miles and they stack up fast so enjoy the rewards, it's a nice alternative to juggling your debt to Tom Nook with the need to buy furniture.
