Attendees of this year's Game Developers Conference (GDC) are in for a treat, as Nintendo has announced an hour-long session devoted to Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Titled, "Creating a New Horizon: Bringing Animal Crossing to Nintendo Switch," the presentation will take an in-depth look at the process behind adapting the beloved franchise for a new console.

Led by Producer Hisashi Nogami and Director Aya Kyogoku, the session promises to reveal the many secrets that go into crafting such a whimsical world full of adorable animals. The presenters will also discuss how changes in the real world have forced them to rethink the world of Animal Crossing, and how design philosophies integral to the series have morphed over time.

This year, GDC will be held March 16th through March 20th — ending the day that Animal Crossing: New Horizons lands on the Switch. The "Creating a New Horizon" presentation will be held in the middle of the conference on March 18th from 9:00am to 10:00am. This makes it a great way to not only learn more about the franchise, but a great promotion tool for Nintendo to advertise its upcoming game.

If Animal Crossing isn't your speed, GDC is loaded with other great sessions to attend. One presentation will discuss "Player Locomotion In Red Dead Redemption 2," another will look at World of Warcraft's design and how it was created for longevity, and yet another will discuss the AI challenges the Death Stranding team faced during production. The complete GDC schedule is staggering — you can check it out for yourself here.

Although it's unlikely that any new gameplay details will be revealed at GDC, it's always exciting to get a behind the scenes look at how popular games are pieced together. Animal Crossing is one of the most unique titles on the market, foregoing bloodshed and violence for neighborly love and bug collecting. The series has stayed true to its roots over the years, while adding just enough new content to keep the spark alive and players engaged.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons will release on March 20th for the Nintendo Switch. GDC 2020 will be held between March 16th and March 20th in San Francisco. Tickets start at $249 and go all the way up to $2,399 for complete access.
