Players are discovering that some of the artwork in Animal Crossing: New Horizons are not only fakes, but are also haunted in some way.

It appears that various paintings and sculptures in the game have abilities not normally found in inanimate objects. Players have noticed that at certain times throughout the day and at night paintings will close or open their eyes and sculptures will glow or hover.

The Youtuber Abdallah has covered this interesting phenomena on his Youtube channel. In a video released the other day he goes into the mechanics he’s discovered so far along with what time of day these haunted events will occur.

According to Gamestop, these paranormal paintings have been coming from the shady art dealer Redd. Sailing in on the Jolly Redd Treasure Trawler as part of the most recent update, Redd is willing to sell a variety of artwork to the player. The local artwork purveyor Blathers will reject many of these artworks as they are not genuine articles but clever forgeries.

It’s unclear where Redd is obtaining these haunted pieces, but it has taken a bunch of artwork players might not otherwise be interested in and given them value. Normally players would like be irritated to find the artwork they spent their in-game money on is a fake which makes it useless for museum purposes and useless for decoration. Who wants a fake Vermeer hanging in their home after all?

But now some of these paintings have paranormal features that for some may make them more special than the genuine article. Why have the legitimate Girl with a Pearl Earring when you can have one that opens and closes her eyes?

This is likely to create an entirely new market as players buy, sell, and trade haunting artwork with others and could see the creation of entirely new items as players build their own assets. Some players might be unnerved by a painting that seemingly falls asleep at night where others will be thrilled to create a collection of paranormal items for their horrific islands. And sitting pretty on his ship is the foxy Redd, making a killing as players come to him looking for real artwork to sell to the museum or haunted forgeries to fill their home while he offloads his stash of fakes.
