Animal Crossing: New Horizons has been around for over a year now, and in that time it, has introduced players to numerous characters. Some characters are villagers that live on the players' island or have chosen to move there after some persuasion. Other characters are visitors that arrive spontaneously, two of these being Gulliver and Gullivarrr.

The two seagull characters arrive on the players' shoreline unconscious and requiring assistance in getting back to their ship. The characteristics of the two seagulls, as well as fans believing they may be the same character, have led to numerous memes.

10 It's Gulliver Not Gullivarrr

It's Not Gulliver It's Gullivarrr Meme Animal Crossing New Horizons

Gulliver and Gullivarrr are commonly thought to be the same character as there are very few differences between them. If they are indeed the same character (as many fans suspect they are) the way that his name is pronounced is up for debate. However, the two seagulls are separate characters — one is a sailor and one is a pirate.

Therefore, if they are separate characters, then it is important to distinguish between the two by saying their names properly. After all, Gulliver wears a blue sailor's uniform and Gullivarrr wears a snazzy red pirate's outfit with a matching hat.

9 Gulliver's Crew Are Tired Of Him

Gulliver Being Thrown Overboard Meme Clean

Whenever Gulliver arrives on the shoreline, he babbles about having "fallen" overboard but it does sound more like foul play was involved. Yes, it is made to sound like his own crew members threw him overboard. Which makes the fans question what is going on with his crew on that ship and why do they hate him so much that they resort to attempted murder?

Having to ask players to scramble around in the sand looking for his broken communicator makes him seem rather helpless. This could be the reason his crew were fed up with him and decided to toss him over: he was more of a hindrance than a help.

8 Crawling Out Of The Ocean For Gullivarrr

Crawling Out Of The Ocean For Gullivarrr

When the pirate seagull Gullivarrr arrives on the players' islands, the only way to help him is by scouring the ocean to find his communicator part. This means diving down to the depths of the ocean and battling the odd creatures down there. Past the squids, sea cucumbers, and mantis shrimps the player has to find his technology.

Regardless of the weather or what time of day it is, the player must do it if they want to help him. This does seem unfair of Gullivarrr to ask this of the player during the winter months as the ocean is probably freezing!

7 Gulliver Keeps Coming Back

Gulliver Appearing AGAIN meme Animal Crossing

Redditor u/usuallconfused91 accurately summed up how most players feel about Gulliver. Each time he or Gullivarrr appears, they are taking up visitor slots within the game. In Animal Crossing: New Horizons players can only have one outside character visiting at a time. Gulliver seems to consistently re-spawn on some people's islands, which then stops other characters from visiting.

As entertaining as Gulliver's misadventures are, he really does not offer the benefits of other visitors. Many players see less value in the rewards provided by Gulliver and often do not see a benefit to his consistent appearances.

6 Gulliver Is Not Welcome

Gulliver's crew is probably not happy to see him each time he returns to their boat. The first time he supposedly fell off did look like an accident, but the more the player returns him, the more he reappears on the shore. It does seem like the crew have gotten completely fed up with him and are shoving him overboard with the hope he will not come back.

The ever unshakeable Gulliver will always find his way back with or without the help of the player. Fans assume this must seriously annoy the crew who are desperately trying to see the back of the unwavering bird.

5 Identity Theft

Gullivarrr Identity Thief Meme Animal Crossing

Even when he dresses differently, from Gulliver many players are suspicious of Gullivarr, including Redditor u/izzyr1223. It is weird how they do not show up on the island at the same time. That could be to do with the fact only one visiting character spawns at a time but surely it could be a cover for identity theft. Also, the rewards he provides are totally different from Gulliver's.

After all, the way Gulliver acts does seem a bit like over-acting in order to try to hide something.  Then again, he may just be a really dramatic pirate. All poor Gullivarrr wants to do is to go home to his ship and go back to being a pirate. However, fans are reluctant to let it go and will continue to be suspicious of him.

4 Forgetting About Gulliver

Animal Crossing has a lot of different activities to do every single day alone or with friends. This means that it is incredibly easy for gamers to become distracted whilst they were meant to be accomplishing another task. Also, with Gulliver spawning quite a lot, it is easy to get disinterested in helping him out.

With Gulliver, it seems to not be too much of an issue if players forget about him. When the day ends, by some miracle, he has found a way to be rescued on his own. The only thing that players miss out on by forgetting about him is that they will not get a reward from him.

3 Gulliver Elegantly Jumps Ship

With how much Gulliver seems to be falling overboard (it's still likely he was pushed) it is amusing to assume he has become efficient at it. The seagull seems to spend an inexplicable amount of time drifting through the ocean after he has gone overboard. Maybe he likes diving off the edges of his boat but his wings stop him from swimming back in time to stop his crew from abandoning him.

Perhaps he may even start to do swan dives and elegant jumps off of the edge when he feels himself falling.  The amount that Gulliver ends up going over the edge, it's fair to assume he may get bored and do new things to keep it interesting.

2 Gulliver Is A Wild One

The seagull often blabbers on about his adventures and travels in sometimes incoherent sentences. However, if all of his fanciful tales are true and he did fall overboard on his own ship, then perhaps Gulliver is a bit wild. Some of his commentary whilst semi-conscious does back up this idea that he can do things that are unorthodox.

If his comments are to be believed then it is very likely that Gulliver gets himself into trouble from time to time. It's funny to think that of all the things that he has possibly done in his lifetime, licking cookies was the one that landed him washed up on the island. Maybe Gulliver was running from the scene of the crime on his boat and it was going so fast that he lost his balance, causing him to fall over the edge.

1 Love Still Exists For The Seagulls

Waiting For Gulliver Meme Animal Crossing

Despite the seagulls having qualities that irritate some, there is still a lot of love out there for them in the fandom. The rewards they provide may not be to the taste of some players, however, there are plenty that try to collect a complete set. Within Animal Crossing: New Horizons there are a lot of recipes to collect that allow players to build furniture. As a reward for helping them, Gulliver and Gullivarrr hand over recipes to the player.

For those who try to collect the complete set of recipes, it should be relatively easy considering how much the seagulls spawn. However, as with anything that seems simple the game can be surprisingly frustrating. When players want Gulliver or Gullivarr, they are nowhere to be seen for a while.
