Aside from being a great, relaxing game about tending to a gorgeous island and watching it grow into something unique, Animal Crossing: New Horizons is also a story about some of its most popular characters and the countless villagers. Many of them have become extremely well-known, especially in the past months, but none are as famous as Tom Nook.

Hated for always managing to pressure the player to take a loan and loved for being so relaxed and wholesome, he's a bit of a controversial character among fans. That said, there are also several details about him that make no sense or are just plain hilarious. Here's what the internet has to say about everyone's favorite raccoon loan shark.

10 How New Horizons Began

For those who have been wondering what the inspiration for New Horizons was, well, we may be on to something here. Given just how much wealth Tom Nook has been collecting over the years from the player (and the other poor villagers), it's probable he's part of the 1%.

As such, it's no wonder he wants to start a new life on a deserted island. After all, the poor old raccoon needs a place to stash all the bells he's sitting on But... someone needs to actually build the island for him. That's where the player comes in.

9 Celebration Ceremony

Ah, celebrating the small things in life. It's important to take a moment and appreciate the small steps that players have taken on their Animal Crossing islands, from finishing that bridge to finally opening up a brand new shop.

No matter what the player chooses to say during these ceremonies, everyone always seems to absolutely love it, especially Tom Nook. In his eyes, the player is a genius who has a fantastic way with words.

8 Raccoon Vs Fox

The most epic rivalry in video game history has to be the one between Tom Nook and Redd, the sly fox who occasionally sells falsified art. Why are they rivals? It's unclear, but according to what is known, Redd once wronged Tom during a joint business venture.

Still, why can't these two just let bygones be bygones? Redd is obviously tapping into a market that Tom could benefit from going into, and while their business models might be different, they're surprisingly similar as characters. Poor Isabelle has her work cut out for her.

7 Pay Up

Anyone even slightly familiar with the pricing in Animal Crossing will know that sometimes in Nook's Cranny, things get a little bit confusing — to put it lightly. And while Timmy and Tommy definitely have their role to play in this, so does Tom, who finances all their endeavors.

It's not uncommon to see weird pricing, like a chessboard that costs over a 100, 000 bells, (even though that item happens to be a famous Easter egg). Clearly, Tom and his nephews don't care about fair prices.

6 Terraforming Nightmares

Creating that perfect island is what everyone dreams of. With terraforming in the game now, too, it's easy to see why everyone's so worked up over not making mistakes and ensuring everything is in its rightful place.

Unfortunately, mistakes do happen, and when they do, it's off to see Tom Nook about fixing them and moving things around. Surely, he knows to expect it by now, so why would he even give the player the power to screw up the only island he has?

5 Seems Legit

There's nothing quite as satisfying as selling a whole bunch of trash and weeds and dead fish to the nephews of Tom Nook, only to use the bells acquired from Timmy and Tommy to pay off one's debts.

It's even funnier when the player realizes that it's very likely Tom Nook is helping Timmy and Tommy financially, and probably provides much of their bells and buying power. Oh well, serves Tom right for his steep pricing. Why does he even agree to this kind of system?

4 How Many Toms Are There?

It's a bit sad and unrealistic that only the player travels to other islands. After all, anyone should be able to use the Nook Stop and purchase Nook Miles tickets, right? Moreover, with his infinite money, Tom Nook should have a private jet.

And yet, it would probably be a bit of a strange occurrence to have Tom Nook arrive on another island, only to find an exact copy of himself sitting behind the resident services counter. Now that's a scene most fans would pay to see.

3 Once Again Asking For Financial Support

Tom Nook is a ruthless businessman, and there's really no way around it. Anything and everything in his life revolves around profit and development, as is shown in how he runs the island in the first place. Everything has a price tag, and everything can be turned into a loan.

If there's a new project or quest ahead, the player can be almost 100% certain that Tom Nook will ask for some bells to complete it. At this point, it's almost his catchpharse.

2 A Simple Solution

Players living on a shared island may have come across the feature which has Tom Nook suggest that he can assist the player in deleting the save data of another resident. It's a handy little feature, but also a bit funny when thought about.

The whole expression "deleting a resident" sounds pretty amusing, and some players even thought of another popular game that might accurately describe how Tom goes about this whole ordeal...

1 A Marriage Out Of Necessity

How does one actually get rid of all these loans once and for all? Well, other than making a lot of bills to pay them off, there might be an alternate route, in an alternate universe. If it were possible, many players would probably go for it, too.

If only Tom Nook would accept the player's proposal. Just imagine how many financial issues would be solved almost immediately, and all those bells that would drop into the player's bank account.
