The Animal Crossing franchise has used tools in gameplay for some time, but New Horizons introduced crafting to the mix! By making your own tools, you're able to leap over running rivers, climb up steep cliffs, chop down entire trees, and more! However, at the beginning of the game, it's not entirely clear how these tools are obtained. To make your experience as easy as possible, we've provided all the details in this one, simple article. Read on!
How To Get A Fishing Rod
To get your first Fishing Rod, you'll have to participate in Tom Nook's first DIY workshop. He'll have you craft a Flimsy Fishing Rod and give you that recipe. After that, you'll be able to craft a Fishing Rod anytime you want! You can also purchase a unique Fishing Rod from Nook's Cranny anytime it's open for 2,500 Bells.

How To Get A Net
Just like the Fishing Rod, to get your first net you need to participate in Tom Nook's very first DIY Workshop. He asks you to craft a Flimsy Fishing Rod, but he'll also give you the recipe for the Flimsy Net, so you can craft it after. There are more reliable nets available, but not until later in the game. If you just want to purchase one, they're also available at Nook's Cranny anytime the store is open for 2,500 Bells.

How To Get An Axe
Your first axe can be obtained after doing Tom Nook's first DIY workshop, since that'll prompt him to give you the Flimsy Axe recipe. Just craft it with the ingredients listed below! Of course, if you're in a rush, you can purchase an Axe (but notably not a Stone Axe) from Nook's Cranny for 2,500 Bells.

How To Get A Shovel
There are two ways you can get your first shovel:
- Give Tom Nook a lot of creatures you find on the Island until he invites Blathers to move in, then talk to Blathers.
- Purchase the recipe from Timmy and Tommy (before or after building Nook's Cranny).
After that, you'll be able to craft them... or you could buy a Flimsy Shovel (but not a regular Shovel) from Nook's Cranny for 800 Bells.

How To Get A Watering Can
To get your first Watering Can, you'll need to donate four creatures to Tom Nook. Either bugs or fish will count towards this total. Once that's done, he'll give you the recipe for a Flimsy Watering Can and you can craft it! If you get too lazy to do that, though, never fear: they're also sold at Nook's Cranny for 2,500 Bells.

How To Get A Slingshot
You won't be able to get your first Slingshot until you build Nook's Cranny for Timmy and Tommy. After that, you can get the recipe for a Slingshot by buying it from the cabinet there! As always, Timmy and Tommy also sell Slingshots for players who can pay 2,500 Bells and don't want to craft them themselves.

How To Get A Ladder
To get your first Ladder, which allows you to climb cliffs on your island, you'll need to get to the stage where you and Tom Nook are preparing plots for new, additional residents. After you're finished getting the plots ready, Tom Nook gives you the recipe for a Ladder! It's worth noting that you can't just buy a Ladder from Nook's Cranny if you need it.

How To Get A Vaulting Pole
Your first Vaulting Pole will be obtained after you donate 5 creatures to Tom Nook (either bugs or fish). As thanks, he'll give you the recipe for a Vaulting Pole and you can craft it with the materials listed below! Like the Ladder, Nook's Cranny doesn't sell Vaulting Poles, so you have to craft it if you need one.

How To Get A Wand
To get your first Wand, you'll need to run into Celeste for the first time. Each day that you meet her, she'll provide a new unique recipe, but the first one is always a Star Wand (which is crafted with x1 Large Star Fragment and x3 Star Fragments).
There are tons of other kinds of Wands you can discover, but they all operate the exact same way and don't have any durability. Using one Wand over another is just for the aesthetic. Most of the recipes for other Wands are obtained from Celeste, but others are provided by NPCs during certain festivals and holidays or by completing events.
