Animal Crossing: New Horizons gives you a lot of freedom when it comes to creating your own island paradise. Part of that involves choosing which neighbors you'll share your home with, but if you end up with a villager you aren't quite so keen on, it can be difficult to get them to move away from your island.

Perhaps your first campsite villager wasn't quite who you were expecting, you've just fallen out of love with one of your villagers, or you just want to have a new face around the neighborhood. Getting villagers to move out can be a challenging process, but there is a way to do so.

How To Get Villagers To Move Out

There are a few myths surrounding how to move out your villagers. Hitting them with a net or simply ignoring them will not work.

The game randomly selects who will want to move out after a certain period of time, and there's no real way to influence which villager it will pick.

However, you can change the date and time on your Switch to speed up when the game selects a villager to move out.

Changing the date and time on your Switch means time will pass on your island — weeds will grow, seasons will change, etc. Only do this method if you're fine with this.

If you have the game open, save and exit. Head to your Switch's settings. Go into System, then Date and Time. You will need to turn off "Synchronize Clock via Internet."

Set the date to at least seven days in the future and set the time to be in the morning, around 9am.

It needs to be a reasonable hour; otherwise, your villagers may be asleep. You also need ample time left in the day.

Open up your game. After Isabelle has read out her announcements, look around your island for a villager who has a thought bubble.

Villagers can only have a thought bubble while outside. If none of your villagers has one, and there are some villagers inside buildings, skip ahead an hour or two in the day. The remaining villagers should now be outside, and you can check them too.

If the villager you want to move out has a thought bubble, talk to them, and agree for them to move away.

If a villager you don't want to move has a thought bubble, do not speak to them, and skip to the next day. A different villager should have a thought bubble. Keep skipping until the villager you want to move has a thought bubble.

If no villager has a thought bubble, keep skipping a few days at a time until you find one.

When you speak to a villager with a thought bubble, it's possible that they won't ask to move away, and may instead ask something else from you.

If this happens, end the conversation and skip ahead within the same day to check if another thought bubble appears. If not, skip ahead a few more days.
