There are many ways to play Animal Crossing: New Horizons and, while there are broad measures of success, one thing that most people have in common is the need for lots of Bells. Without a doubt, the quickest and most efficient way of earning Bells is by playing the Stalk Market through buying Turnips at a low price and selling them at a higher one (a feature that has been around in series for several games).RELATED: The Best PC Games Like Animal CrossingThere are two ways to proceed. First, a player can play the Stalk Market entirely on their own without needing to interact with any other players, and their returns will be modest, at best. The second way is lucrative and can make a player massive returns on their investment, every week, without fail, but it requires a subscription to Nintendo Switch Online and a little investigative work to pay off. We will describe both methods, since players may prefer one style over the other.Updated April 9, 2022, by Gabrielle Huston: Animal Crossing: New Horizons has been out for more than two years now, so we know much more about the Stalk Market and the online forums you can use to make the most of it. This article has been updated with brand-new info and clarifying visuals to guide you through the process. Good luck getting rich!

What Is The Stalk Market?

Animal Crossing New Horizons - player talking to Timmy in Nook's Cranny about turnips

The Stalk Market is a process where you buy Turnips, then sell them for more money to Timmy and Tommy at Nook's Cranny.

Throughout the week, players can visit Timmy and Tommy to learn how much they are purchasing Turnips for, with the price changing every morning and afternoon. The idea of the Stalk Market is simple and is designed after the most basic principles of a real stock market: buy low, sell high.

Turnips can be sold every day of the week except Sunday, which is when players can stock up for the following week. The idea is to purchase Turnips and then find the best time to sell them at a profit, though in some cases the prices might plummet, meaning that there will be a loss, just like a real stock market.

If you bought Turnips for 91 Bells and the Nook brothers offer you 110 Bells for each Turnips, will you take the deal, or wait and hope for a better offer? You have one week to work with, so you can't wait forever! The Turnips will rot if you keep them for any longer than that.

How To Buy Turnips

Animal Crossing New Horizons - player talking to Daisy Mae

A unique NPC, Daisy Mae, visits your island every Sunday between 5 a.m. and noon. (She appears for the first time on the Sunday after you complete Nook's Cranny.) She wanders around the island, so you'll need to track her down.

During that brief window, players can purchase Turnips from Daisy Mae, in stacks of ten, for a cost of between 90 and 110 Bells each. The cost changes every week.

Buying Turnips On Other Players' Islands

Animal Crossing New Horizons - player talking to Daisy Mae (1)

It's possible to visit another player's island and buy Turnips from Daisy Mae at the price she's set there. Even if Daisy Mae offered you a really high price on your own island, she may have offered to sell them to this other player for much less.

Even though the range of price isn't very extreme, it makes a huge difference if you're buying thousands of Turnips at a time; getting those thousands of Turnips for 90 Bells instead of 110 Bells means that you aren't cutting into your profits. If you're just buying a few stacks of Turnips, you don't need to worry about this too much.

Be Careful With Time Travel!

Animal Crossing New Horizons - Tom Nook's morning announcements

Time traveling in Animal Crossing has been a common practice for years, and the community is divided on whether such behavior should be allowed, if it's ethical, and more. We do not cast judgment on anyone who chooses to time travel or not, but players need to be aware that they can ruin their weekly investment by doing so.

There are two potential ways you can affect your turnips through time travel:

  1. As we mentioned previously, Turnips go rotten after one week. If you time travel further ahead than that, you'll find your turnips are rotten.
  2. If you time travel forward less than a week (for example, just to the next day) your turnips will still be intact; however, if you return to your original time, the Turnips know about it and go bad. Don't ask us how.

Be careful if time travel is a normal part of your gameplay!RELATED: Animal Crossing: New Horizons - Everything You Need To Know About Fishing

Selling Turnips: What You Need To Know First

Selling Turnips Offline

Animal Crossing New Horizons - turnip tracker on Nintendo Switch Online

The Stalk Market was originally meant to be a single-player experience, watching trends in prices and selling at the best time to make a profit. This was before the advent of social media and online forums.

If you're playing the Stalk Market in this way, either because you do not want to socialize with other players or do not have Nintendo Switch Online, you will need to track the prices offered by Timmy and Tommy in the mornings and afternoons to calculate the trends of their weekly price. The Nintendo Switch Online app offers an Island Newspaper for Animal Crossing: New Horizons that will track the increases and decreases for you (seen in the image above), but you have to be paying for Nintendo Switch Online to see it.

Selling Turnips Online (AKA Making The Big Bells)

Animal Crossing New Horizons - players hanging out together on one island

Without a doubt, players can make the most profit each week, completely risk-free, and 100% of the time by engaging with the community to visit the island of a player with a high Turnip price.

Since each player has their own unique prices, some will see their prices plummet, while others may have Timmy and Tommy offering 400, 500, or even 600 Bells per Turnip.

Most players will open their island to visitors when they have a good Turnip price simply to help out the community, and do not expect anything in return. However, leaving a small tip is often appreciated. Some players who open their island request a small fee of Bells or Nook Miles Tickets, which is fair, since they're spending their time and energy keeping their island open for you. They also may make suggestions about the types of tips they'd like, if they're in need of something specific. However, beware of opportunistic players, demanding rare items or an excessive amount of Bells as an entry fee. These people are best avoided.NEXT: All Gyroids In Animal Crossing: New Horizons
