Could hurricane season be approaching in Animal Crossing: New Horizons?

Weather has a critical role to play in ACNH. Rainstorms bring fresh fauna to your island’s shores and clear skies trigger meteor showers that gild your island within fallen star fragments. There’s one weather feature, however, that has a relatively benign effect on gameplay: wind.

Whether it gently rustles through the cherry grove on the far reaches of your island or carries a gift-bearing balloon overhead, wind is one of Animal Crossing’s gentlest forces and perhaps the easiest to dismiss.

At least, it used to be, until recently. Last week, dataminer Ninji shared a video on Twitter that features a high-powered windstorm ravaging his island. “Turning up the wind power in #ACNH makes the game look very surreal,” he tweets. The clip shows palm fronds violently shaking and flowers clinging to the earth like their life depends on it as they seize back and forth.

Immediately, ACNH fans were crawling all over the thread. Some speculated that Nintendo must be planning a “hurricane update” if the wind has the ability to be turned up this high. “No home insurance, time to ask Tom Nook for another loan,” says concerned Twitter user iblogalott.

Others began to question the game’s physics in a facetious manner, lightly poking fun at the fact that a hurricane does not blow away your flowers' blossoms the way that your player character can.

A few curious users even started looking for help re-creating windstorms on their own islands. Ninji, however, doesn’t seem to be handing out any modding lessons.

Sofar, Nintendo has offered no hint that a hurricane feature is going to be added to the game, despite these animations existing in-game. So, unless you have the skills that Ninji has in tinkering with the game’s mechanics, you’ll have to enjoy the “surreal” effects of an Animal Crossing windstorm from afar and hope for an announcement soon.
