Very rarely can people create a character who's as unattractive as Caustic is and still manage to have him be super cool looking. The world of Apex Legends is filled with robots, voidwalkers, and soldiers, so how does a scientist focusing on gasses manage?

Caustic happens to not only have a unique set of abilities, but he also gets some of the coolest skins the game has to offer. The old guy's mask covers more than just his identity. Let's take a look at 10 things you didn't know about Apex Legends' toxic one, Caustic.

10 Why He Competes

Most of the people who compete in the Apex Games are doing it for pride, money, or fame. Caustic on the other hand simply is in it to further experiment and test out his new toxic gasses. His ongoing belief in using living subjects has entered the ultimate game stage of needing to see how it affects humans.

He may be a mysterious creep, and he may be a psychotic murderer, but at least he looks cool while doing it. Luckily for everyone else, he's old and slow. Just don't get trapped indoors with him and his fumes.

9 A Gaseous Voice

JB Blanc is the man who brought the gaseous scientist to life in Apex Legends. Along with playing the role of Caustic in Apex Legends Blanc has appeared in several other notable projects. Some of the standouts include the portrayal of Kano in Mortal Kombat 11 and a recurring role on AMC's Better Call Saul.

With a long list of credits and a recent string of video game roles, look for Blanc to likely appear in many more AAA games in the years to come. Maybe we'll hear him in an upcoming Apex Legends animated short.

8 Age

Caustic is one of if not the oldest competitor in the Apex Games. At the ripe old age of 48, he's not a spring chicken. Due to his age, he's a slower more lumbering character who falls on the aide of his gas canisters to give him the advantage.

In King's Canyon he's never going to win a sprinting or climbing competition, but, likely, he'd out trap you. He's a brilliant mind that may be a bit mad and/or psychotic, but remember that with age comes a ton of experience and knowledge.

7 Home-World

Caustic was born on the planet known as Gaea. It was home to Humbert Labs, the premier manufacturer of pesticides for the Frontier crops, and Caustic's future employer. Gaea is located in The Outlands which means Caustic's venture onto Solace and into the Apex Games wasn't too far of a space trek.

In Greek mythology, Gaea is the goddess of Earth which likely means his home planet was lush and vibrant and home to lots of vegetation and wildlife. It could have also been named ironically.

6 Real Name

Caustic, or as he was once known as, Alexander Maxwell Nox, was born to parents who also were known by their complete name. This means that Caustic was born to a family of wealth, pride, and/or pretension.

His last name Nox is a clever play on NOx which is a noun for oxides of nitrogen, more specifically as pollutants in the atmosphere. As someone who relies on toxic fumes to overcome his enemies, it's a great way to tie-in his defining characteristics back into his name.

5 Parents

The parents of the legend known as Caustic were Alexander Rutherford Nox and Katerina Ticacek Nox. His father and mother both have very traditional and historic sounding names that fit that of a classic president or American hero.

He likely came from a family of wealth and/or one that found pride in their familial history. Though Caustic is still alive there is truth to the belief that their son Alexander Maxwell Nox died that day in the lab as the man he is now is unrecognizable.

4 Past Life

Caustic began as a research scientist at Humbert Labs on his home-world known as Gaea. They were the leading manufacturer for pesticides for the Frontier crops and were responsible for making sure the crops were uncontaminated and survived the entire harvest season.

The lab was constantly experimenting trying to come up with stronger and more efficient formulas to be the most effective. This constant state of experimentation and iteration was likely the cause of Caustic's mental shift.

3 Mad Scientist

Though his career may have started with his mind in the right place, he was ultimately driven mad. It's unclear whether he has always that way and it finally came to light, or the exposure to the chemicals severely affecting his brain functions.

He went from testing the pesticides on inert tissue to seeking out living things as test subjects. He became so consumed by wanting to create the most potent and effect gasses that he ultimately left his self-respect and morality at the door.

2 Terminally Ill?

There's an ongoing community theory that Caustic may be terminally ill. He can be heard stating that he has faced his death and the line is then followed by him coughing and hacking under his mask.

It would make sense that a man who spends years experimenting with dangerous chemicals and toxins could develop a terminal disease. Often the equipment used to protect them is found to not be 100% effective in studies in the years that follow. Can a man cheat death twice in his life?

1 Cheating Death

Often when a story is told about someone cheating death and living despite everyone thinking they perished, it was done on purpose for a specific reason. For Caustic it's unclear whether he wanted to fake his death to escape punishment for his cruel experiments, or if he simply took advantage of the opportunity at the moment.

Not only was he presumed dead, but his mother also identified him as a charred corpse that was beyond recognition. His possible terminal disease may have been the universe's form of karma, however.
