In response to fan demand, Apex Legends is giving its players a Duos Mode, though only for a limited time. But not all pairs are equal. Like peanut butter and jelly or chicken and waffles, sometimes two very different things complement one another in an amazing way.

In most battle royale games, duos games tend to play out more slowly than full squad games. Players aren’t always as aggressive since they have only one another to help them should they catch themselves in a bind. So, they tend to be more methodological, instead of focusing on reckless pushes and superior weaponry.

Taken together, this means that the characters’ dependence on tactical abilities is greater than in other modes. Therefore, duos should aim to play as characters that have abilities that aren't too similar, giving them the most options for tactically-sound plays in any situation.

Octane and Wraith

This is a solid combo for the team that plans to get sweaty. Both characters have abilities that allow them to reposition very quickly and dodge income bullets. Further, Octane’s health regeneration allows him to take some damage from the storm or distant sniper fire while Wraith’s phase ability can help her temporarily avoid damage completely in both of these situations.

Together, Octane’s speed and jump pad and Wraith’s portal allow the characters to quickly move around the map, dodging enemies and finding sneaky ways to attack their opponents as a pair.

Bangalore and Bloodhound

Players have mixed feelings about Bangalore’s smoke tactical ability. Sure, it blocks enemies’ visibility as a Banglore heals or resurrects teammates. But it can also can cause issues when a Bangalore player uses it at the wrong time. For example, it can obstruct vision for Bangalore’s own teammates, which in turn can cause confusion as to what's happening around them.

While Digital Threat optics alleviate some of these issues, Bloodhound’s Tactical and Ultimate offer far more guarantees that players can understand what's happening in these situations. The character's sonar and detection abilities each let the Bloodhound player see through smoke. This becomes a serious tactical advantage as Bangalore can use the smoke to obscure enemies’ sight, while Bloodhound can see right through this while the enemies struggle to gain their bearings. These overlapping tactics mean these two are a strong pair when playing together.

Wattson and Lifeline

There are few things in life as frustrating as making it to the game’s final circles but running low on health and shields. In most games, players desperately need health and shield items. Even if the players have stacked tons of kills, med kits and shield cells may be in short supply by the time players make it to the end game.

Fortunately, Wattson’s tactical allows shield regeneration and Lifeline’s health drone restores health. A duo comprised of Wattson and Lifeline means players who are willing to play somewhat defensively have a number of options on this front. Assuming they have good positions with lots of cover, they can let other teams fight it out while they peek out for kills and knocks at a distance. Wattson's ultimate ability can protect people from grenades and artillery strikes from Gibraltars and Bangalores. Additionally, opponents are often afraid to push Wattson due to her fences, which cause a small amount of damage but also slow down players, making them easy targets. This makes it difficult for enemies to rush, which can give Lifeline enough time to resurrect Wattson should she get knocked at any point.

Pathfinder and Crypto

The magic of this duo is that Crypto’s abilities are most useful if used while he’s hidden. His drone allows him to see over distances while he remains stationary. On the other hand, Pathfinder excels in getting around the map quickly. So, if Crypto uses his drone to spot another team in a building nearby, a Pathfinder can zipline them both to the top of that building quickly before the opposing team has a chance to gather their bearing and assert a defense. With the high ground advantage, the Pathfinder and Crypto team can then take the fight.

Wraith and Caustic

Another take on the offensive/defensive pairing, Wraith and Caustic are a surprisingly strong combo for those who know how to properly play these characters.

There's a myriad of ways in which players can exercise 200 IQ strategies involving these characters. For example, a Wraith can place portals in storm zones, tricking lagging players to taking them right into Caustic traps. The Wraith can also set portals up in tricky locations such as caves or in multi-level buildings, placing gas at each side of the entrance and the exit and making it tough for opponents to move without getting gassed. The gas not only hinders visibility and damages enemies, but it slows them down. This gives the Caustic and Wraith team an easy opportunity to outplay their opponents.

Mirage and Pathfinder

Perhaps there’s no real better to play as these characters except for the fact that they’re funny as a pair. One of Mirage’s voice lines has him saying, “I hope I don’t have to play with that smiling robot,” before he says he’s just kidding. This is an obvious reference to Pathfinder and seems to imply they're a sort of default frenemy duo. These characters are comic relief, and their pairing seems to be conducive to a buddy comedy a la Harry and Lloyd from Dumb and Dumber.

From a tactical standpoint, Mirage is effective at causing distractions. If a Mirage can successfully capture the attention of an opposing duo, the Pathfinder can grapple over to the team and get them while they're not paying attention to him. And, if done especially well, Mirage can then use his decoy escape to push the unwitting team from another direction, resulting in a strong push strategy.

It Takes Two

Ultimately, the best duos will be the characters that players are the most comfortable playing. Good teamwork skills and communication are vital, and choosing legends whose abilities complement one another can only help improve the chances of winning.
