Fortnite has got rid of building. While scrapping the one thing that makes your game unique among a thousand battle royales may seem like a bad idea, players seem to be enjoying it so far. Developer Epic Games has added in a bunch of new movement mechanics to fundamentally change the game for nine days, and one of these in particular has clear Apex Legends influences.

While the parkour is cool, it’s Fortnite’s sliding that feels directly inspired by EA’s rival battle royale. This in turn is taken from Titanfall, but you know what I mean. I get it, Epic. I also think that Apex’s sliding mechanic should be implemented in every game from The Last of Us to Stardew Valley, because it’s the most fun thing to do in any video game.

Before Fortnite slid onto the copycat train, however, Call of Duty: Warzone added redeployment towers that straight up ripped off Apex’s balloons. A modern-day shooter could have had all manner of devices to launch you into the air, but instead Activision landed on ziplines, the exact same thing that Apex Legends has. I’d take it as a compliment! Well done Respawn, you must be doing something right if your rivals are copying you. But in turn, could Apex take something back from the likes of Fortnite and Warzone?

Fortnite And Warzone Have Copied Apex Legends, So What Could Apex Copy Back 4

What’s the crux of Fortnite now that building has been taken away? Character crossovers? Apex Legends players have been requesting crossover skins for a while now - either references to Titanfall characters, or characters that EA already has the license for, like Star Wars. As much as I’d love to see Gibraltar in the bright orange X-Wing pilot jumpsuit or Loba with her plaits in little buns like Princess Leia, this wouldn’t make any meaningful difference in Apex, wouldn’t impact the gameplay in any way, and could be a slippery slope to hundreds more collabs with Marvel, DC, or whatever blockbuster flick is the flavour of the month.

What I’d like to see Apex Legends take from Fortnite are the live events. The last one to happen in EA’s battle royale happened so quickly and without any fanfare that I almost missed it. I don’t need Travis Scott or Ariana Grande to turn up, but I’d love to see a map-wide event that unites warring players across the map. Remember when Mad Maggie crashed a ship into Kings Canyon, fundamentally altering the map for the new season? Imagine if we’d have seen that in-game, rather than in a trailer. We could have been dodging debris on Olympus as Season 12 kicked off, and who knows what the future holds.

Fortnite has ascended from a battle royale to a social space, and live events were a part of that evolution. Let’s see something mega hit Storm Point in Season 13, please.

Fortnite And Warzone Have Copied Apex Legends, So What Could Apex Copy Back 2

As for Warzone, it’s very similar to Apex in a lot of ways. Modifiable guns in Warzone are mirrored by Apex’s attachments. Armour plates? Shield cells. Gas masks? Heat shields. Rebirth Island? Control. So what does Warzone have that Apex could ever want?

I vote for Contracts. You can find these challenges all over Verdansk in Warzone, and they give you small missions that help prioritise your rotations and incentivise fighting opponents rather than camping. Some may require you to kill a specific opponent whose approximate location is marked on your map, others tell you to follow a breadcrumb trail of loot boxes, all reward you with cash upon completion.

A cash system would bloat Apex somewhat, but rewarding Crafting Materials could work, or make it similar to Prowlers and Spiders that drop weapon attachments appropriate for what you’re running. Whatever the rewards end up being, in public matches at least, a contract system would incentivise teams employing slightly more careful strategies rather than just running headfirst to third party the nearest fight they see.

Maybe it would be ignored, maybe it would overcomplicate things too much, but rewarding teams who complete them with decent loot could add an extra dimension to matches, especially on maps as big as Storm Point.

Fortnite And Warzone Have Copied Apex Legends, So What Could Apex Copy Back 3

If other battle royales are copying Apex Legends, then Apex should copy right back. I’d love some earth-shattering live events and a well-rounded contract system, but why stop there? Apex would thrive with Escape From Tarkov’s excellent sound design, and I’m still waiting for cross-progression so I can play on my PS5 when I don’t feel like hunching over my desktop. I know I can do that now, but I want my precious cosmetics, duh.

Why stop at battle royales, though? Take inspiration from Dream Daddy and turn the lore comics into full-on dating sims. Add a new mode inspired by Jurassic World: Evolution where you have to create and manage a Prowler theme park or go for something like Lawnmower Simulator and maintain the lawns on Olympus in the role of the Apex Games’ chief gardener. I’m only being semi-serious at this point, but I think all these games could work as spin-offs after Apex Legends’ immense success.

Whatever is coming next to Apex Legends, you can be sure that it will be new, innovative, and push the boundaries of battle royale further. Not everyone will be happy with any changes - nobody ever is - but as long as things stay interesting I’ll be happy. Just promise me you’ll never remove the sliding, Respawn.
