Gibraltar was buffed in the latest Apex Legends patch, but he might also have an ability that players just discovered.
Historically, Gibraltar has been the least-picked character in Apex Legends. His enormous hitbox and flimsy shield made him just flat out worse than smaller, more nimble characters with more relevant abilities.
Respawn Entertainment, developers of Apex Legends, have paid attention to this fact and given Gibraltar a buff in the latest patch. Not only does his gun shield have more hit points to absorb more of the enemy’s incoming fire, but Gibraltar himself now has damage reduction so that his big hitbox isn’t so much of a detriment.
However, an Apex player might have discovered another buff given to Gibraltar that wasn’t in the patch notes. Or, according to other players, it might have been that way all along.
It all has to do with Gibraltar’s gun shield. Reddit user VonArne posted a gif of the “buff” in action to the Apex Legends subreddit, showing Gibraltar’s gun shield catching a thrown Arc Star and then apparently causing that Arc Star to disappear without exploding.
Other Reddit users say that Gibraltar’s shield has actually been that way since launch, and it actually has less to do with his shield than it has to do with a bizarre glitch on the Arc Star itself. Players are reporting that if the Arc Star sticks to an object that disappears, such as a player that has been downed and then disconnects, then the Arc Star disappears as well. Since Gibraltar’s shield operates as an object that appears and disappears at will, it causes the same effect on the Arc Star.
Respawn is definitely aware of the issue, with community manager Jay Frechette commenting: “Thanks guys. Noted and looking into it." We suspect this will be added to the list of issues for the next patch to solve. Until then, it might be time to give Gibraltar a second look.
