Like most shooters, much of Apex Legends' appeal and skill can be traced to its array of weaponry. Having a good literal and metaphorical grasp on the weapons can mean the difference between life and death. And while the current lineup of weapons isn't all that vast compared to some shooters, each weapon featured in Respawn's FPS more-or-less has its own unique feel, mechanics, and perks.

These unique characteristics — not to mention a steady stream of updates — can make weapon mastery a tad tricky to newcomers, and even some vets who have been out of the game for awhile. Thus, having a decent understanding of the various weapons proves crucial, especially in a heated Battle Royale showdown like this.

A Quick Overview Of LMGs

Some of the game's most favored weapons come in the form of the trio of Light Machine Guns (LMGs). These are renowned by players for their power, rate of fire, and overall versatility in battle. They pack a punch and typically prove effective at close or medium range primarily.

At the same time, they can often get the job done at long range when firing in short bursts or in semi-automatic mode, which can help keep these large weapons steady. They act as a sort of middle ground between the beefier Assault Rifles and smaller SMGs.

Now, let's lock and load as we examine each of the 3 LMGs currently in the game:

M600 Spitfire

Apex Legends M600 Spitfire

This weapon is a gas-operated gun manufactured by Jaewon Industries. In some form, it's a carryover from the Frontier War; the prominent conflict during the events of Titanfall.

A next-gen derivation from Titanfall's Spitfire Mk1 and MK2, the M600 is one of the most popular weapons in Apex Legends. There's a reason for this, as this automatic weapon can inflict quite a bit of pain, especially when laced with the right attachments.

Ammo, Reload, And Recoil

The Spitfire uses heavy ammo, and has a magazine capacity of 35 (without the Extended Mag attachment). It has the highest magazine capacity out of any weapon (with a level 3 Extended Heavy Mag).

Its loaded reload time is 2.8 seconds, while its empty reload time is 3.33 seconds. Its rate of fire is 540 RPM (rounds per minute). These numbers are on the low side relatively speaking, as is the speed of drawing and aiming down the sights at walking speed. Still, its high damage-per-shot mitigates some of this.

When firing, the weapon's recoil roughly takes the form of a vertical zigzag, provided the user doesn't fire in short bursts. This pattern becomes even more expansive and sporadic when firing from the hip. Still, it has relatively low recoil overall, which is effective at longer range.

Damage And DPS

The Spitfire deals 19 body damage, 38 headshot damage, and 14 leg shot damage.

It inflicts 171 damage-per-shot on the body, and 342 damage-per-shot at the head.

Attachments

Optics attachments grant weapons more range and precision with their zoom feature. The compatible Optics attachments for this LGM are as follows:

  • 1x Holo
  • 1x HCOG "Classic"
  • 2x HCOG "Bruiser"
  • 1x-2x Variable Holo
  • 3x HCOG "Ranger"
  • 2x-4x Variable AOG

Other attachments the Spitfire can use:

  • Barrel Stabilizer (Common, Rare, Epic, Legendary) — reduces the recoil and pitch when firing.
  • Extended Heavy Mag (Common, Rare, Epic, Legendary) — increases the magazine capacity, and the rarer types also reduce a bit of reload time.
  • Standard Stock (Common, Rare, Epic) — reduces the time it takes to aim down sights, raise/lower time, and aim drift.

Devotion LMG

Apex Legends Devotion LMG

This light machine gun is another potent automatic weapon, though it has a number of differences compared to the prior entry. The Devotion LMG runs on energy ammo, and has a unique accelerating fire rate the more it's fired. The weapon also behaves a bit more like a sniper rifle with its steady recoil and sharp accuracy.

It has tremendous potential when augmented with attachments, though it's rather dicey without them.

Ammo, Reload, And Recoil

As mentioned, this LMG uses energy ammo, and has a relatively high base magazine capacity of 36. Of course, this is bumped up when equipped with the Extended Energy Mag. Its rate of fire is also distinct on account of its acceleration feature — beginning at 300 RPM and eventually revving up to a sky-high 900.

Its reload speed and ADS (aiming down sights) are also rather sluggish. Still, these can be mitigated somewhat with attachments.

Its recoil is pretty wild at its default state, so a Barrel Stabilizer is greatly recommended here. The recoil path takes on a vertical left/right curve when firing.

Damage And DPS

The Devotion deals 16 body damage, 32 headshot damage, and 12 leg shot damage.

It inflicts 80-240 damage-per-shot on the body — depending on its current rate of fire.

Attachments

  • 1x Holo
  • 1x HCOG "Classic"
  • 2x HCOG "Bruiser"
  • 1x-2x Variable Holo
  • 3x HCOG "Ranger"
  • 2x-4x Variable AOG
  • Hop-Up: Turbocharger - Mitigates the charge-up requirement of the weapon, wiping away the fire delay and increasing its rate of fire.
  • Barrel Stabilizer (Common, Rare, Epic )
  • Extended Heavy Mag (Common, Rare, Epic, Legendary)
  • Standard Stock (Common, Rare, Epic)

L-STAR EMG

Apex Legends L-Star EMG

This plasma energy gun marks one of the very first additions to Apex Legends after its release in February of 2019. This season 2 inclusion was one among many additions and tweaks implemented to keep gamers coming back.

This machine gun proves quite distinct even amongst other energy weapons in the game.

The weapon was designed by the Lastimosa Armory, hence the prolonged tag — "LaSTimosa ARmory Energy Machine Gun." Its blasts of plasma can pack a punch and eat away at shields and dense materials with little effort.

It comes with an "overheat" mechanic that takes a bit of getting used to — though this is balanced out by its infinite magazine size.

Ammo, Reload, And Recoil

As mentioned, this weapon also runs on energy ammo, which can be fired continuously until it overheats after 22 continuous shots. The overheat mechanic replaces any need to reload, so any delay hinges on the rate and pacing of fire.

Projectile speed is fairly slow, though it does fire large projectiles at a swift rate.

Its recoil is similarly distinct in that it kicks left on the first couple of shots. It then begins to drift in a vaguely vertical path from then on as it's continually fired.

Damage And DPS

The L-STAR deals 18 body damage, 36 headshot damage, and 14 leg shot damage.

Its body DPS stands at a solid 180.

Attachments

Being a one-of-a-kind weapon with some pretty solid base stats, the L-STAR's capacity for attachments are pretty limited. They are as follows:

  • 1x Holo
  • 1x HCOG "Classic"
  • 2x HCOG "Bruiser"
  • 1x-2x Variable Holo
  • 3x HCOG "Ranger"
  • 2x-4x Variable AOG
  • Standard Stock (Common, Rare, Epic)
