A new creature has begun to inhabit King's Canyon ahead of the upcoming season 2 update for Apex Legends. These dragon-like creatures, known in-game as Flyers, are a surprising addition to the game; like the Octane jump pads in pre-season one, Flyers have been added to the map without any prior warning, allowing players to discover the creatures on their own.

As it turns out, Flyers are actually pretty useful little creatures, and finding them can reward you with valuable loot for you and your squad. If you want to get an edge on the competition, here is everything you need to know about Flyers.

Where Are They?

At the start of each game, multiple Flyers will spawn around the map in random areas. More will spawn throughout the match, so it is good to always keep an eye out for them. Flyers do not currently show up on the map in the way other randomly placed objects like air drops and supply ships do, though this does not mean they are impossible to track.

Flyers will occasionally screech to draw your attention to the sky, which makes them easier to hunt. They also fly in a circular path, so if you happen to catch a glimpse of one, it isn't difficult to estimate the direction it's traveling in. If you see or hear one in the distance, it can be beneficial to pop open your map and try to anticipate where it will be heading. With some luck, you'll be able to beat it there and grab the loot.

How Do You Kill Them?

In order to get the loot that Flyers carry, you'll need to shoot them. Any gun will do (or Arc Star if you're a showoff). The beasts have 250 health, but good news for animal lovers: it isn't actually necessary to kill them in order to get the loot.

As soon as you shoot at the Flyer, it will begin to fly away, making it more difficult to hit. Once you've put some more damage into the little guy, somewhere around 150, the Flyer will drop the loot and continue to fly away. At that point, you can continue shooting and kill it if you must, but why would you want to go and do a thing like that, sicko?

What Do You Get From Looting Them?

The box that lands on the ground will look identical to the death boxes you come across in the game in every way except one: the name on the box will belong to someone on your friends list! If you don't have any friends, we're really sorry, but as a consolation, the death boxes will display the name of one of the developers. It's a fun detail, but frankly speaking, we're here for what's inside the box, not on the lid.

These unique death boxes contain every imaginable combination of weapons and equipment. The box will be color coded blue, purple, or gold based on the highest quality item inside, just like normal death boxes, making it easier to decide if it's worth giving up your position to collect whatever might be inside. We've discovered purple helmets and armor in the same box, Mastiff's and Krubers, and even the occasional golden gun.

Team Work Makes The Dream Work

The Flyers are fully integrated into the ping system that Apex Legends is famous for. Pinging a Flyer will highlight it for your team and trigger a voice line from your character to let your squad know one is nearby. Mirage by far has the best lines, as usual. Now you can all stop pinging Mozambique and ping some helpful flying slot machines instead.

The Most Important Question: Can You Ride Them?

While your favorite robo-buddy Pathfinder can grapple to them, he can't just attach to them and go for a ride, and the zip line definitely doesn't work. While we would all love to re-enact our favorite scene from Goblet of Fire, it would appear that, at least for the moment, our dreams will only be dreams.

There was some speculation when Flyers were first discovered that it might be possible to land on one at the beginning of the match, but that theory has been disproven. That hasn't stopped fans from taking matters into their own hands.

There are big things planned for season 2 of Apex Legends, and if these new Flyers are any indication, fans are going to be getting exactly the type of balance shifting content they were hoping for. Initial reactions to the new character, Wattson, have been very positive. The content drought is coming to an end, and it is an exciting time to be an Apex Legends player.
