The wait is finally over. Respawn has announced the release of Season 3: Meltdown. It arrives October 1st with the new legend, Crypto, as well as a host of other changes.

To kick things off for the upcoming season of Apex Legends, Respawn accompanied its announcement Tweet with an explosive new video, "Forever Family," showing off Crypto's intense backstory.

The action-packed animation introduces the new character, whose life appears to be fraught with tragedy. He and Mila, who is presumably his sister, discover an algorithm that predicts which champion will win the Apex Games. Although Mila alludes to using the algorithm to their advantage, the discovery instead sparks a dangerous series of events.

Crypto wakes up to learn Mila has been abducted during the night and soon finds out there's a hit on his life. He narrowly avoids death and goes into hiding, changing his identity and living life in the shadows, silently waiting for his revenge.

Season 2 of Apex Legends brought about a new Ranked Mode, cosmetics, map changes, a new weapon, and the French-accented engineer Wattson. Season 3 looks to expand upon these additions, with emphasis on adapting the successful Ranked Mode playlist. Along with Crypto, here is everything that we can expect:

  • Season 3, just like the previous two, will feature its own battle pass with over 100 exclusive items to unlock.
  • Players will experience a "soft reset" in ranking, meaning that everyone will be moving 1.5 tiers down. An Apex Predator, for example, will start at Platinum II.
  • RP will also work differently – Respawn will "10x" points in order to create a more "granular" system. Assists and multipliers are also going to play a different role this season.
  • A new weapon, the Charge Rifle, will debut. Respawn describes it as an "obliterating directed-energy weapon."
  • The game will grant rewards based on player rank. Those in Platinum and above will receive weapon charms, with players in Diamond and above receiving custom dive trails.
  • Respawn also states, "More to be revealed before Meltdown begins – come back soon." It wouldn't be surprising if they have a few map changes coming as well.

It seems that the long-standing rumor about Crypto being the next playable character in Apex Legends is officially confirmed. Players can expect to play the Korean "hacker-type" immediately upon Season 3's launch on October 1st.

As an aside, in "Forever Family," the graffiti on the dumpster that Crypto lands beside reads, "Mozambique is Trash."
