Apple Arcade games have been labeled by Apple as being "exclusives" yet some will still be available on other platforms. How does that work?

Apple Arcade has arrived on iOS and for the most part, we are big fans of what we have seen so far. That might have something to do with the fact we are still not paying for the service. Come back and ask us how we feel about it once this one-month free trial is over, then you'll know how we really feel.

We know Apple is pretty new to the game sphere, especially when it comes to a project like Apple Arcade, but it really should familiarize itself with the industry's terminology. Many of the games available via the new subscription service are being advertised as "exclusive to Apple Arcade." However, as has since been pointed out by 9to5Mac, that is not strictly true.

There are titles playable via Apple Arcade that will also be released on PC and consoles. Titles that have been advertised by Apple as being exclusive to its new service. Turns out Apple's definition of exclusive is different from everyone else's. When it says games are exclusive, it means within the realms of mobile gaming. So really, it just means that the titles won't be released on Android.

Not only does this mean that Apple is playing fast and loose with the definition of exclusive, but it is also doing so with the word mobile. Although most consoles are not mobile, the Nintendo Switch most definitely is. Sayonara: Wild Hearts will be available on Apple Arcade and Switch. Can it really be considered an Apple Arcade exclusive in that case?

Although we don't entirely agree with Apple's use of the word exclusive in this instance, it isn't the end of the world. It's being used as a way of letting consumers know that Apple Arcade games will not, and presumably never, be available on Android. They also won't be available in the regular app store. You'll have to subscribe to Apple Arcade in order to play them. Or, you know, purchase them on a PC or console.
