Compile Heart, the developer behind the adorable anime-inspired Arc of Alchemist, will be releasing the game worldwide for the PlayStation 4 in early 2020.

Compile Heart is a Japanese video game developer that was formed as a subsidiary of Idea Factory in June of 2006. Since its founding, it has gone on to develop critically acclaimed games like Record of Agarest War, Hyperdimension Neptunia, Fairy Fencer F, and Moe Chronicle. When the developer released Arc of Alchemist in Japan on February 7, 2019 many consumers and critics alike expected a Western release to follow soon afterward. While the developer had originally planned to release the game in both North America and Europe in a physical and digital format, multiple delays would cause the company to rethink its plans. Now, after even more delays, the developers' parent company Idea Factory has posted an announcement trailer which reveals that the game will be coming to the west on the PS 4 sometime in early 2020.

It's hard to imagine that a developer with as much backing as Compile Heart would have a problem with localizing any game, but it's clear that they severely underestimated the amount of time that localization would take. Regardless of how the game performs, this experience could change the way that both Idea Factory and Compile Heart handle the localization process going forward.

Information related to the game's release can be found via Idea Factory International's official YouTube channel, where it is revealed that an official English language website has already been created for the game. The trailer is relatively short, but it gives us a glimpse at certain gameplay mechanics, including the ability to explore hidden areas of the map using special abilities. Additionally, we see a colorful and detailed overlay which gives information on each party members health and magic, as well as their current level. While Arch of Alchemist has a similar combat system to that of other hack-and-slash RPGs currently on the market, it separates itself by allowing the player to participate in city building. Pre-orders for the game are currently unavailable, but given that it's slated for release in early 2020 we can expect to see it appear on the PlayStation Store very soon.

Given that the game is going to be digital-only, Compile Heart and Idea Factory will have to come up with a price that will entice most users to try out the game. It has separated itself from other RPGs in both style and mechanics, but more gameplay trailers will need to be released in order for the company to capture the attention of the West.
