25 Memes Are Coming

There are few things better than a Game of Thrones and Arrow mashup.

Thankfully, Arrow star Stephen Amell has a massive and extremely active fan base that not only help him raise money for his various charities, but they post little gems on his wall, like this mash-up of him and Ned Stark (played by actor Sean Bean) from Game of Thrones. Is it me, or did you read it in Ned Stark’s voice too?

Stephen Amell (who plays Oliver Queen, aka the Green Arrow) is far more than a pretty face and ripped muscles.

Stephen is a family man and a philanthropist with a passion for kicking cancer’s butt, drawing awareness and raising funds for a bunch of worthy charities. He even helped to plan a one-day charity comic con in Orlando, FL in response to the Pulse shooting to raise money for the One Orlando Fund, which helped the victims’ families with medical and other expenses. He’s also a winemaker and king of #MemeMonday and #FanArtFriday, in which his fans craft amazing works of art and snarky memes to post on his profile.

24 Arrowbics

How does Stephen Amell get those muscles? He makes all that fighting, parkour and stunt work look so easy! If we’re being honest, all of Team Arrow looks remarkably fit. You can tell they take their fitness for their respective roles very seriously. Most actors that are in extremely active roles schedule daily workouts to keep their physique consistent throughout the show as well as maintain the muscle and endurance to continuously kick butt day in and day out. Many of these workouts are one to five hours a day depending on their available time (Here I am barely able to get through a half hour workout, let alone five hours!).

So, it stands to reason that the team would use any means available to them to help them with their fitness goals. Even if it means pulling out ridiculous 80s aerobic workout videos! Obviously, the TV in this photo has been photoshopped for the purpose of the meme but it’s still hilarious to think that the Green Arrow could put on short shorts and do 80s power aerobics with Richard Simmons. I think that even an actor as talented as Stephen Amell would have a hard time keeping a straight face!

23 Coincidence? I Think Not.

Many Arrowverse fans don’t realize all the little cameos and very deliberate casting choices that are made to give diehard fans some extra enjoyment. One of the greatest things about the shows are all the cast members in the Arrowverse that have been a part of the DC Comics family before. Barry Allen’s (The Flash) father, Dr. Henry Allen, is played by John Wesley Shipp who played the scarlet speedster in the 1990’s Flash TV show alongside Mark Hamill as the Trickster (who also reprised his role for the CW’s Flash during its first season).

Supergirl tends to have more actor cameos and nods than the other Arrowverse shows. For example, her adopted father is played by Dean Cain (who played the caped crusader in the show Lois and Clark), Teri Hatcher (who played Lois Lane in Lois and Clark) also appeared in Supergirl as Rhea, Kara’s villainous aunt and Smallville stars Laura Vandervoort (Kara Zor-El) and Erica Durance (Lois Lane) have made appearances as well. There are few references that are as blatant as this one. Ray Palmer (played by Brandon Routh) comments that Supergirl looks exactly like his cousin. This wouldn’t surprise anyone considering the whole Arrowverse is rife with doppelgangers, but Routh played Superman in the 2006 movie Superman Returns which is perfect because Kara is Superman’s cousin.

22 We Are Annoyed

Diehard fans of The Flash have had a love-hate (but mostly the latter) relationship with Barry Allen’s wife, Iris West-Allen. She has been the source of scrutiny by fans for her new leadership role in Team Flash and her knack for overdramatic, unnecessary pep talks and overly cautious calls during missions.

Many fans believe that the Flash would be better off with literally any other woman in the show but Iris.

During the last episode of this most recent season, Barry is struggling with wanting to go face the Thinker alone to protect his friends. Iris steps up and assures him that the team is stronger together with a speech ending in, “We are the Flash.” Other than having flashbacks to Guardians of the Galaxy, this phrase completely irked fans. This unfortunate line has become the source of crazy anti-Iris memes that are spreading across the web. This one comments on the fact that Oliver Queen might have a little too much stake in making Iris have an unfortunate accident and allow Barry to find the fan’s favorite romantic choice, Officer Patty, again. To be honest, it would be nice to bring Patty back for a bit now that the dynamics have shifted for Team Flash.

Okay, I might be the only one, but I LOVE edgy Felicity Smoak. The beautiful, brainy blonde certainly has gone through some major life changes from her darker hacktivist look to the blonde curls and heels of corporate America. We all have periods in our life where we’re not proud of how we looked then, even if what we were wearing was cool for the time. Dark Felicity, not so much! I love how striking and intense she looks in that photo. Many fans loved the idea of a darker Felicity and were able to see her in action in a few (all too brief!) flashback scenes of her hacktivist past.

Although I do feel it is a little harsh for Oliver to smoke Felicity (get it?!) for her edgier wardrobe in her younger, more angry years when he clearly wasn’t always so style savvy,  especially for a billionaire’s son, as shown in the picture on the top right corner of the meme. He kind of gives off a creepy “I’m going to turn you into an undead creature of the night and leave you in the streets” vibe in that photo. Which isn’t exactly on par Oliver Queen’s reputation for being a bit of a ladies man in his pre-island days.

20 The Chosen One

It was so cool to see Tom Felton, who plays the snotty Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter Series, come to The Flash. In the Harry Potter series, Draco Malfoy is the same age as Harry Potter but is constantly jealous of all the fame and special attention Harry gets during their time at Hogwarts. Draco joins the Dark Lord’s forces against Harry but ultimately decides that life isn’t really for him and redeems his character.

Felton is such an amazing actor and he brought such an interesting layer to The Flash series. He played Julian Albert, who was the head CSI of a task force that would work on crimes involving metahumans. Julian was never a huge fan of the Flash or Barry for that matter, and their tense relationship added another layer of stress to Barry’s life. That is until Julian gets into trouble and Team Flash must work with him to get things straightened out. Julian finds out Barry is the Flash and that’s when things get really interesting. I guess he really does have a thing against lightning bolts as this meme so hilariously points out.

19 Prison Break

I dare you to find a more tough and witty current TV duo than Wentworth Miller (Captain Cold) and Dominic Purcell (Heatwave). These gents have been in multiple shows together outside of the Arrowverse including Fox Network's Prison Break. In Fox’s action drama, they play brothers that both land themselves in jail where they subsequently break out and uncover a government conspiracy. In The Flash, they aren’t related, but they are a crime duo and are as close as brothers. One is fire and one is ice, with complicated personalities to top it off.

Captain Cold and Heatwave are the criminals you hate to love.

This meme pokes fun at the fact that no matter what jail the crime duo finds themselves in (regardless of the show) it never seems to hold them for long. Which is a good thing, because both Captain Cold and Heatwave jump from The Flash to become Legends on Legends of Tomorrow and bring a sense of suave mischief to the time traveling group. It makes it that much harder when Captain Cold wins over Sara's heart only to sacrifice himself to save everyone. He was a true hero in the end.

18 Face Palm

There is nothing more frustrating in The Flash than when any speedster goes back in time and messes with the timeline. They never know what effects they will have on time when they get back to the present and more often than not, situations are worse (or just completely opposite!) of what they were before. Only the speedster that did the changing remembers the original timeline and it would be really weird for them to have two sets of memories. Almost every speedster has tried to mess with time or attempts to, but Barry time travels more than any other speedster in the show.

Barry Allen had this weird obsession for a few seasons with going back in time to change the past. When he gets back he realizes all the things he unintentionally changed, like Diggle having a son instead of a daughter or Cisco’s brother being taken out, and he instantly regrets his decision to go back. He doesn’t seem to learn from his mistakes though, as he consistently talks about going back in time or actually doing so to try to change what he wants. Against the advice of literally every other speedster in the show, I might add. Oh, Barry. Will you ever learn?

17 Lightning Fast Abs

There’s nothing more difficult than the path to be a hero. You have to train hours a day and constantly focus and work on your goals. You eat, sleep, dream your goals until you reach them. It’s a very grueling, sweaty, painful process. Unless you are Barry Allen that is.

In the show, we watch Oliver Queen and the rest of Team Arrow working out on the salmon ladder, lifting weights and sparring. In The Flash, Barry gets struck by a lightning bolt when the particle accelerator at S.T.A.R. Labs explodes and he gets knocked into a coma. When he wakes up, he has chiseled abs and is literally lighting fast! In real life, actor Grant Gustin who plays Barry works out for hours a day just like his fellow actors to maintain his flashy frame. So, don’t worry, fellow heroes! The Flash may like us to believe that it takes no work to keep up his physical endurance, but we all know the truth!

16 I Am No Man!

There is so much girl power in the CW shows! The first to start this trend was Sara Lance aka White Canary. She was actually given the name “Canary” by Ra’s Al Ghul during her time with the League and after she passed away the first time, her sister Laurel Lance took up her mask and became the Black Canary. After Sara was resurrected via the Lazarus pit, she made the decision to try to atone for her past crimes and christened herself the White Canary as a representation of who she wanted to become. It's a noble pursuit and a lot of fans really took to the storyline.

Sara is a skilled fighter and has a quick wit. She’s smart, tough and doesn’t take crap from anyone. Anytime the villains show up to cause trouble, she wipes the floor with them and is able to defend until help arrives or until she's the last one standing - whichever comes first! All the bad guys in the Arrowverse know better than to underestimate Sara by now.  She's by far one of the strongest characters in the universe and a definite asset for the good guys of the world.

15 Brotherly Love

via screenrant.com

Aw. Tommy! Tommy Merlyn was one of the most loved minor characters when Arrow first started out. He was also a billionaire playboy and was Oliver’s best bud. His father, Malcolm Merlyn, was always in a bit of a friendly but professional rivalry with Oliver’s father when the boys were growing up. Little did anyone know that Malcolm and Oliver’s mother had a sordid affair a few years after Oliver was born which produced Oliver’s younger sister, Thea Queen. They kept the secret of Thea’s father from everyone, including Thea herself.

Long ago, Oliver had made Tommy promise to look after Thea if anything bad were to ever happen to him. When Oliver became shipwrecked and everyone thought he had passed away, Tommy kept his promise and tried his best to keep Thea out of trouble. She didn’t really make the best choices and Tommy had to constantly try to help her out of bad situations. This meme is funny because, at the time of the quote, no one, not even the fans, knew they were siblings. In hindsight, this charged moment is actually extremely funny (especially since Tommy comments to Oliver in a flashback about how ‘hot’ Thea is becoming!).

14 Dang it, Barry!

During his phase of wanting to continuously go back in time (to be honest, it never really goes away, he just has other things to think about) Barry ends up creating alternate timelines. The first timeline was called Flashpoint, where he went back and saved his mother from being taken out when he was young, and he grew up with his parents and lived a fairly normal life. However, he didn’t become close to his true love Iris West and he didn’t have a relationship with any of his close friends. He watched as disaster after disaster unfolded because he wasn’t the Flash, so he decides to fix the timeline back. Little does he know at the time that just because he goes back and stops his other self from saving his mother, not quite everything goes back to how it was.

No matter how many times he goes back in time, something(s) will be changed and not always for the better.

Many fans think that the seasons that rely heavily on Barry going back in time just to unintentionally ruin the timeline are lazy. However, it’s always interesting to see how the timeline is ruined and Team Flash’s desperate efforts to fix whatever it is.

13 Doppelgangers

It's easy to forget sometimes that our favorite superheroes are just actors playing a part. Many actors have played more than one hero in the span of their career. Some have even played heroes that appear in the same universe! This is always a tricky thing to work around for studios. You want a specific actor for this role, but they've already been established as a different hero. Many can make the transitions easy enough like Brandon Routh, who plays Ray Palmer/The Atom on the CW and was Superman on the big screen due to the different mediums, or Ryan Reynolds who was Green Lantern and is now currently playing the role of Deadpool where he is able to use makeup and prosthetics as well as the mask to help disguise his face.

However, the transition isn’t always easy for fans and it can create minor backlash for the studios. Chris Evans as Captain America and Human Torch, anyone?

This entertaining meme is sarcastically blaming Barry Allen’s time travel obsession for the actor changes in the heroes. Knowing Barry, he probably did mess something up. Just kidding!

12 Shut Up, Iris!

Oh, Iris. While I don't mind her as a character, and I love Candice Patton who plays her, the writers of Arrowverse really love to give her the most obnoxious lines sometimes.

As I mentioned earlier, her most recent episode with her "We are the Flash" line to Barry has awoken the frustration of fans who are anti-Iris. They are usually team SnowBarry, who were rooting for Barry and his friend Caitlin Snow to end up together. It would've been pretty cool to explore that relationship, but anyone that has read the comics will know that he was destined to end up with Iris. The shows and comics don't always need to align, which we've seen over on Arrow with their relationships, but this one makes a bunch of sense and fans shouldn't be all that upset. Also, you never know what could happen in the future!

This devoted fan definitely hit the nail on the head with the crazy Iris shenanigans by throwing her own line back in her face!

11 Oh my Thor...

The Marvel versus DC rivalry will exist until the end of time. Personally, I’m an equal opportunity comic book fan. I like and read, both franchises. Which is why this meme tickles me at my core. What if the two universes collided and Thor accidentally (or on purpose) used the particle accelerator to enhance his lightning and created the Flash to help keep an eye on the world while he’s away. Thor can’t always be on earth and, with how little the other Avengers seem to try to keep in touch with him, it would make sense that he would want to make sure that his adopted home was taken care of while he is in Asgard.

Of course, it would be impossible for the God of Thunder to create the fastest man alive, but it’s kind of fun to think about all the possibilities if Marvel and DC would merge for a brief crossover.

In the meantime, Oliver might be a little closer to the truth than he thinks, considering the speed force is often shown to have a consciousness and is able to communicate in its own way to the speedsters that use it.

10 =That's Cold

Cisco Ramon is by far one of the best characters in the Arrowverse. He’s a genius with the ability to create breaches in space and time and is able to “vibe” with other people through touching something they owned. He also has the self-appointed job of naming all the metahumans that surface and he has a wicked sense of humor.

When Barry comes back from “fixing” Flashpoint, he unintentionally gave his friend, Caitlin Snow, metahuman powers. Her powers manifested as an alter ego, Killer Frost, in a kind of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde type scenario. Caitlin now has the ability to manipulate ice and water molecules around her to form any type of ice or snow attack she can come up with. However, as the seasons continue, Caitlin is able to get Killer Frost on the same side and she ends up joining Team Flash to take out the bad guys.

Considering Killer Frost is also a platinum blonde with a taste for icy blue (but edgy chic!) clothing, Cisco tries to lighten the mood on an otherwise frosty situation, but Caitlin isn’t very amused. Well Cisco, we’re amused. We get you.

9   Cat's Out Of The Bag...

The crossover events are the best episodes. There really isn't anything better than watching all your favorite heroes team up together in an epic mini story and kick butt! The Arrowverse tends to have epic crossovers once a season and they generally combine all the storylines for one giant mission.

So many people point out the flawed logic that the Legends constantly change the timeline and nothing really happens in the grand universe. But every time Barry changes the timeline, everything messes up. The exception to this is that in one of the crossover episodes, a baby dominator (an alien race with advanced technology and mind control) is released to its mother by the Legends in 1988 and an invasion of Earth ends up happening in the present. The Legends seek the help of the other heroes to help combat the impending invasion.

What better way to point out the hilarity in this situation than Drax from Guardians of the Galaxy! His knack for pointing out the obvious makes this is such a great 'oh! Snap!' moment in an otherwise fairly serious conversation.

8 She's Just Like Everyone Else

Sometimes it sucks to be the only major hero in the Arrowverse that doesn't have any actual superpowers.  When everyone else in the crossover suit up for battle, Oliver is left to get dressed the old-fashioned way.  Supergirl and the Flash have heightened speed and are super fast, so they can get dressed in the blink of an eye and the Legends don't necessarily need their suits (other than the Atom of course) to use their powers. Although if they do need to suit up, they will be able to make Oliver feel better for being so averagely slow.

Don't worry Oliver, you're a total bamf and could give any of these super-powered heroes a run for their money. You're like Hawkeye with the Avengers, except you're a lot more interesting and liked. You trained Barry for goodness sake! Besides, if he got some kryptonite like they did in the comics he'd be able to battle with Supergirl.

Although, rumor has it that Batwoman will be joining the Arrowverse in the next season or so.  If so, there will be another non-superpowered hero to the list and maybe Oliver won't feel so alone.

7 Mic Drop!

Lena Luthor is ruthless, but not in a villainous way (At least not yet!). While the writers do dance around whether Lena will take the road of her brother Lex Luthor and become another evil villain set on destroying our Kryptonian heroes, so far she seems to still be on the side of good. Lena helps Supergirl with almost every major story arc villain and they face them together.  They currently worked together to save their friend Sam from her hidden alter ego, Reign, who is a Kryptonian world killer bent on bringing her dark version of order and justice through fear.

Lena is brilliant, tough and has a sharp tongue.

She works so hard to overcome her family's dark history, but sometimes that Luthor spirit comes out in the most awesome ways.  Like this little exchange where Lena totally wins by showing she's by far the baddest lady in town. No fear. No hesitation.  You go, girl!

6 Wrong show!

Rip Hunter seems to have taken his fashion cues from other time travelers - the Time Lords.  Or rather the Time Lord, the Doctor.

The Doctor is from the wildly popular BBC series Doctor Who, which the actor that plays Rip Hunter, Arthur Darvill also starred in, alongside Matt Smith (pictured left). In Doctor Who, the Doctor is part of a race called the Time Lords that watch and protect all of space and time.  They strive for peace in the universe and end up being kind of like the universal police.  The Doctor is the last of the Time Lords and he travels and has adventures with different companions throughout time and space.

I think that the writers and costume designers of the CW are big fans of the Doctor Who universe considering the number of small nods they do. Rip Hunter's outfit is definitely the most blatant example, but I think Darvill pulls the look off quite nicely. If he looked bad in the coat, that would be on thing, but he looks pretty dashing, so we'll let it go.
