This week was great for Assassin's Creed fans, with yesterday's Ubisoft Forward confirming that multiple new projects are in development. Assassin's Creed Infinity will be a live service, getting content updates that add new areas. On top of this, there's Assaisns's Creed: Codename Jade, a mobile game, and Mirage, a small-scale solo release. This is definitely a new path for the series, straying from its usual release format.
This, however, isn't great news for fans of older Assassin's Creed titles. As well as moving away from traditional non-service games, Ubisoft has confirmed that it has no plans to remake the first game, despite many hoping otherwise. It says that it's "fully dedicated" to other projects, with no remake of older titles in sight.
Speaking to Eurogamer, art director Jean-Luc Sala was asked about the rumours that a remake is on the way, possibly in the form of an expansion for Infinity or Mirage.
"Yeah that's not what we're doing", Sala responded. "I'm fully dedicated to [Assassin's Creed] Mirage and I can tell you we are not remaking AC1."
While some may believe it's in development anyway, it's not likely. Sala dismissed the claim quite definitively, and Ubisoft has more than enough to keep itself busy with right now. Infinity will receive ongoing support as a live service, with two campaigns already announced. Then there's Codename Jade and Mirage - and that's not even getting into the final DLC for Valhalla. It's hard to believe that there's any more room for other AC titles right now, so any remakes will likely have to wait until some of these games have launched.
As for the rest of the games, the next one coming up is Mirage, which will be with us at some point in 2023. Jade and Infinity do not have release dates just yet, so we're likely to hear more about them after Mirage launches next year.
