Since introducing the “new” Assassin’s Creed in 2017 with Origins, Ubisoft has been on a roll. Both Origins and Odyssey have been incredibly popular games, with Odyssey remaining one of the twenty best selling games in America since it’s release in October of 2018. Part of this is due to Ubisoft’s investment in the game’s continued stories.

Both the Fates of Atlantis and The Lost Tales of Greece have only been going on for months, continuing to give users reasons to buy the game or return to it over time. But with that finally winding down, it’s time to look towards the future. While this year won’t have an Assassin’s Creed title, next year definitely will. Currently, AC 2020 is codenamed “Kingdom” and is rumored to have Vikings. Here’s a list of what else we’d like to see from it.

10 MORE OF THE ISU

There’s a staunch group of Assassin’s Creed fans who want nothing to do with any story involving the First Civilization. They just want a simple game that allows them to indulge their inner history dork and do cool assassinations while exploring those worlds. And that’s a totally respectable viewpoint. However, if we’re going to keep getting more fantastical because of the introduction of key artifacts, then it’s about time we got to see more of this group. They were even teased during Odyssey as having a big role in the next adventure, and while that could refer to Odyssey’s Fate of Atlantis DLC, it hopefully points to the next stage of AC as well.

9 GENDER OPTIONS

Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey was the first game that featured the opportunity to decide whether the lead character could be a man or a woman. This was the result of years of back and forth with Ubisoft, all of which started with a “designing a woman’s animation would be twice as much work”, then led to them giving us a secondary protagonist in Syndicate before finally just allowing us to choose between characters in Odyssey. But that worked out incredibly well, as Kassandra and Alexios both felt unique even though they were going through the same story, largely because of the great voice acting and animation. More of this for the sequel would be absolutely delightful.

8 MORE ROMANCE

With Odyssey, the game was positively stuffed with hook-up options. The player could enjoy flings with tons of people for reasons that could be romantic or even humorous. And while occasionally these actions resulted in some change later on, mostly this was all consequence-free fun.

Not that this should go away, but it would be nice if the story introduced the options for one true loves instead of just having another two dozen flings players can check off a list. Even if it is simply one male and one female option, that would be a welcome change.

7 A CUSTOMIZABLE SHIP

What’s a Viking without a ship? While the last game placed the Misthios in charge of the Adrestia and her crew, that was more of a way to traverse the lands than a major part of the game. It helped the player travel, then much like on a horse occasionally you had to fight someone. But if Kingdom is going to continue with the ship motif, they should offer something new. Though it shouldn’t be mandatory, players should be allowed to customize both the outward and inward appearance of the ship to make it theirs.

6 A RECRUITABLE CREW

If you’re going to have a ship, then you must have a crew. Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey allowed players to recruit their own crew, but they weren’t terribly important. In practice, it just meant anyone you didn’t kill in combat could be invited back to the ship to work for the Misthios. While a fun feature, it’d be more unique if there could be some stories attached to each member of the crew. Allow us to assemble our own customized crew as we please.

5 MORE FANTASTICAL COMBAT

While Origins kept the gameplay largely realistic until the end of the game where Bayek wielded a blade that was constantly on fire, Odyssey didn’t even try to make what it could do realistic. The Misthios’ most realistic ability is Spartan Kicking people across a field. But they were also able to hit eight people with arrows at the same time, make flaming arrows rain from the sky, and turn invisible for brief periods of time. Don’t pull away from that just because we’re no longer using Leonidas’ spear. This franchise is an RPG now, and there’s nothing wrong with owning up to what that comes with.

4 THE NINE REALMS

If we’re going to be playing as Vikings, that means Norse mythology has to be involved at some point. If that’s the case, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be able to travel through all of the nine realms. Yes, God of War did it back in 2018, but by the time this game comes out we’ll be two years and six months removed from that. Viewing AC’s version of Asgard, Valhalla, and other realms in Norse mythology would be a great form of DLC if not something that shouldn’t outright be included within the main title.

3 RPG ELEMENTS

Every franchise needs a refresher at some point. For Ubisoft and Assassin’s Creed, adding on RPG elements has gone a long way towards both helping the franchise get a makeover and bringing in new fans. The different combat, the leveling up, the dialogue trees, customizing the builds, all of these things have worked in the game’s favor.

This is less a request to add something and instead a plea that none of this is taken out to go back to how Assassin’s Creed was prior to Origins. Syndicate very clearly wanted to push towards this direction, and considering Odyssey has been a massive success for the company, they should enjoy this rather than tear away.

2 ONE-HIT ASSASSINATIONS

All the RPG-esque additions to the game have been great. But there’s one thing Odyssey did that needs to be undone, and pronto. The inability to get one-hit kills. Yes, there are certain things players can do with their builds and max out their damage to make it almost a guarantee and that’s great. But ultimately none of that matters if you can stab someone in the throat by surprise and they not only survive but can call other soldiers to fight you. At least in Odyssey, the Misthios “wasn’t an assassin”, but there’s no excuse for the future games to continue doing this.

If the game is going to be set during the time of Vikings, there’s little chance we won’t be placed in charge of a Viking group... or at least be invited to join one. If that’s the case, it’s highly unlikely we’ll be the only Viking clan roaming around, raiding and pillaging. Kingdom needs some additional factions which play a role in the game alongside the one the main character is part of. These factions could be adversarial or be ones we could potentially ally ourselves with, but their existing could only help the world become more fleshed out.
