The Assassin's Creed series of games has taken players all over the world and throughout history. We've traveled to Ancient Egypt, Renaissance Italy, the American Revolution, and more as we follow along with the Assassins' goal of stopping the Templars from conquering the world.

Along the way, we've had the chance to play as some truly memorable characters. Whether it's a gang leader in Victorian London or the last protector of the Pharaohs, the player characters of Assassin's Creed always provide fascinating insights into the games' stories and histories. Let's now rank the Assassins from the entire series from worst to best. Fair warning: There are some spoilers included in these breakdowns.

Updated November 27th, 2020 by Hodey Johns: Originally a list of top ten, then top fifteen assassins, the addition of Eivor in Assassin's Creed Valhalla yet again gave us a reason to expand our scope. With thirteen main installments and ten spinoff titles, players are spoiled for riches in terms of selecting assassins. To reflect these choices, we have decided to rank every assassin from every game. There will not be twenty-three entries, as some of these titles share the same protagonist.

19 Eivor Varinsdottir

You might want separate entries for the male and female Eivor, but unlike Kassandra and Alexios, they do not both exist in the universe simultaneously; the presence of one negates the other.

Eivor is, by far, the slowest assassin in the series and is staggered by the whisper of an enemy attack. To top that off, Eivor is really just a pawn, setting up kings (instead of taking them down like other assassins) that eventually drive out the Vikings. In the end, Eivor is dead, the enemy is thriving, and players are left with more questions than answers.

18 Arno Dorian

There are times when Ubisoft stopped caring about actual history in these games, but never have they ignored ongoing history the way Arno Dorian does in Assassins Creed Unity.

Despite a revolution against tyranny, Arno spends his time on a petty revenge quest. His lack of talent and misguided leadership leads to him being fired. Afterward, instead of helping the cause, he becomes a drunk vagrant. Unsurprisingly, the revolutionaries are struck down in large part due to his negligence.

17 Nikolai Orelov

The Assassin's Creed Chronicles series came in three parts, with each release focusing on a different assassin from a different region of the world. Assassin's Creed Chronicles: Russia was set in 1918 and followed Nikolai Orelov, who previously appeared in the comic book Assassin's Creed: The Fall.

Set in the aftermath of the October Revolution, the game sees Nikolai performing one final mission for the Assassin order that sees him witness the massacre of the Tsar's family. Nikolai manages to save Tsar Nicholas II's daughter Anastasia, who shares the memories of the assassin Shao Jun.

16 Shao Jun

Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China is set in 1526, shortly after the animated short Assassin's Creed: Embers, and follows the aforementioned Shao Jun, who was trained by legendary Assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze.

After her training, Shao Jun returns to her homeland to exact revenge on the Templars, taking on the group known as Eight Tigers in particular as they were responsible for killing the Chinese brotherhood of Assassins. Shao goes on to become a mentor to other Assassins and manages to rebuild the brotherhood in China.

15 Arbaaz Mir

Assassin's Creed Chronicles: India is set in 1841 and follows Arbaaz Mir, who appeared in the previously released graphic novel Assassin's Creed: Brahman. This game introduced a variety of new weapons, including the chakram, Dravidian Hindu sword, a concealed Katara, a slingshot, and many others.

After a Master Templar arrives with a stolen Assassin artifact in tow, it's up to Arbaaz to recover the item, find out why his enemy has arrived, as well as keeping his friends and lover safe.

14 Adéwalé

Spoilers ahead! Adéwalé first appeared in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, becoming the focus of the Freedom Cry DLC, before going on to appear in Assassin's Creed Rogue also.

This slave-turned pirate was the quartermaster aboard Edward Kenway's ship, the Jackdaw, before also joining the brotherhood of Assassins. With his sterner, more serious personality, Adéwalé served as a balance for the more jovial and light-hearted character of Edward. Adéwalé went on to become a legendary Assassin, but he was ultimately killed by Shay Cormac in the Colonial Brotherhood purge.

13 Alonzo Batilla

Expecting too much from a character on a mobile game might seem like a mistake, but, as a character, Alonzo holds his own, and those who might find the new Assassin's Creed games to be annoying and boring might prefer this high seas adventure.

Alonzo forms multiple alliances as he takes down some of the most lucrative vessels in the Royal Navy. His adventures end up gaining the attention of almost every naval superpower and securing the Fragment of Eden.

12 Lo Sparviero

Another phone game, Assassin's Creed: Identity, introduced players to Lo Sparviero who is unearthing a huge conspiracy by the crows to kill Leonardo da Vinci and hinder Niccolò Machiavelli. It's mostly killing the usual brainless NPCs, but they are powerful and well-connected.

Perhaps more importantly to us as gamers, the opening threat is against Mario Auditore and his estate, which, if successful, would leave another assassin, Ezio Auditore, down-and-out.

11 Aveline de Grandpre

Aveline was the protagonist of Assassin's Creed III: Liberation and as such was the first playable female Assassin. The game first launched as a PlayStation Vita exclusive in 2012, before releasing as an HD version for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in 2014.

Born to a French merchant and African slave, Aveline had a privileged upbringing but noticed the disparity between her own life and that of those less fortunate than herself. Aveline became dedicated to helping others and when she attempted to rescue a slave, she met the Assassin Agate who then began to train her to become an Assassin herself.

10 Jacob Frye

Jacob Frye, brother to Evie Frye, appeared in Assassin's Creed Syndicate and was crucial in helping to rebuild the Assassins' presence in London. He took on the task of eliminating key Templar figures, such as Crawford Starrick's allies, and building up his Rooks gang.

Jacob was an impulsive and aggressive assassin who cared more about action than espionage. While this attitude sometimes placed him in hot water, he was also good at quickly coming up with solutions to the problems he created, always keeping him one step ahead.

9 Alexios

The grandson of King Leonidas I, Alexios of Assassin's Creed: Odyssey was a skilled warrior who fought during the Peloponnesian War (assuming players chose him at the start of the game). He worked to undermine an early precursor to the Templars - the Cult of Kosmos.

Alexios worked as a mercenary for a good part of his life, though he eventually turned after discovering that his sister has been brainwashed by the Cult of Kosmos. Afterward, he worked to defeat the Cult, venturing across Greece and assassinating their leaders.

8 Bayek of Siwa

Arguably the first proper Assassin, Bayek of Siwa was a Medjay, a protector of the Pharaohs, and appeared in Assassin's Creed Origins. After the murder of his son, he set out on a quest to eliminate those responsible - the Order of the Ancients, an organization that would later evolve into the Templars.

To counteract the Order, Bayek and his wife, Aya, formed the Hidden Ones - an early version of the Assassins. He was also able to eventually get revenge for his son's death as he killed Flavius Metellus, aka the Snake. And this is just the main storyline, even today, players are still appreciating the side quests in the game.

7 Shay Patrick Cormac

Shay Patrick Cormac is an interesting character from the Assassin's Creed series, appearing as the main character of Assassin's Creed Rogue. While he began as an Assassin, after inadvertently causing an earthquake in Lisbon, he defected to the Templars.

Shay's reasoning behind his betrayal was that he could not in good conscience work for an organization that had made him cause such needless death and destruction. This gives rise to the only Assassin's Creed title that flips the story, portraying the Assassins as villains and the Templars as protagonists.

6 Evie Frye

Evie Frye appeared alongside her brother Jacob in Assassin's Creed Syndicate. While Jacob was more focused on taking action to remove Templar influence in London, Evie directed her attentions to attain the Shroud of Eden, a powerful artifact that could not be allowed to fall under Templar control.

While Jacob was reckless and impulsive, Evie was more measured and careful. She fully believed in the teachings of the Brotherhood, valued a quieter and discreet approach than her brother, and used careful planning and clever tactics to achieve her goals.

5 Connor Kenway

Connor Kenway was the protagonist of Assassin's Creed III, a Native American Assassin who lived through the Revolutionary War. The circumstances of his birth were rather unusual, as his father was in fact the major Templar figure, Haytham Kenway.

Connor had a strong desire for justice, born from a personal tragedy in his life, and the will to see it through. Though he did wind up involved in a great many events during the American Revolution, he held to his convictions even when they put him in conflict with allies.

4 Kassandra

Kassandra was sister to Alexios in Assassin's Creed Odyssey and, canonically, the actual protagonist for that installment in the series. Her story mirrors her brother's very closely, as she grew up to become a mercenary in Ancient Greece, setting about dismantling the Cult of Kosmos.

Just like Alexios, Kassandra can save her sibling from the Cult's control, assuming that players have made the right choices. This winding road that players are still learning about leads to a somewhat happy ending for them, as they have a good life with their family away from the conflict and chaos of the main game.

3 Edward Kenway

Edward Kenway appeared in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag as a piratical Assassin who in fact showed a good deal of resistance to becoming an Assassin. Eventually, he did join the order and fought against the British Templars attempting to control the Caribbean.

Though he did become embroiled in the conflict between the two groups, Edward's first and primary goal was largely fame and fortune, which he sought to achieve by finding the fabled Observatory. However, upon losing many friends to this same drive, he resolved to do better and become a better father to his daughter.

2 Altaïr ibn-La'Ahad

Assassin's Creed Altair With Al Mualim

Altaïr ibn-La'Ahad was the very first Assassin we played as in the original Assassin's Creed game. He was a master of his craft, raised by the Brotherhood to combat the Templars, which extended even to eliminating his own teacher, Al Mualim, who had betrayed the Assassins. It was experienced through the lens of an Animus (but, even after all of these games, we still don't fully understand how it works).

Altaïr began his story cold and detached, killing his targets without hesitation or remorse. However, upon listening to the final words of the dying men, he gradually grew as a person, becoming wiser and more self-aware by the time he confronted Al Mualim.

1 Ezio Auditore

Finally, our pick for the number one Assassin from the Assassin's Creed games is Ezio Auditore, the protagonist of Assassin's Creed II and several other titles in the series. Others might be more powerful, but, as a character and personality, no one can touch Ezio. An Italian noble living during the Renaissance, Ezio is set on the path to becoming an Assassin when his father and brothers are executed.

Fleeing the city, Ezio begins hunting and eliminating those responsible for his family's death, unwittingly coming into contact with the Assassins along the way. In time, he is accepted into their order and finally gets justice for his father and brother's deaths.
