Assassin's Creed is a long-running series that Ubisoft has had under its belt since 2007. In fact, if you even see the Ubisoft logo now, chances are Assassin's Creed would be one of the first things to come to mind.

With so many mainline games, DLCs, and spin-offs to account for, there is no shortage of Assassin's Creed to go around. That said, we wanted to look at each of the main characters from the main series of games, and dive into their first and last lines - where they start, and what they become.

Note: There will be some spoilers for the mainline games in the Assassin's Creed series, as well as plot points of the series overall.

11 Desmond Miles

Desmond Miles from Assassin's Creed with his hoodie hood up
  • First: "Bastards!"
  • Last: "You Know It's True. It's Already Started. I Need To Do This Now. So Go! GO!"

Though we now have more games without Desmon than with him, the original modern-day protagonist of the series was iconic at the time. He began with a - quite frankly - justified bit of aggression towards the Templars/Abstergo members who were keeping him hostage in order to use him for his DNA.

Then his final words in Assassin's Creed 3 showed just how far he had come in this short time. Though he was once against being involved in any of this conflict, he would now risk everything in order to save not only his friends, but the world from certain doom.

10 Altaïr Ibn-LaʼAhad

Altair in a crowd in Assassin's Creed
  • First: "Not Fortune, Skill. Watch A While Longer And You Might Learn Something."
  • Last: "I- I Can't."

As the original protagonist from the first game, Altair is easily glossed over now when it comes to recounting the most memorable assassins. Sure, he still plays a significant part in the series, but many will forget his journey entirely, or have just never actually played his story.

His first line indicated his clear arrogance and disregard for what the Creed is, and how he never truly understood it. Soon after he is crushingly demoted and must earn everything back, uncovering the truth of the order and his mentor. In his final response to being told to destroy the piece of Eden he now possesses, he responds that he is unable to - as it will not let him.

9 Ezio Auditore Da Firenze

Assassins Creed Ezio Collection
  • First: "Insieme Per La Vittoria! (We Stand Together!)"
  • Last: "I Don't Think Firenze Is Your Problem."

Ezio is the most memorable and notable assassin from the series, and an easy pick for most when choosing a favorite. His journey spans three games, and takes him from young adulthood to old age, making the events of his life even more impactful.

In his first scene (not including his own birth), he is rallying the people around him in the streets of Firenze - arrogant and surely causing trouble to break out. By the end, however, despite traveling to so many places and achieving so much, the last we see of Ezio is back in Firenze. In the short film Embers, his last moments are spent speaking to a similarly arrogant young man, before passing away from a heart attack in the streets before his wife and child.

8 Connor Kenway (Ratonhnhaké:ton)

Screenshot Assassin's Creed 3 Connor Kenway Looking Over City
  • First: "Good Morning, Mother."
  • Last: "It Is Not Enough!"

Connor Kenway was born into a Native American tribe, though his father was the Templar known as Haytham. The first portion of the game follows Haytham's journey, but then we finally begin as Connor (or Ratonhnhaké:ton) when he is a child.

His first line is greeting his mother in the tribe, while mischievously hiding a book that he was inspecting within one of the buildings. His final line, after holding the Apple of Eden and speaking to Juno, is expressing that his achievement in saving his people is not enough, and he wishes to do more.

7 Edward Kenway

  • First: "Can You See Her?"
  • Last: "Okay, Hush Now."

Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag is both many peoples' favorite AC game, and also the first one that felt distant from the series up until that point - a refreshing spin. Though some mechanics returned and you played a familiar bloodline, taking the role of Connor Kenway's grandfather and Haytham Kenway's father, this game let you loose around the Caribbean as a pirate.

Edward Kenway, a Welsh man out looking to make a fortune, starts as a privateer in the midst of a battle on the seas. Manning the canon and soon after taking the wheel, the ship goes down. Over the course of the game, he learns to set aside his greed, become part of the Assassin's brotherhood, and look out for those around him. By the end, we see Edward attending a theatre in London with his children, holding up young Haytham so he can see the stage.

6 Shay Patrick Cormac

Assassins Creed Rogue Shay Patrick Cormac
  • First: "Stay My Blade From The Flesh Of The Innocent."
  • Last: "May The Father Of Understanding Guide Us All."

Assassin's Creed: Rogue was a strange one for the series, and many didn't even get around to playing this one. Releasing alongside Assassin's Creed: Unity simultaneously meant that most flocked to the new, next-gen title in the series. Rogue was left behind, and it was never fair to the experience.

Perhaps one of the most notable and symbolic first and final lines in the series, Shay Cormac perfectly displays the course of his journey with these quotes. Once an Assassin, Shay comes to join the Templar order, then being tasked with hunting down his old associates. His first line begins with the Creed of the Assassins, while his final line closes off with that of the Templar order.

5 Arno Victor Dorian

Assassin's Creed Unity - Arno with a French flag in the background
  • First: "Can't I Go With You, Father?"
  • Last: "All That We Do, All That We Are, Begins And Ends With Ourselves."

Amidst the height of the French Revolution, Assassin's Creed: Unity follows the young Arno Dorian as he gets mixed up in both the Assassin's brotherhood in Paris, and the revolution itself.

We first meet Arno as a child, where he wishes to accompany his father to a meeting rather than sit around a wait. This is, sadly, the last time he saw his father alive. By the end of the game, Arno has endured much loss, both personally and from the effects of the revolution, and is a much wiser person because of it; Naivete is replaced with experience.

4 Jacob & Evie Frye

Frye twins Jacob and Evie Assassins Creed Syndicate with Big Ben backdrop
  • Jacob's First: "What A Question."
  • Evie's First: "George, Honestly, I've Studied The Plans Of The Laboratory And Have Every Route Covered."
  • Jacob's Last: "Race You To The Train."
  • Evie's Last: "You're On."

In this Victorian London era, Assassin's Creed: Syndicate has you take the roles of the twins Jacob and Evie Frye. Young and eager Assassins, they set out to central London in order to dismantle the crime syndicate that holds the boroughs, and is ultimately led by those in the Templar order. Jacob has brawn, and Evie has brains; together, they'll work as a team - or separately - in order to achieve their goals.

While they do change over the course of the game, as they face serious issues, hardships, and tension in their own bond, some things never change. From start to finish, they are kids at heart, and that passion and wonder still shine through after everything. Starting with eagerness and confidence to do the job well, and ending with a classic competitive sibling scenario.

3 Bayek Of Siwa

Assassin's Creed Origins Bayek Promotional Art
  • First: "I Am Medjay To No Pharaoh"
  • Last: "I'll Take You Home."

In Bayek's journey through Egypt, he has but one initial goal - to kill those who were involved in the untimely death of his son. Eventually, he comes to found the Assassin's brotherhood, with himself, his wife Aya, and his associates becoming the first of the Hidden Ones.

At the beginning of this story, we watch as Bayek angrily confronts one of the men involved in his son's death. By the end, however, we see Bayek show a much more soft and caring side, as he offers to walk a young child he had just freed from captivity back home. Safe to say, by this point in the story, Bayek has found peace and purpose.

2 Alexios/Kassandra

Kassandra from Assassins Creed Odyssey.
  • First: "Tell Your Boss He Can Stick It -" (before being promptly punched)
  • Last: "I'd Drink To That!"

Though Kassandra is generally considered the canon protagonist of Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, you can choose between her or Alexios, her brother. Either way, they play the same role in the story, and so their journey across ancient Greece starts and ends in the same ways.

Beginning the journey, they are arrogant towards some thugs on their home island, who promptly begin a fight with you. Though wiser and having endured a lot, what better way to end off the game than by sharing a drink with friends? Kassandra/Alexios will have a choice of what to toast, but it is a heartwarming toast nonetheless.

1 Eivor Varinsdottir

assasin's creed male and female eivor
  • First: "There You Are."
  • Last: "You Are Less Mine Than I Am Yours. And I Ask Of You Only This, Keep Me Honest In The Times To Come."

Once again, you can choose to play male or female in Assassin's Creed: Valhalla, though the character of Eivor is the same regardless. A young and eager Viking in their home of Norway, Eivor soon sets sail to explore and settle England with some people of their own.

Beginning the game as a child, Eivor is searching for the armband their family has prepared as a gift at a large gathering in the great hall. By the end, however, Eivor is much older, much wiser, and leads a significant village of people in the heart of England. They close off their role by speaking to them, honest and true, showing how far they have come as a leader of the people.
