A Triumphant Return is the next main story quest in Assassin's Creed Valhalla after The Measure of a Norseman. Now that Oswald's confidence has been restored, it's time to attack Rued's clan in order to finally put an end to their pillaging in East Anglia.

This is a much longer quest than any of the other ones you have completed in East Anglia up to this point, which is why we've put together this comprehensive A Triumphant Return guide as part of our complete Assassin's Creed Valhalla walkthrough. Here's where to find Rued's scouts in Northwic, as well as details on how to find and defeat Rued himself in Dunwic.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla A Triumphant Return Guide

This guide picks up directly where our The Measure of a Norseman guide left off. After collecting the Magister's Cloak in the chest near where Finnr found his treasure, fast travel back to the docks at Northwic in order to regroup with Oswald, who will be highlighted by a quest marker. When you arrive, he'll be speaking with Broder and Valdis, but Brothir will intervene in order to bring your attention to a dead scout. It appears that Rued's men are sniffing around town in search of an entry route for an attack. You'll get a new quest objective to locate where the scout came from in order to ensure that he didn't bring friends with him. Spoiler: he did.

You will now be tasked with locating another scout so that you can take them in for questioning and prepare for what seems like an inevitable attack. There is no quest marker for this objective, but the remaining scout is located in the eastern part of Northwic, at the place marked by Eivor's location (the green arrow) in the screenshot below.

If you approach this area from the battlements just south of it, you can easily stealth attack the scout from above and take him out in a single hit. Once he's down, you need to tie him up and carry him back to Oswald, who can be found at the quest marker approximately 250 metres away from your current location. A cutscene will play once you arrive, during which you need to decide what to do with the scout. The scout will die regardless of which choice you pick, so it doesn't really matter all that much.

After the cutscene finishes, you will have to sail to Dunwic in order to take on Rued. Board your longship and sail east towards the quest marker — selecting the auto-sail option will ensure that you automatically take the fastest route there. When you arrive at your destination, climb up the cliffs and head to the quest marker, where a cutscene will play.

After the cutscene ends, it will be time to officially infiltrate Dunwic. If you want to go in with stealth, go along the right side of the bridge — on the outside of it, as opposed to on the bridge itself — jumping from pole to pole until you reach a tightrope. This allows you access a small entrance where you can go inside and move a large wooden object to reveal a gap. Go into this room and turn the corner to the right, where you can crouch through another small gap in the bottom of the wall. Push through to the end of the hall and through the canvassing to reveal a ladder on your left. You have now made your way into the camp undetected, but there are still soldiers everywhere, so be careful. Climb up another ladder directly in front of where you emerged and you will see the brazier you need to light on your left. Hold your torch and walk over to it to automatically light it.

Facing the brazier, turn left and go into the room beside you — climb the ladder inside and assassinate the guard at the top. This is a perfect perch to take down plenty of enemies with silent headshots, clearing a path before you call the official raid. Use Odin’s sight to locate all nearby enemies, who will glow red, and headshot them one by one. Once you've cleared as many as you can see, blow your warhorn to start the raid, which will now be significantly easier due to you stealthily evening the odds. Your objective is to eliminate the rest of Rued’s men — once you clear everyone out, a cutscene will play and Rued will approach you.

Rued and Oswald engage in a holmgang, a fight to the death. Rued looks like he is going to win and holds Oswald over the edge, but Oswald stabs him and they fall off the side of the town’s battlements together. Now you must escape with your allies by heading towards the spot where you originally gathered just outside the city walls, which will be highlighted by a quest marker. Once you arrive with Valdis, Broder, Brothir, and Finnr, a cutscene will start (all members of the party need to be present for it to trigger). At the end of the cutscene, fast travel back to Northwic to begin the next quest: Raising Iron.
